He established his reputation with Good-bye to All That (1929), an outspoken book on his war experiences. A versatile and highly prolific writer, Graves considered himself primarily a poet; his poems were characterized by gracefulness and lucidity. However, Graves was best known for his unorthodox novels of Roman history, I, Claudius (1934) and Claudius the God (1934), as well as fictionalized reappraisals of history and legend such as King Jesus (1946) and Homer's Daughter (1955). Graves was also known for studies of the mythological and psychological sources of poetry, such as The White Goddess Greek Myths (2 vol., 1955), and

Study of the White Goddess (as described in the work of robert graves). Includes a variety of other areas of Goddess worship.
http://www.thewhitegoddess.com
Welcome to my web site which is dedicated to the study of the White Goddess as described in the seminal work of Robert Graves . The White Goddess is the Goddess of the Old Religion that was suppressed by the Christians. She is manifest in her natural epiphanies and in the turning of the Wheel of the Year. The White Goddess has many names in different lands and different cults associated with her worship. She is the Earth and we ignore her at our peril. She is the creator of the universe, She is transcendent and omnipotent but can be known through her creation. She represents perfect harmony, wisdom and peace. Praise be to the Goddess. IMBOLIC The Urban Goddess The Goddess manifests herself in her sacred plant epiphanies even in the midst of our modern cities. These epiphanies speak to us of ancient wisdom that we either never knew or have forgotten through the mists of time. Those who have persecuted pagans over the last two thousand years have deliberately suppressed the message of some epiphanies. As Christianity made itself the dominant religion in Britain it viciously suppressed the Old Religion and murdered its practitioners. The Old Religion did not die out but went underground, its adherents meeting furtively at night for fear of being tortured and killed. Because of the great secrecy and the atmosphere of fear it was difficult to educate initiates into the old ways. In time some of the ancient teachings and wisdom were lost but traces of their message can still be witnessed in surviving folklore. We must try to recapture the essentials of our pagan civilisation as the message of the plants is tied up with our rustic heritage and can only be fully understood through knowledge of the Old Religion.

Robert James Graves
Irish physician, born March 27, 1797, Dublin; died March 20, 1853, Dublin.
Associated eponyms:
Basedow's syndrome or disease

A disorder characterized by a triad of hyperthyroidism, goiter, and exophthalmos (bulging eyeballs). Biography: Robert James Graves was one of the leaders of the Irish, or Dublin school of diagnosis, which emphasised clinical observation of patients. He was the son of a clergyman. He received his degree from the University of Dublin in 1818 after a brilliant undergraduate career. After studying in London, Berlin, Göttingen, Hamburg and Copenhagen, he returned to Dublin in 1821 and set up a medical practice, becoming chief physician at Meath Hospital. He was also physician at the County of Dublin Infirmary and the Hospital for incurables. At Meath in Dublin Graves also taught clinical medicine, introducing reforms of medical training that he had witnessed on his travels. This included, among other things, bedside teaching, a major novelty in a country where medical teaching had been ex cathedra only. Graves assigned to advanced students the responsibility for diagnosis and treatment of ward patients, under the supervision of the faculty. One of his students was William Stokes (1804-1878), who soon became his collaborator. Another student of his was Richard Townsend, who obtained his doctorate at Edinburgh in 1824. Graves showed the qualities that would ensure a great teacher. He was tall, somewhat swarthy with a vivacious manner, and like other avant-garde professors of his time, he gave his lectures in English rather than in Latin, or Dog Latin as was still the case in most classes in the 1830's. In his introductory lecture he said: "From the very commencement the student should set out to witness the progress and effects of sickness and ought to persevere in the daily observation of disease during the whole period of his studies".
