Evening Prayer Someone has cut the grass. Someone has cut your tall
new grass, the sweetness
smears a wild raw dress onto the air, and she
is rising, turning now,
in sun, in wind, and she is free... Walking home
I saw the shadow of a bird, like a heart, like a scythe.
I saw the shadow-wings cross through a wall. The vacant-lot weeds, too, swayed there. And thistles,
pods. Terrible
silky wall, abandoned warehouse, thigh...
And the elms, burnt now, were young
all over it, and the wind into its fatigue... But the bird, fistful of time and sinew, blue, dragged down over the cinderblock by light, lawed down and brushstroked downhow he went through, went abstract, clean. Not hungry there and not afraid. Thou shalt

Jorie Graham Jorie Graham, recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a Pulitzer Prize, is one of the best known contemporary American poets. Helen Vendler has written that "Graham's fierce sense of the philosophic universal may help remind American poets that there is a dimension of the lyric that goes beyond the merely personal . . . . It is the dimension we find in Emily Brontë and Emily Dickinsonaustere, renunciatory, far-seeing, but also detailed, intimate, saturated with phenomena." Graham's books include Dream of the Unified Field Materialism , and Region of Unlikeness, ; and she has edited an anthology, Earth Took of Earth . She teaches at the Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa.

In the ethic in wonder, where the other and the object of the poetic subject will change, shift, the dynamic of desire, the poetic tension, between the subject and the other will change; syntax, poetic structure, and the subject in discourse will have to respond to this. In an ethic in wonder one does not determine the object, one engages with it but is at all times accountable/responsible to the Otherresponsible for its relation to the world. It is this problematic in postmodern poetics that affords me (and us?) the possibility of new intrasubjective, poetic, political, sexual and cultural relations and systemsrequires an ethical imagination. Poststructural psychoanalysis and postmodern thought have come to understand discourse as symptomatic of subjectivity, thus it is in discursive practices one can determine the workings of desire and imagination which any given subject performs in relations to its objects and others. As Antony Easthope has shown in Poetry as Discourse , discursive acts have two moments, the which is the act of uttering/writing, and the

By Robert Hass September 28, 1997
I 'VE BEGUN to read in the new books of poems that appear in the fall like an apple harvest. The most talked-about of them is Jorie Graham's The Errancy (Ecco Press). Graham received the Pulitzer Prize for her selected poems, The Dream of the Unified Field (also Ecco), last year, and this book, her first new collection in some time, is one of her best. It arrives just after a relentlessly urbane New Yorker profile of her, which, as New Yorker profiles tend to, gave us a portrait of the poet and her endearing quirks and has almost nothing to say about the urgency and vision of the poems. P eople always say about Graham that her poems are big and ambitious, that she's a gorgeous writer, and she's notoriously "difficult," as a lot of original poets are. Her difficulty usually has to do with her magic, and part of her magic comes from the fact that her poems are not always easy to locate. For example, the last poem in her new book describes a man in robes dancing down an alley at sundown. Who or what is he? The poem doesn't tell us. He could be a man dancing down an alley, a Chaplinesque or harlequinesque figure perhaps, seen or imagined. Or he could be a metaphor for the dancing of the wind. Or for poetry. Or for a certain freedom that only the human soul sometimes has. There is even a moment when you think it may be a figure conjured while listening to music. G raham is also notoriously intelligent, and the intelligence of the poems often consists in leaps of imagination, or leaps of inference. And, in the way of intelligence, these leaps can feel like sudden, surprising turns. They're not what you expected and they need to be read and read again. For example, the last eight lines of this same poem.
