The decision to expand integrative bio-bibliographical work on FPG resulted in the fullest biography of Greve to date (in German 1997, a thoroughly rewritten and much expanded version in English, 2001. See link: New Book .). This widely discussed and well-reviewed book not only filled important lacunae in previous accounts of Greve's life but also provided readers with a wealth of original and never-before-published documents, including extremely rare and never-before-published photographs and letters. This new evaluation of FPG's German life and literary work and the attendant fund of primary sources formed the basis of a second exhibition, the opening of which was attended by A. Leonard Grove, FPG's son, and his wife, Mary.

Introduction to
Frederick Philip Grove's
Consider Her Ways
by Robert J. Sawyer
Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer or ruler, she prepares her food in summer, and gathers her sustenance in harvest.
Proverbs 6:6-8 Bakka Books , the store after which this publishing imprint is named, makes no bones about its pedigree. The signs out front of the shop on Toronto's Yonge Street proudly proclaim it to be a science-fiction store. And now Bakka Books is bringing out a new edition of an important mid-20th-century Canadian novel, Consider Her Ways . The author, Frederick Philip Grove (1879-1948), is well known in Can-Lit circles; you'll find entries on him in The Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature and The Canadian Encyclopedia , and both of them, of course, mention this, his final novel. But, of course, it is. Consider Her Ways is told entirely from the point of view of intelligent ants an alien perspective if ever there was one. And, indeed, the book is replete with hard science a graduate-level course in myrmecology is sprinkled through these pages. The scientific background infused into the text reminds one of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Theodore Dreiser and Frederick Philip Grove
target=new www.ucalgary.ca/UofC/departments/UP/1-895176/1-895176-39-5.html Synopsis Sexualizing Power presents a new model for reading modern literary naturalism through the lens of feminist and Foucaultian theory. At a time when modernism was fast becoming the dominant paradigm of literature, Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) in the United States and Frederick Philip Grove (1879-1948) in Canada resurrected the conventions of naturalism, a European literary movement generally associated with the novelist Emily Zola. Cleverly exploiting naturalism's focus on the physical body, its desires, instincts, and materiality, they zoomed in on the very issues that preoccupied the modern age – sexuality and the New Woman – aggressively pushing the boundaries in representing female and male sexuality in literature in graphically realist forms. By examining such crucial novels and semi-autobiographical writings as Sister Carrie A Gallery of Women Fanny Essler A Search for America (1927) and Settlers of the Marsh (1925), Gammel shows that far from being always frank and liberating in their portrayal of female sexuality, these novels also contained the New Woman's elan, ultimately defending some traditionally male rights that were rapidly coming under siege in the modernist age.

Toronto: St. Martin's House, 1928 Grove (1871-1948) came to Canada when he was twenty-one, reaching Shaunavon, Saskatchewan in 1893. He spent twenty years in Western Canada working on farms in summer and writing novels in winter. Our Daily Bread, his only novel set in Saskatchewan, is a grimly realistic depiction of the physical hardships and psychological desolation encountered by early settlers.

and Emile Nelligan
Two of the less known Canadian writers are Philip Grove and Emile Nelligan; they are, however, honoured on two stamps issued in a se-tenant pair 1979 by Canada in the series "Canadian Writers". Frederick Philip Grove was born in Radomno (Prussia) as Felix Paul Greve. He was the author of naturalist novels showing the difficult life of Western Canadian settlers. One of his works "Fruits of the Earth" has been featured on the below stamp to the right. Emile Nelligan was the son of David Nelligan of Irish descent, and Emilie A. Hudon de Rimouski. In 1897 he left his studies to become a member of Ecole Litteraire de Montreal. From the age of sixteen he was greatly influenced by authors like Verlaine, Baudelaire, Rodenbach, Rollinat et Edgar A. Poe. In 1899 he was declared mentally disturbed, and spent the next 25 years in an asylum. He died in a hospital in 1941. One of his works was "Le Vaisseau d'Or" ("The Golden Ship"), is featured on the above stamp to the left. Many thanks to Blair Stannard (Canada) for all help and research.
