The Listener 28 May 1970 Where the crakeberries grow - Robert Graves gives an account of himself to Leslie Norris Robert Graves in Majorca Robert Graves, in one of your poems you describe your own face: Cheeks, furrowed; coarse grey hair, flying
frentic;
Forehead, wrinkled and high;
Jowls, prominent; ears, large; jaw,pugilistic;
Teeth, few'; lips, full and ruddy, mouth,ascetic You ask the person you see reflected in your shaving mirror why He still stands ready, with a boy's
presumption,
To court the queen in her high silk pavilion. Who is the queen in her high silk pavilion? She's the woman to whom I'm writing the poem, and whatever her name may be is unimportant. Herrick used to address his poems to Julia - so we'll call her Julia, if you like. I used the name back in the early Sixties. You can't write poems unless you're in love with someone, but you don't mention the name, because it's bad manners. There are very often poems of good-bye which are very painful. They are a goodbye to love, while love is still very much in your mind-horrible.

    Graves, Robert Ranke 1895-1985, English poet, novelist, and critic; son of Alfred Percival Graves. He established his reputation with Good-bye to All That (1929), an outspoken book on his war experiences. A versatile and highly prolific writer, Graves considered himself primarily a poet; his poems were characterized by gracefulness and lucidity. However, Graves was best known for his unorthodox novels of Roman history, I, Claudius (1934) and Claudius the God (1934), as well as fictionalized reappraisals of history and legend such as King Jesus (1946) and Homer's Daughter (1955). Graves was also known for studies of the mythological and psychological sources of poetry, such as The White Goddess Greek Myths (2 vol., 1955), and Hebrew Myths (1963). Other works of criticism include The Common Asphodel Poetic Craft and Principle On Poetry: Collected Talks and Essays (1969), and translations of

    Captain Robert R. Graves
    Captain Robert R. Graves, retired from active service on the Great Lakes, is a native of the State of Ohio, born at Madison, Lake county, January 29, 1838. His parents, Eli and Nancy (Crane) Graves, were natives of Massachusetts; the father emigrated to Fredonia, New York, and thence to Ohio, where he was extensively engaged in agricultural pursuits; his grandfather was at the "Boston Tea Party," and assisted in unloading the cargo. Nancy A. Crane was the daughter of the Rev. Mr. Crane, a Presbyterian clergyman of note, who was a native of Connecticut. Captain Graves lived on the farm until sixteen years of age, when he went on the lakes as a common sailor. He was promoted from one position to another until he reached that of captain, which he filled for thirty years. He was on the lakes in all thirty-nine years and had a wide and varied experience; he has had an interest in many a worthy craft, and has accumulated a competence for his declining years. Captain Graves was united in marriage, in 1860, to Marietta A. Wright, of Harpersfield, a daughter of Jonathan and Lucretia (Woolsey) Wright, most worthy and respected pioneers of Ashtabula county. The father of Jonathan Wright came to Ashtabula county in 1804, and located at Harpersfield. Captain and Mrs. Graves have one daughter, Altha L., born in September, 1863. In politics he affiliates with the Republican party; he is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and has reached the degree of Knight Templar.
