Grenville: Book is set in small-town New South Wales
Australian novelist Kate Grenville has won the UK's richest fiction award, The Orange Prize. She will receive £30,000 after her book, The Idea of Perfection, was judged to be the best English-language novel of the year written by a woman. Grenville was the only author to appear on two different shortlists - one drawn up by female judges and one by men. Perfect? Book was on both shortlists
But it was the female-chosen shortlist - which also included Margaret Atwood, Jane Smiley and Jill Dawson - from which judges chose the winner. Sydney-based Grenville, whose previous works include Lilian's Story and Dreamhouse, was given the award during a ceremony in London on Tuesday. The Idea of Perfection is the story of a romance between a gawky engineer with jug ears and a large woman with a ragged haircut, set in small-town New South Wales.

English Education: The Long Slow Fuse Model
Kate Grenville
I'm a writer, not an educator, so I don't have anything as coherent as a position on this subject. The only thing I can bring to this discussion is a writer's perspective. I've written 5 books of fiction and 2 books about the writing process (one in collaboration with Sue Woolfe), and writing has been my life and livelihood now for going on twenty years. Thinking about my own English studies at school, and whether they had anything to do with me now being a writer, I was struck by what a long slow fuse the study of English can be. I must have been a cow of a kid to teach. I lie awake and blush about it now. I announced to Mrs Armstrong one afternoon at Cremorne Girls' High that King Lear was terribly overrated. (Mrs Armstrong was good enough not to laugh.) I told anyone who would listen that Jane Austen was irrelevant. None of us in 5A had ever seen anything as silly as an evening spread out against the sky like a patient etherised upon a table, and we thought it was ridiculous to worry about eating peaches. Under the desk another whole world was going on. Under the desk were Salinger, Steinbeck, Nicholas Monserrat, Paul Gallico, John Fowles. Ah, now that was

Finally! Last year's Orange Prize winner, The Idea of Perfection by Kate Grenville, has been published in the United States. Timing could not be better, as we assemble our books for summer reading. Along with Ian McEwan's Atonement , Robert Caro's newest volume about LBJ titled Master of the Senate , and some choice mysteries, be sure to bring Kate Grenville. The Idea of Perfection is a love story reminiscent of some of Anne Tyler's best work. Two unprepossessing middle-aged people, acutely conscious of their shortcomings, meet when work draws them to the little town of Karakarook in New South Wales, Australia. Harley Savage, twice divorced, "never at ease," a fiber artist employed by the Sydney Museum of Applied Arts, has come to assist locals in setting up a "heritage museum." Douglas Cheeseman, also divorced, is a public works engineer who is afraid of heights and is thus assigned only to minor projects. He is labeled "a small-job man." He arrives to replace the old Bent Bridge, a local landmark the state deems unsafe.

This is a sweet, sharp comedy of town and country, love and loneliness, prissiness and the lasting satisfactions of really good design. If you don't believe me, here are the first two sentences: "In his ex-wife's clever decorating magazines, Douglas Cheeseman had seen mattress ticking being amusing. Marjorie had explained that it was amusing to use mattress ticking for curtains the same way it was amusing to use an old treadle Singer as a table for your maidenhair ferns …" What precision. What elegance. What an eye for the vanity of human wishes. Welcome to contemporary Australia, as seen through Kate Grenville's eyes. Two townies, each of them plain, lonely and hitting late middle age, come to the depressed little bush town of Karakarook, New South Wales. Shy, jug-eared Douglas Cheeseman is an engineer. He has been sent to replace the old wooden bridge with a nice new concrete beam. Spiky, big-boned Harley Savage is a textile artist and heritage consultant (part-time). She has been sent to help local people set up a museum of the old pioneer bits and pieces they find lying around at home. Heritage versus engineering; quaint old bridge versus nice straight new one. It doesn't look as though Douglas and Harley will get on.

She has a degree in English and Law from Melbourne University and was admitted to the legal profession on the lst of April 1982, a day which she finds both soothing and significant. She has written a number of plays, including 'The Troubadours' with Stephen D'Arcy, and has worked as a folk-singer, a factory hand, a director, a producer, a translator, a costume-maker, a cook, and also qualified as a solicitor to her great amusement. By the time he was eleven, Justin had completed his first book. For twenty years he wrote only for adults - in addition to studying to be a priest, picking fruit, building cars, mining for iron and working in a sugar mill. It was his daughter Fiona who first introduced him to contemporary children's and young adult's writing. 'Since then,' Justin says, 'I haven't looked back.' Justin lives in Spring Gully, Victoria, and teaches professional writing and editing at Bendigo TAFE.
