Many of those who returned home went on their way and began their working careers. I am proud of all the man and women who have served our country. I remember many years ago when the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated. I was watching the dedication on television, and when they showed the Memorial, I replied, "What a beautiful piece of art." Months later, I decided that I was going to make a trip to Washington, D.C. to see The Wall. It was my first trip to Washington, but making it even more memorable was seeing the Memorial and the emotions it was evoking from its visitors. There were families, friends, and men and women who had formerly served in the military. Some visitors left pictures, flowers, cards, letters and other gifts at The Wall. I had known some men who had served during the conflict so I approached a volunteer to ask for her assistance in locating their names. I met others who had family members and friends whose names are inscribed on The Wall that day. Each year after that, I made a trip to Washington and to The Wall. And each year I observed visitors leaving cards, flowers, wreaths and other items for their loved ones and friends. I saw men who had served in Vietnam leave notes for their buddies who did not make it home. I saw them talking to The Wall as if they were talking to their friends. I saw them cry openly. I heard stories about how long it had taken them to make their first trip to The Wall and about how they likely would not return because it was too emotional an experience to repeat. They spoke of experiences they had encountered after returning from Vietnam, including the problems they had faced. Some talked about their desire to return to Vietnam.

FORCES OF IMAGINATION: Writing on Writing
essays by Barbara Guest with drawings by Laurie Reid Spanning three decades, this compilation of essays and talks comprises Barbara Guest's most comprehensive commentary to date on writing and poetics. We expect poets to give a first-hand account of what poetry is. But some poets, when they write criticism, produce a kind of prose that is itself on the verge of being poetry. Valery, Stevens and Marianne Moore belong to this "visionary company." And so does Barbara Guest, whose writing on poetry, collected here, are among the most inspiring works of their kind. It is a deep pleasure to know that such writing can still exist.
John Ashbery In this companion to her important poetry, Barbara Guest may be said to advance a poetics amazed in its dreaminess and lyrical in its critical register. No wonder the Symbolist poetics from which she takes her core meaning is as integral to her poetry as it is: it is the way she thinks! Her aphoristic plasticity is affirmative, affirmative in performing acts on our behalf.
Marjorie Welish Barbara Guest is the author of over twenty books of poetry and fiction. The most recent to appear are

This "impressionist" combination of concentration and fidelity to change evidences the poet's need to marry objectivity and subjectivity. "I try," she writes, "in my acts of composition, to experience subjectivity and objectivity at their most frayed and fruitful and morally freighted juncture . . . I believe accurate representation of this juncture is possible, and that character is involved in approaching that border". This is electrifying, uncomfortable, daily work, undertaken on behalf of the human species, in fear for the fate of the earth: I am a frequency, current flies through. One has

Guest Perspective/Barbara Turner and Bob Cross Newspress.com Santa Barbara, California Developmental centers: Another point of view
For more than 25 years our association has represented the interests of people who live in state developmental centers. We are all unpaid volunteers, comprised mostly of the families of those clients.
As such we were shocked by Terry Boisot's recent guest commentary in your Sunday Voices section. It is replete with errors, exaggerations and outright false information.
Of the many points contained in the article, two stand out as in particular need of addressing. First, the claim that $1.2 billion is required and would be ill spent if the state's developmental centers are upgraded; and, second, the assertion that the cost of care of a client in a developmental center is 10 times the cost of community care. In both of these instances the article
