We recently caught up with Brian Alverson, former camper (violinist) and counselor at Greenwood. What are you up to? I'm in Philadelphia, as Chief Resident at Children's Hospital. When did you first go to Greenwood?
I first went to Greenwood in 1985, when I was 15. My friend Sarah Clendennning's mother convinced my mom that Greenwood was a good idea. Although I wasn't sure for a week or so, Greenwood turned out to be the best place by far that I'd ever been. I stayed for ten years, first as a camper and later as a counselor. During medical school I was a counselor at Junior Greenwood. Tell us a story about your time at Greenwood. Once, when I was a counselor in the Barn, the Hutch counselor and I decided it was time to play a prank. We thought it would be really funny to let a chicken loose in the girls' cabin early in the morning. The first part was a little tricky: We had to convince someone to let us borrow a live chicken. We got some strange responses from people in the area about that we didn't want to buy the chicken, just borrow it. Then we found a woman who understood what we wanted to do and was really enthusiastic. In fact, she wanted to give us a live goat instead. We were afraid a goat would eat a violin and would be too much trouble, so we decided to go with the chicken.

A novel that opens with the narrator's childhood memory of being struck by lightning starts the reader off with expectations of something unusual and ominous. Greenwood, the author of the prizewinning Breathing Water (1999), doesn't disappoint. Indie Brown, living in the woods of Maine with a gentle, nurturing man, may seem to be far away from her Arizona roots, but the connections to the past can't be avoided. A summons from her sister who needs help with their mother brings her physically back to the place where she was formed and, in many ways, that she has never left. Her mother, the sister (who exhibits the same bizarre, dangerous behavior as their mother), the memory of their brother, and the lightning that has left her feeling that she can "smell" the truth are always with her. There is no comfort in her mother's house, only struggles with the past. The return to Maine brings both an understanding of herself and hope. A complicated story of love and abuse told with a directness and intensity that pack a lightning charge. Danise Hoover (Booklist/July 2000) Top of Page Adult Booklist Index Booklist Archive ... Koko wa Greenwood
(Here is Greenwood)
Information Page
Welcome to Greenwood, the most unusual dormitory in Tokyo!
Greenwood, or Ryokurin Ryou, is an all-boys dorm at the prestigious private
high school, Ryokuto Academy. It is also home to some of the weirdest (and
most entertaining) young men in anime or manga!
Koko wa Greenwood is an 11 tankoubon (volume) shoujo manga written by
and Dreams). Six anime OAVs have been subsequently produced. They have
been translated by Software Sculptors and are available on VHS tape in either subbed or dubbed format. What makes Koko wa Greenwood so awesome, you ask? Well, like my other favorite series, Kodomo no Omocha and Marmalade Boy, it's twisted and bizarre, yet wholesome and heartwarming! (Kinda like okra. What a weird vegetable! But I digress. . .) It's also hysterically funny.

31. Elk/Greenwood
A brief history of the town of Elk with photos.
http://www.elkcoast.com/elk/
Greenwood/Elk, A Town With Two Names This Page is Under Construction
(these things take time) In 1868 Kenny saw the possibility of a shipping point from which local produce and redwood products could be loaded on ship for San Francisco. By 1870 there were as many as 11 sailing vessels in the harbor and 80 tie teams hauling ties from surrounding camps. The hillsides and fields south of the cemetery were covered with ties. From this sprung up the town of Cuffey's Cove which preceded Greenwood. Cuffey's Cove While Cuffey's Cove prospered, other men besides Kenny started to think of building loading chutes. Fred Hemke built a chute just north of the Cuffey's Cove harbor for his saw mill two miles up Greenwood Creek. At Dinny Doyle's Point (now St. Anthony's Point) on the north end of Greenwood the Chism Chute was attempted. A third one in Li Foo's Gulch (on the north end of the present Greenwood State Park) was started, but not completed by Lorenzo E. White. Two miles south of Greenwood was the forth at Uncle Abe's Landing. None were successful. The course of history was about to change when L.E. White bought 21 acres of land in Greenwood from his brother-in-law, J.S. Kimball. White complained about the shipping facilities in Cuffey's Cove and was determined to remedy the situation and build a sawmill on Greenwood Creek. White had built a railroad to carry his products to Cuffey's Cove and now all he needed was the chutes. He attempted to buy them for $40,000 but Mr. Kenny wanted $75,000. Undaunted, White began work with surveyors, laborers and seamen in Greenwood to find a suitable location of his own on his land. He proposed to build a steep incline from the cliffs to a wharf build along the rocks in Greenwood Cove. The project took two years to complete but was successful. The wharf lasted the lifetime of the mill he built at the mouth of Greenwood Creek. The success of this wharf basically put Cuffey's Cove out of business and the town drifted into history. Much of Cuffey's Cove packed up and moved to Greenwood.
