Hellenes of Troy-ronto
Katherine Govier sees the collapse of old-school illusions in the groves of blue-blood academe
By KERRI SAKAMOTO
Monday, May. 15, 2000
Now was that life, or was it a dream?" That sentiment, attributed to Helen of Troy, is echoed by characters in The Truth Teller (Random House Canada; $34.95), Katherine Govier's grand and comic, richly patterned novel. The phrase aptly conveys the sense of regret and wonderment at life's odyssey that resides at the heart of this book. The Truth Teller opens onto the 50th anniversary commencement proceedings of the Manor School for Classical Studies, "an extraordinary Toronto institution," according to Amelia Holt, its beleaguered administrator, "a world class school for the gifted, the talented, the unruly and the truly off the wall." The headmaster and headmistress are octogenarian Dugald Laird and his younger wife, coldly exquisite Francesca Morrow. Dugald launches into full rhetorical flight, recounting the school's watery mythic origins: "As you see, the sacred spring is no mere image. It runs here beneath the grass we stand on. It drew my wife and I together to its banks, and it has kept us here." Dugald and Francesca's eccentric pedagogy integrates Greek myth with Eastern martial arts to make dreamy scholars out of wayward underachievers from blue-blood North Toronto families. It is this pedagogy that informs and patterns the novel with meaning, metaphor and humor, as characters embrace or resist it. The eponymous truth teller is Cassie, a new arrival at the school. She is a whirling dervish of a girl, ungainly but sensitive and giftedor burdenedwith insights of the mythic Cassandra, who fears calamities. In a ceremony of naming presided over by Francesca during a lesson on The Trojan Women, Cassie is transformed into a prophet. She envisions famines, droughts and the downfall of the Manor School. Her utterances soon unsettle 50 years of apparent serenity. The murmurings of the "sacred spring" begin to turn turbulent.

Shy, angelic looking Job Sunstrum is barely tolerated in the rough and tumble farming community of Godsfinger, Alberta. At the urging of his pastor brother, Job is persuaded by a visiting evanglist to become a foot soldier for the Lord. But, his total immersion in religious life leads him to wonder what his chances are for love of a more 'earthy' nature. A funny and beautiful novel.

Lines from the Library (October 2002)
By Frankie Shaw
It occurred to me the other day that this little spot is much more than a public lending library. It is a meeting place, a place of connections. Here, we not only connect people to the pleasure of books, but we also connect people to information; we connect children to far away lands and experiences beyond their imagination; we connect family to family; we connect friends to friends and we connect neighbour to neighbour.
We have many enthusiastic users of our new on-line library service, and the traffic in items passing through this library has increased considerably, now that library users in Wellington County have discovered the joys of browsing and surfing and requesting their selections to be sent for them to pick up at the most convenient library.
Janet and I are still concentrating hard, with noses turned to the computer screen, with the result that we are getting many ribald comments from our regular ( and familiar) friends. New books to take note of this month.
