Aims The Centre for Canadian and Anglo-American Cultures (CCAC) conducts scholarly research into North American literature, geography, and culture, addressing itself to a full spectrum of intercultural issues. As an integral component of our long-standing Research Centre on the "Institutional Mediation of World Literature in Translation," the CCAC focuses particular attention on cultural mediation processes between Canada, Europe, the USA, and the Caribbean. With the expansion of the Centre we wish to acknowledge the increasing importance of Canadian issues for our work. Three of our recent books and exhibitions, for instance, were devoted to the German-Canadian author Felix Paul Greve/Frederick Philip Grove and his role as author and literary mediator. In these projects, we dealt both with mediational processes in European contexts and the transatlantic relations and influences of European cultures in North America. The CCAC fosters interdepartmental and international approaches which extend beyond the traditional fields of scholarship and include Literary, Comparative, Regional and Ethnic Studies, as well as Linguistics and Geography. Furthermore, the Research Centre supports publication ventures, the teaching of Canadian Studies, and the dissemination of knowledge about Canada in the form of cultural events. The CCAC promotes undergraduate and graduate studies in the field of Canadian literature, geography, and culture. Scholarly contacts have been established with a variety of local and international institutions. Within Europe, we cooperate with the neighbouring French universities at Metz and Nancy. In Canada, partnerships have developed with the University of Alberta, the University of Prince Edward Island, the University of Northern British Columbia, and the Canadian Comparative Literature Association. Further contacts are presently being established within the scholarly community of Canadianists in Germany and across Europe. As a long-term target, additional exchange programmes will be developed with our several partner universities. Depending upon the availability of funds, the CCAC will attempt to provide reasonable support to invited guests and resident specialists.

Frederick Philip Grove's "Poems"
Edited and with an Introduction by Terrence Craig Grove's unpublished ninety-two page typescript, entitled simply "Poems," has received little critical attention beyond occasional disparaging comments. The poems are thought to be unrewarding and of limited significance, either by themselves as poems, or in relation to the novels. Certainly these poems are not marginalia to the novels as his stories often are. They are, in fact, focused on an event which seldom intrudes even indirectly into his fiction — the death of his first child, Phyllis May Grove, on July 20, 1927. The typescript is dedicated to her memory and most of the forty-nine poems express the grief of her parents. Thomas Saunders' suggestion of "In Memoriam" is somewhat appropriate, but there is lacking a consistent philosophical movement in any direction. Grove's poems seem short outpourings of despairing grief mixed with briefer hopes that his love and her beauty will survive them both. The sense of fatalism within a senseless universe and the agonized questioning expressed by Grove in his despairing loneliness show closer links with Hardy's work. Death is, ultimately, the theme of these poems, the child's death foreshadowing and mocking the adult's demise. Grove's sincerity in these poems can hardly be questioned. His characteristic aloofness, his pride in being a wandering lone wolf, buckled under the strain as he struggled for the strength to meet this unexpected tragedy. The poems mark his realization that death had anchored him in Canada, and that he would not rove again.

Correspondence - Lorne Pierce and Frederick Philip Grove. 1925-1957, predominant 1938-1945. 12.5 cm (1 Case). Lorne Pierce was born in Delta Ontario in 1890 and educated at Queen's University, Victoria University at the University of Toronto, Union Theological Seminary of New York and Wesleyan Theological College Montreal. He became a Methodist minister and later a minister of the United Church of Canada. In 1920 he was named literary advisor to Ryerson Press and served as its editor from 1922-1960. He died in 1961. Pierce was an ardent Canadian nationalist who encouraged Canadian writers such as Louis Dudek, E.J. Pratt, Earle Birney, and Dorothy Livesay. He was the first editor to accept a novel by Frederick Philip Grove (Settlers of the Marsh) in 1925. His collection of Canadian books, manuscripts and correspondence is deposited at Queen's University. The true identity of Frederick Philip Grove (1879-1948) remained a mystery for many years, particularly since he wrote a fictional autobiography claiming Swedish parentage. He was born in Prussia in 1879 and was raised in Hamburg. Hampered by extensive financial debts, he fled to North America in 1909, working as an itinerant labourer. He became a school teacher in Manitoba, and retired in 1923 to devote more time to his writing. His publications include Over Prairie Trails Settlers of the Marsh A Search for America Our Daily Bread It Needs to Be Said Fruits of the Earth The Master of the Mill
