KATE Grenville's sunny The Idea of Perfection may surprise readers who have come to see her as a writer focused on such darker themes as the evils of patriarchy and the negative influences of the family on identity development. Grenville, an Australian who won Britain's 2001 Orange Prize for fiction for Perfection , lets us know early in this story that she's out for fun with her protagonists and with life in Australia's small towns, where, as one character explains, "They did things differently." Harley Savage and Douglas Cheeseman, both plain, middle-aged and frayed around the edges, are made for each other. It was my first visit to Wales and I was charmed by it. The shortlisted authors did a reading and a book signing. It never crossed my mind that I might win. So I've had a lovely week not worrying about it all! On Monday I spent the morning in the Guildhall, researching a convict ancestor born in 1777. He was a Thames lighterman. In the afternoon I did a reading at the British Library. It was wonderful, the most responsive audience I've ever had. I went to dinner with Alice Smith, whom I met at Hay. We talked about everything, but I don't think we mentioned one book! I got home at about 12, and because I still had jet lag, I was revving along. So I sat up reading an extremely serious book about the Australian economy. I made a cup of tea - I've drunk more tea here than ever before, appropriately enough.

Tidligere anbefalinger Drømmen om det perfekte forhold af Kate Grenville Anbefalet af projektkonsulent Marie Østergård, Århus Kommunes Biblioteker Lån bogen på Douglas forelsker sig i Harley Savage, en håndarbejdsekspert fra Sydney, som har barrikaderet sit følelsesliv bag eksmandens selvmord. Harley er på ingen måde tiltrækkende i ordets almindelige forstand. Begge er fremmede i Karakarooks sære og hede tørke, men bliver blandet ind i byens kringlede intriger og historier. Ingen af dem passer ind i definitionen af en attraktiv mand eller kvinde, men de tiltrækkes af hinandens skævheder til trods for deres tidligere tragiske erfaringer med kærlighedens smålighed og skyldfølelse. Med "Drømmen om det perfekte forhold" vandt Kate Grenville Storbritanniens største litterære pris "The Orange Prize for Fiction 2001". Hun giver med romanen et fantastisk billede af den ydre snørklethed, der sniger sig ind overalt i den lille australske by. På besynderlig vis efterlader sammenstødet mellem to følelsesmæssige eremitkrebs i disse omgivelser læseren med en sær nænsom ro og fortabelse i både beboernes og menneskehedens dunkle hjørner. Ikke på noget tidspunkt forsøger Grenville at male nostalgiske portrætter eller landsbyidyl, tværtimod gribes man af den nøgne realisme og sindighed, der hviler over romanen. Her er ingen Laura Ingalls eller Rhett Butler, men almindelige mennesker, der får rynker og har affærer med slagteren. Folk der snager, er småskøre og dem, der taler for højt i forsamlinger.
