The Vancouver Post Office This story is from the Greater Vancouver Book by Chuck Davis. You can find more stories from the book here
by Andrew Scott
Vancouver's first post office was not located in Gastown nor anywhere near today's urban centre but in the kitchen of a remote pioneer hotel at the end of the city's first wagon road. Early postal patrons had to hike, ride or row to this spotnow occupied by New Brighton Park next to the looming Alberta Wheat Pool elevators. New Westminster residentswho had enjoyed postal service since 1859could bounce out by daily stagecoach to two simple hostelries in order to refresh themselves in the ocean and at the bar or take a primitive ferry to Burrard Inlet's nearby lumber mills. The office on the inlet, which opened July 2, 1869, was the only postal outlet in colonial times within Vancouver's current boundaries. Postmaster Maximilian Michaud, who bought the Brighton Hotel early in 1869 and changed its name to the Hastings, used a grid-lined hammer enclosing the number "28" to cancel the mail. (Only a few envelopes with the "28" postmark are known; an example offered at auction in 1988 sold for over $3,000.) After B.C. joined Confederation in 1871 the post office's unofficial name, Burrard Inlet, was made official. It was renamed Hastings in 1897. By 1874 the communities surrounding the inlet's two busy mills had grown large enough to require their own postal establishments. An office called Moodyville (the name was changed to North Vancouver in 1902) began service at Sewell Moody's pioneer mill on the north shore of Burrard Inlet on March 1, 1874. One month later the Granville post office opened in the store at Captain Edward Stamp's Hastings Mill located at the top of Dunlevy St. near Gastown. (The 1865 store is the city's oldest building; it was moved in 1930 to a park at the north foot of Alma St.) Henry Harvey, the mill's storekeeper, was the first postmaster. Granville, named after Earl Granville (George Leveson-Gower), Britain's secretary of state for the colonies, is considered the forerunner of the present-day Vancouver post office by most people.

George Silverman's Explanation
by Charles Dickens
previous: EIGHTH CHAPTER
NINTH CHAPTER
SAID I, one night, when I had conquered myself, 'Mr. Granville,' Mr. Granville Wharton his name was, - 'I doubt if you have ever yet so much as seen Miss Fareway.'
'Well, sir,' returned he, laughing, 'you see her so much yourself, that you hardly leave another fellow a chance of seeing her.'
'I am her tutor, you know,' said I.
And there the subject dropped for that time. But I so contrived as that they should come together shortly afterwards. I had previously so contrived as to keep them asunder; for while I loved her, - I mean before I had determined on my sacrifice, - a lurking jealousy of Mr. Granville lay within my unworthy breast.
It was quite an ordinary interview in the Fareway Park but they talked easily together for some time: like takes to like, and they had many points of resemblance. Said Mr. Granville to me, when he and I sat at our supper that night, 'Miss Fareway is remarkably beautiful, sir, remarkably engaging. Don't you think so?' 'I think so,' said I. And I stole a glance at him, and saw that he had reddened and was thoughtful. I remember it most vividly, because the mixed feeling of grave pleasure and acute pain that the slight circumstance caused me was the first of a long, long series of such mixed impressions under which my hair turned slowly gray.
I had not much need to feign to be subdued; but I counterfeited to be older than I was in all respects (Heaven knows! my heart being all too young the while), and feigned to be more of a recluse and bookworm than I had really become, and gradually set up more and more of a fatherly manner towards Adelina. Likewise I made my tuition less imaginative than before; separated myself from my poets and philosophers; was careful to present them in their own light, and me, their lowly servant, in my own shade. Moreover, in the matter of apparel I was equally mindful; not that I had ever been dapper that way; but that I was slovenly now.

Denison Gallery Opens 2003 With Show by Bogdanovitch
GRANVILLE Long-time Denison University faculty member George Bogdanovitch will have the first show of 2003 at the University's Art Gallery in Burke Hall, showing a new series of paintings "Pushing It." A reception for the artist is set for 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 17) and is free and open to the public. Music will be provided by the Tom Carroll Quintet. The show will run through Sunday, Feb. 16 with the gallery (240 West Broadway) open daily from 1 to 4 p.m. George Bogdanovitch "Pushing It" has been two years in the making and Bogdanovitch says he has returned to the "abstract expressionist" movement, drawing some of his inspiration from artists such as Jackson Pollock, DeKooning, Rothko, Kline and Motherwell. He has used large canvases and employed paint in a spontaneous and expressive manner with the use of large brushes. "Historically, the process lent a degree of energy and force to paintings," says Gallery Director Lee Hanford. "In fact, the rapid, intuitive method was considered as important as the painting itself. In producing these large canvases, Bogdanovitch, like those involved with abstract expressionism before him, has applied paint in an unconventional way so that the medium can become one of the key viewer considerations."
