Merlin , they say, an English Prophet borne,
When he was yong and gouern'd by his Mother,
Took great delight to laugh such fooles to scorne,
As thought, by Nature we might know a Brother.
His Mother chid him oft, till on a day,
They stood, and saw a Coarse to buriall carried,
The Father teares his beard, doth weepe and pray;
The Mother was the woman he had married.
Merlin laughs out aloud in stead of crying;
His Mother chides him for that childish fashion;
Sayes, Men must mourne the dead, themselues are dying, Good manners doth make answer vnto passion. The Child (for children see what should be hidden) Replies vnto his Mother by and by, "Mother, if you did know, and were forbidden, Yet you would laugh as heartily, as I. This Man no part hath in the child he sorrowes, His Father was the Monke that sings before him: See then how Nature of Adoption borrowes, Truth couets in me, that I should restore him. The Scandinavian brooches of the Viking period (A.D. 800— 1050) were oval and convex, somewhat in the form of a tortoise. In their earliest form they occur in the form of a frog-like animal, itself developed from the previous Teutonic 1-shaped type. With the introduction of the intricate system of ornament described above, the frog-like animal is gradually superseded by purely decorative lines. The convex bowls are then worked a jour with a I~erforated upper shell of chased work over an under shell of impure bronze, gilt on the convex side. These outer cases are at last decorated with open crown-like ornament and massive projecting bosses. The geographical di~ribution of these pecti ar brooches indicates the extent of the conquests of the Northmen. They occur in northern Scotland, England, Ireland, Ice— land, Normandy and Livonia. Elegy on the Death of Sidney
By Fulke Greville
Posted Thursday, February 5, 1998, at 12:30 AM PT
To hear Robert Pinsky read "Elegy on the Death of Sidney," click here Fulke Greville deserves to be better known; I personally consider him to be an equal of Donne, Marvell, Jonson, and the Shakespeare of the sonnets. He was a boyhood friend of Sir Philip Sidney. (An early school notebook of Sidney's contains, in Sidney's childish handwriting, the notation "Fulk Grivil is a good boy.") Greville's admiring biography of his friend, who died young, may have somewhat eclipsed Greville's own reputation. It is important for the reader of the "Elegy on the Death of Sidney" to realize that Sidneya brilliant writer, of extremely noble family, a statesman and soldier who died of war wounds at the age of 32was looked on as a kind of perfect man: one born with the greatest advantages, who had the talent and goodness to make the best of them. (This poem is sometimes attributed to another author, Sir Edward Dyer, also a member of the Sidney-Greville circle.) Robert Pinsky Silence augmenteth grief, writing increaseth rage

fails to obtain admirers. “ La Jeune Fille a l’agneau “fetched, indeed, at the Pourtalès sale in 1865, no less than 1,000,200 francs. One of Greuze’s pupils, Madame Le Doux, imitated with success the manner of her master; his daughter and granddaughter, Madame de Valory, also inherited some traditions of his talent. Madame de Valory published in 1813 a comédie-vaudeville, Greuze, ou l’accordêe de village, to which she prefixed a notice of her grandfather’s life and works, and the Salons of Diderot also contain, besides many other particulars, the story at full length of Greuze’s quarrel with the Academy. Four of the most distinguished engravers of that date, Massard père, Flipart, Gaillard and Levasseur, were specially entrusted by Greuze with the reproduction of his subjects, but there are also excellent prints by other engravers, notably by Cars and Le Bas. See also Normand, J. B. Greuze (1892). , (E. F. S. D.) GREVILLE, CHARLES CAVENDISH FULKE (1794-1865), English diarist, a great-grandson by his father of the 5th earl of Warwick, and son of Lady Charlotte Bentinck, daughter of the duke of Portland, formerly a leader of the Whig party, and first minister of the crown, was born on the 2nd of April 1794.

If Richard Churchley writes one kind of verse , then the lord of the Manor of Alcester, Fulke Greville, Lord Brooke, certainly wrote a very different kind. He was the grandson of Fulke Greville the First, first of that name to receive the manor of Alcester. He was born at Beauchamp Court in 1554 and died in 1628. Greville had a national literary reputation but his verse will hardly commend itself to modern ears. Below is a short poem "Farewell Sweet Boy" Farewell, sweet Boy, complain not of my truth; Thy mother loved thee not with more devotion; For to thy boy's play I gave all my youth, Young master, I did hope for your promotion. While some sought honours, princes' thoughts observing, Many wooed fame, the child of pain and anguish, Others judged inward good a chief deserving, I in thy wanton visions joyed to languish. I bowed not to the image for succession, Nor bound thy bow to shoot reformed kindness, Thy plays of hope and fear were my confession, The spectacles to my life was thy blindness. But Cupid now farewell, I will go play me

58. Sir Fulke Greville - His Funeral
In the last issue a few words were written about fulke’s funeral in1559 and the man, Henry Machyn, who supplied the outward trappings.
http://www.alcester.dial.pipex.com/localpast/85au/funeral.htm
In the last issue
Do not picture the scene as taking place in what you now know as Alcester Parish Church. Try to imagine, rather, the long, narrow, lofty mediaeval church of St.Faith, fragrant with the incense of many centuries, of which only the tower now survives. Fulke departed this life on the 10th November; now it was a month later. With that crowded church, let us hope that it was a hard winter! No doubt they had their methods of embalming and no doubt in the depths of Warwickshire these methods were extremely amateurish. Who applied them? Not Henry Machyn, for it took a month to fetch him from London. A plentiful use of incense at the service would be desirable. Would William Walker consider himself still permitted to use it? He would have known that the Queen insisted on its use in her private chapel, although the services there were now in English, not Latin. If he had a copy of the third edition of the Book of Common Prayer, published this year, he may have considered that the Ornaments Rubric, now inserted for the first time, specially to deal with such things, authorises it. But he was probably old-fashioned and it was probably a necessity in any case. Was the service in English or Latin? Were the Latin services really abolished? Was the 1559 Prayer Book used instead? Bishop Scory wrote that the book had still not been used in Hereford Cathedral as late as October, 1564.

    Greville, Charles Cavendish Fulke 1794-1865, English diarist. As clerk of the Council in Ordinary (1821-59), he was closely associated with Wellington, Palmerston, and other political leaders of the reigns of George IV, William IV, and Victoria. His memoirs (1874-87; ed. by Lytton Strachey and Roger Fulford, 1938) are an invaluable record of the period.
