Her motions are thoughtful. Considered. And her answers, while articulate and seemingly given easily, are thoughtful and considered, as well. She is not a surprise to me. Like her work, Govier is quietly vivacious, witty but not hilarious and perfectly turned out in an entirely casual way. While these things might amount to unpleasant contradictions in another, Govier makes it all work very well. In her work and in her mien, Govier is a writer without compare. Comparisons are made anyway. In articles about Govier, Margaret Atwood's name comes up a lot, though the comparisons seem unjust. Both women are Canadians and both have decided to strike where no genre exists to tell stories that are close to their hearts. Also, both women's work occasionally slides into the historical but their styles personally and in writing are very different. In 1989, in a

Ward Chipman Library Building The Alberta-born, Toronto-based author Katherine Govier has published seven novels, three collections of short stories, and two travel books. Her seventh novel, Creation , explores the life and aesthetic of a visual artist, as did her novel Angel Walk The Immaculate Conception Photography Gallery Hearts of Flame (1991), Govier is also the recipient of the Marian Engel Award (1997), which recognizes the accomplishments of an author at mid-career. This past summer filming of her short story "The Piano Tuner" got underway. In 1833 John James Audubon, the illustrious bird artist, sets out to find the undiscovered avian species of Labrador. He hires a schooner and, with his son and his assistants, explores the coast of Newfoundland and enters the labyrinthine Strait of Belle Isle. In the murky hold of The Ripley "Angel Walk is assured, original and completely convincing. Her portrait of Cory Ditchburn is a major contribution to the gallery of strong female characters created by Margaret Laurence, Margaret Atwood and others."

EXCERPT
Henry Bayfield stands on the foredeck of the Gulnare. He gazes straight ahead, but from long practice he can sense her elongated oval behind him. She is his world, a surveying ship made to his specifications and chartered by the Royal Navy. He takes pleasure in her lines, her slender masts on which the flag now snaps in a fresh wind, and her gleaming black hull. Before him is the figurehead, the head and torso of a woman, gleaming too, in white with touches of blue and pink. He stands with feet apart, hands loosely gripped behind him, in full uniform, his cap on, prepared for any eventuality, even one as unexpected as this: that in this far-flung, rugged anchorage he should encounter an American painter of birds.
The whaleboat approaches, rowed by Yankee sailors, the same sailors who delivered a calling card only an hour previously. He has it now in his breast pocket. It is a most unusual card, bearing the stamp of a Wild Turkey and the motto “America my country.” It has the name Audubon on it; the sailors will deliver the man himself, who stands in the bow in a rough wool jacket and fisherman’s trousers baggy with damp, his head covered with a sou’wester, out of which streams a tangled mane of chestnut hair.

I almost never write non-fiction anymore, maybe because the more that I publish, the happier I am to stay behind the mask of fiction. It was luck, however, when Carol Shields and Marjorie Anderson wrote to me asking for a piece on secrets, that I had just finished the short story "Wild Roses". I have published six novels and three short story collections: The Truth Teller Angel Walk Random Descent and The Immaculate Conception Photography Gallery are all available in Vintage Canada paperback. I have also edited Without a Guide , an anthology of women’s travel stories, which has been published in the United States, the United Kingdom, Holland and Canada. In 1997 I won Canada’s Marian Engel Award for a Woman Writer in Mid-Career; in 1992 I won the City of Toronto Book Award for Hearts of Flame . In 1998 I was named Distinguished Alumni by the University of Alberta. I was born in Edmonton and live in Toronto. I have taught English and Creative Writing at Ryerson Polytechnical University and York University. My radio dramas have been broadcast on CBC Radio and my many reviews and features have appeared in Time magazine

ANGEL WALK
Katherine Govier
(Little, Brown)
Katherine Govier is the kind of writer who, when you hear she has a new book coming out, makes you snap to attention. It's different from Margaret Atwood, who's going to alarm you, or Barbara Gowdy, who's going to suggest new kinds of household accidents that could kill your baby, it's more that Govier will have secrets to reveal, things no one's thought to tell you yet. And she has her own vivid way of putting things, so that you can be having a perfectly innocuous tea with your family and think suddenly, "God, Govier's right. My great-aunt's lips do look like earthworms!"

A book is often hard to get into when the reader is not a huge fan of the main character. By reader I mean me and by main character I mean Cory Ditchburn of Angel Walk Cory Ditchburn, a mid-eighties retired photographer, is being forced to put together a retrospective of her life with the help of her son. She reminisces back to her early start in Britain where she falls in love with a much older artist, to Pointe au Baril, Ontario where she unwillingly makes an attempt at single motherhood, and back again to Europe , throwing herself and her camera into the middle of a war and annoying everyone she comes in contact with in the process.
