A tour de force of the imagination, THE WHITE BONE is a thrilling journey into the minds of African elephants as they struggle to survive in a land wracked by drought and slaughter. The story is told by a young cow named Mud, who at the novel's opening has survived an attack on her family by ivory poachers. She finds herself at the center of a desperate quest for the White Bone: an object of mythic power that if found might lead the herd to safety and survival.
Review
Barbara Gowdy has an utter affinity for the unconventional. In the title story of We So Seldom Look on Love , necrophilia is exquisite rather than execrable, and her wildly funnyand wildly affectingnovel Mister Sandman invites us into the hearts and minds of Toronto's least normal and most loving family. With The White Bone Gowdy continues her exploration of extraordinary lives, but this time human beings (hindleggers) are on the periphery. And we're grateful when they're not around, since this gives her four-legged characterselephantsa chance to survive.

Mister Sandman: A Novel (Harvest Book)
Barbara Gowdy

© AllScout GmbH Review
This riotous account of the family unit was a smash hit in Europe, Canada, and England. In the Times Literary Supplement , author Margaret Atwood ( The Handmaid's Tale ) praised Barbara Gowdy's novel as surprising and delightful, containing moments at the same time preposterous and strangely moving. The Canary family guards many secrets, including the mystery of tiny daughter, Joan, who was dropped on her head at birth and has never spoken. Joan plays the piano like Mozart, yet has never had a lesson. The outrageous hilarity rises into a climax that creates a stunning new definition of family togetherness.
From the Back Cover
One of the most audacious and talked-about novels of the season, Mister Sandman is set in Toronto in the mid-1950s and concerns the Canary family: their immoderate passions and eccentricities and their secret lives . Mister Sandman: A Novel Harvest Book

(HarperCollins Canada, 1998;
Barbara Gowdy creates an intense and complex culture for African elephants, replete with ritual and mythology, in The White Bone Mud is an adoptive member of the She-S's family, a matriarchal group of "she-ones," the universal term in her language for all elephants. All adult cows are given a name such as "She-Scares" or "She-Soothes" while bulls retain their birth name and leave the herd upon maturity. Mud is a visionary, capable of seeing events occurring either in the future or in the present but at a distance. Her best friend is Date Bed, a near-sighted cow calf who is a "mind talker." Date Bed can communicate with all other species except for snakes, insects and "hindleggers" the elephants' term for human beings. Up until now, life has been pleasant relatively uncomplicated as she and her family roam the Domain (a portion of Africa), but things are changing. Drought makes food and water scarce, and ivory hunters are slaughtering the pachyderm families. The only hope for the she-ones, it would seem, is contingent upon a magical white bone which is supposed to point the way to a Safe Place. After Mud's family is attacked, she and the survivors begin the search for the bone, and for Date Bed, who has been separated from the family. Gowdy has woven a remarkable story around these creatures. She doesn't sugarcoat her story; rather, she is uncompromising in describing the sickening brutality of the hindleggers. Her careful research is evident in her development of mythology, rituals and traditions for the she-ones, not to mention language. A glossary is provided before the narrative begins and is essential reading for better comprehension; it is there, for example, that one learns that to have "trunk" is to have deep spiritual understanding. Furthermore, she gives them a sense of story, possibly one of the greatest of all attributes.

Barbara Gowdy's quirky novel Mister Sandman features a cluster of original and off-kilter characters who are intriguing if not entirely lovable. Set in Toronto mainly in the '60s and early '70s, it is a tale of magic realism set on its ear. Joan Canary is an enigma. A freakish accident at her birth supposedly left her brain-damaged, and certainly that diagnosis seems to be borne out by her stunted growth, her silence except for the sounds that she mimics, and her penchant for hiding in her bedroom closet. But there is more to Joan than meets the eye, and while no one in her family can say why, they sense this as well. Joan's birth mother is a single teenager, Sonja, and it is the machinations through which Sonja's mother, Doris, takes the family to have the baby born out of town which leads to Joan's condition. She is raised by Doris and her husband, Gordon, as their daughter and as a sister to Sonja and their other daughter Marcy, six years older than Joan. To everyone's surprise, Joan suddenly starts playing the piano by ear at the age of 6, and her ability adds to the puzzle. In a way, though, her music is what sets her on the path to giving her family what they need: a cohesive sense of family.

  • When Date Bed is separated from her family, she discovers that the Domain has been warped by the violence of man. Because these are “abnormal times,” she’s not quite certain of animals’ behaviors anymore. It’s clear that the arrival of man has not only altered the elephants’ world, but the animal kingdom at large. In what ways are each of the character’s perspectives altered, both through direct circumstance and spiritually?
  • In what ways do the elephants’ religion parallel and differ from the varieties of human worship?

    BIO
    Barbara Gowdy's work, THE WHITE BONE, is being praised for its "audacious concept, inspired characterization and poignant message." It is the story of Mud, a young African elephant cow, whose courage and visionary powers guide her and her kin to a safe place away from the ivory poachers. Gowdy witnessed the real-life quest for survival on which this story is based, traveling to Kenya to study elephant behavior. Once again Gowdy draws readers into a strange fictional world, animating it with her convincing narrative and poetic vision of life. Her previous book, MISTER SANDMAN, was Margaret Atwood's Book of the Year choice for the Times Literary Supplement, and it was also a Village Voice choice for Favorite Book of the Year. The film Kissed was inspired by a short story from her collection WE SO SELDOM LOOK ON LOVE. INTERVIEW June 23, 2000

    The White Bone
    This book was recommended to me by Fred Patten. At first I was a little surprised to find it in the general fiction section of my book store. This is the story of Mud, and her family. They are elephants living in an every shrinking habitat. Humans are their primary creditors. They, their rifles and their fences are changing the elephant's world at a pace too fast for these massive beasts to understand. The book is written primarily from Mud's point of view, sharing her throughout and visions throughout the tail. The reviews call it a story of a quest, whereas I would call it the story of survival. It takes a few pages to get use to the characters' names and their way of talking. Then the book gets interesting. Elephants don't forget. They share a sort of racial memory that dims before they were born and seems almost to stretch until after they die. A few dreamers can see the future, but it is only in very troubling glances. Mud is one such dreamer. They can live in the past and the present simultaneously. This, the book explains, is often what they are doing when they appear to physically be doing nothing. The book covers several mating periods, mostly in flashbacks. It even spends some time being told from Tall Time's (the Link Bull) and Date Bed's point of view. It shows how other creatures in the environment are seen by the Elephants; some are as intelligent, others are not. This variation in species and abilities is a rare trait for a furry book.
