MISTER SANDMAN
by Barbara Gowdy
Somerville House Publishing, Toronto, 268 pages, $24.95
Reviewed by Brett Josef Grubisic
Evoking the calm of a summer idyll in a distant past, the cover illustration of Mister Sandman , the new novel by Barbara Gowdy, could be accused of misdirection. It depicts in muted tones a girl sitting on what might be the front steps of her house, gazing at a lush Pissarroesque landscape. Anyone familiar with Gowdy's story "Disneyland" and its terrifying, dystopian re-vision of the myth of the 1950s nuclear family, or who has read the crazed family history that comprises much of Falling Angels , will instantly wonder what's going on. Gowdy's forte is not, after all, pastel hues and Hallmark greeting-card sentiments. Perhaps a more appropriate cover would have been a garishly coloured photograph of a malformed young girl reading in a darkened closet. That, at least, would reflect Mister Sandman's Êgeneral timbre. Yes, here Gowdy continues to delve into the murk of the suburban North American heart. In this book Gowdy revisits a familiar time and place and, once again, produces a counter-history of sorts that erodes the predominant notion of the late 1950s and early 1960s made popular through television and cinema. Gowdy's subversion, in effect, grows mould on the usual Wonder Bread depictions of that era. She denies the comfort offered to many by

The White Bone was a national bestseller in Canada and Germany, and appeared on the top-ten-of-the-year and editor’s choice lists in numerous newspapers and magazines. “To call this astonishing novel a tour de force, as critics have done, is to suggest the author’s virtuosity, but not her power to terrify and console,” wrote Joyce Carol Oates in The Times Literary Supplement . Gowdy has been twice a finalist for both of Canada’s most prestigious literary honours, the Governor General’s Award and The Giller Prize. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Gowdy now lives in Toronto. She has previously worked as a book editor, teacher and critic. Her forthcoming novel is called

All too often, it's to talk about people. When animals are written to provide character witnesses for humans, the prosecution or the defense whichever it is tends to run wild. The animal witnesses produce such damning testimony or such glowing testimony that the judge and jury begin to raise their eyebrows. And whether or not the case is won, the cause of literature may be lost. Because animals are voiceless, we are free to put words into their mouths. Because they are innocent of human sins, we like to have them lined up on our side. I'll get back to the dangerous subject of innocence, after arguing that the best animal stories are written by those who find animals interesting for their own sakes.
