A MILD SEPTEMBER morning. A man no longer young strolls thoughtfully on a narrow footpath along a former railway line. Noises tell of a nearby motorway but brambles, elders and hawthorns on each side hide all but the straight empty path ahead until he sees a small clearing on his right. Two girls sit here at the foot of an old telegraph pole. He pauses, gazing up at the top of the pole, examining its cracked grey timber, cross-pieces with insulators like small white jam pots from which dangle broken wires. He has noticed the girls are in their teens, look surly and depressed, wear clumsy thick-soled boots and baggy military trousers from which rise pleasantly slim bodies. One says crossly, 'What are you staring at?'
'At the wires of that sad sad pole!' says the man without lowering his eyes, 'A few years ago they carried messages from this land of ours to a world-wide commercial empire.'

http://csfg.cumulo-nimbus.com/rgrayFL.html
Gray, Alasdair - Five Letters
*Five Letters* is a series of letters from a poet to his parents, who has just become the official Emperor's poet in the new Imperial Palace of an imaginary nation. *Five Letters* is billed as "Describing etiquette, government, irrigation, education, clogs, kites, rumour, poetry, justice, massage, town-planning, sex and ventriloquism in an obsolete nation." *Five Letters* is in fact a fantasy novella (54 pages, 17,000words approx), in the form of the five letters. Alasdair Gray has written a gothic fantasy and social satire, rather than a sword-and-sorcery fantasy - the same contrast as between Mervyn Peake's *Gormenghast* and Tolkien's *Lord of the Rings*. Gray takes a twist at every cliche representation of fantasy kingdoms, creating an incredibly rich portrait of an empire, its ruthless (and bizarre) emperor and the baroque social structures that support the emperor's power. Gray's attention to minute descriptive detail, and the imaginative energy that has gone into the creation of this imaginary version of feudal China, makes *Five Letters* fascinating reading even if you only want to mine the work for ideas. The work is difficult to describe, and a plot synopsis would make little or no sense, but fortunately published in Penguin 60s which are only about $1 or $2. I have a copy that I'm happy to lend out.

Drafts and papers of Lanark: A life in four books
by Alasdair Gray
Sp Coll MS Gen 1595 This month's feature from the Special Collections Department is the drafts and papers relating to Alasdair Gray's most famous novel, Lanark: A life in four books . This book was published in 1981 by Cannongate Publishing, having taken almost 30 years to be completed. Alasdair Gray was born in the Riddrie, Glasgow, in 1934. From an early age he showed a flair and interest in both writing and art, at the age of eleven winning a BBC competition and reading some of his verses on Scottish radio children's hour. In 1948, Gray was the editor of the school magazine at Whitehill primary school in Glasgow, to which he also contributed pictures and stories. In 1952 Gray began his degree at Glasgow School of Art, where he was a student until 1957. After this, he made a living in numerous ways - teaching, painting, being an "artist recorder" at the People's Palace museum in Glasgow, and also undertaking a post at the University of Glasgow as a writer in residence. Thirty years later Gray has returned to the University and is presently one third of the chair of creative writing, alongside James Kelman and Tom Leonard. During this time Gray wrote numerous works, such as

Alasdair Gray: Critical Appreciations and a Bibliography
Edited by Phil Moores, introduced by Will Self
Alasdair Gray has led the renaissance of Scottish literary life of the last twenty years. His epic, Lanark , has influenced a generation of writers. Poor Things won the Whitbread, and the Guardian Fiction Prize. Gray is a also a major artist, poet, playwright and scholar. This new bibliography fills a gap in the study and enjoyment of the work of a writer and artist of international importance. It includes Gray's own analysis of his writing life and is copiously illustrated with his work. Fans of Alasdair Gray and anyone interested in modern Scottish writing and the development of British fiction will be fascinated by this compilation. Alasdair Gray

The jacket is designed by Alasdair Gray and is, although I say so myself, pretty gorgeous. Alasdair Gray is a writer, painter, poet, playwright, book designer, anthologist, polemicist and all-round good egg. Although he had been writing since his teens (his first story was published when he was 15), Gray spent time teaching, designing play-scenery and painting, it wasn't until 1981 that he shot onto the literary scene, at the age of 45, with the novel Lanark . He had been writing the book, on and off, for about 25 years, but to the English (actually, make that London) literary world it appeared as though he had come from nowhere. Anthony Burgess included it in his list of best novels written in English since 1945 and called Gray the greatest Scottish literary talent since Walter Scott, even daring to make comparisons between Lanark and Joyce's Ulysses . The book paved the way for London to accept the new-wave of Scottish fiction: James Kelman, Irvine Welsh, Iain Banks, Janice Galloway, A.L. Kennedy all owe a debt.

read by Jessa Crispin The night I began reading Lanark I ran into the living room and declared to Kenan, "This is the best book I have ever read!" He looked unconvinced. "What page are you on?" "Ten." "Ten." "Yes. But I can already tell." He went back to playing SimCity. My instincts were right. Lanark really is one of the best books I have ever read. The book has no introductory section. It just dumps you into this bizarre reality and forces you to keep up. The world is some form of Scotland where the sun just doesn't come out anymore so the citizens have discarded any system of time. Some of the inhabitants have been disappearing. Others come down with strange skin disorders. One such disease is a scaly, black growth that slowly takes over the body. The character Lanark has arrived in this town, Unthank, but has no memory of his life before being on the train on his way here. He is obsessed with searching the sky for the sun. He also has an arm that is covered by the scaly disorder, and the arm seems to be doing things he's not aware of. Lanark's story continues, getting odder and odder until it's taken over by the story of Duncan Thaw, a completely normal boy growing up after World War II in a completely normal version of Scotland. I don't want to reveal any more of the plot because the surprise that comes with every page is a big part of the fun. Everything about this book is a delight. The odd structure, the disturbing illustrations, the completely unexpected twists the book takes. Alasdair Gray manages to hold the whole thing together, never straying too far, never betraying the reader's trust. It's wholly bizarre, but in a joyful kind of way. With each development, I found myself giggling. I shrieked with glee in the epilogue, which finds itself in the middle of book four. The book deals with big, serious issues, yet it never loses its lightness. It's an amazing accomplishment, and I haven't stopped gushing about the book since I read it.
