    Yoko
All today I lie in the bottom of the wardrobe
feeling low but sometimes getting up
    to moodily lumber across rooms
and lap from the toilet bowl, it is so sultry
and then I hear the noise of firecrackers again
all New York is jaggedy with firecrackers today
and I go back to the wardrobe gloomy
trying to void my mind of them.
I am confused, I feel loose and unfitted. At last deep in the stairwell I hear a tread, it is him, my leader, my love. I run to the door and listen to his approach. Now I can smell him, what a good man he is, I love it when he has the sweat of work on him, as he enters I yodel with happiness, I throw my body up against his, I try to lick his lips

Poet Thom Gunn To Read at Amherst College April 11
    March 26, 2002

    Director of Media Relations
AMHERST, Mass.—Poet Thom Gunn will read at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, in Stirn Auditorium at Amherst College. The event, sponsored by the Amherst College Creative Writing Center and the Scott Turow Foundation, is free and open to the public. Born in England in 1929, Gunn studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. He then spent two years in the national service, six months in Paris, and in 1954 relocated to San Francisco where he held a one-year fellowship at Stanford University, working with Yvor Winters. Since then he has made his home in the United States. Daniel Hall, a poet and visiting writer at Amherst College, says, “Thom Gunn has reinvented himself and his art at every stage of his long career. He is an endlessly fascinating poet whose subjects range from the varieties of ecstatic experience to the darkly existential; in his ability to write formal verse as well as free he has few rivals.” The Guardian (London) wrote that “Gunn’s generous poetry, passionate and tactful in equal measure, moves between elegy and celebration with enviable fluency and breadth of technique.”

Form and Freedom: Thom Gunn in America
Report of a talk by Daniel Hall Thom Gunn was the Robert Frost Library Fellow in the spring of 1981, just 20 years before Daniel Hall's talk with the above title was delivered in Porter Lounge to members of the Friends Council and others from the Amherst community. Hall began by setting the scene: choose their alienation manage, in some sense, to have it all: They can suffer to an unusually fine degree that sense of isolation so invigorating to an artist, all the while secure in the knowledge that they wouldn't fit in anyway. For a great number of poets, self-transplantation has been the key to freedom, to a host of freedoms, unavailable to them back home, and it has been America's good fortune to receive more than our share of them. As W. H. Auden, one of our most illustrious immigrants, put it: "God bless the U.S.A., so large / So friendly, and so rich." Hall then turned to the specific case of Thom Gunn whose career, he suggested, "recapitulates (with a little stretching) the received history of American poetry." Gunn's early work grounded him thoroughly in English and European literature; he emigrated early and hopefully to the United States, where he moved away from an Old World formal mastery toward something freer and more usefully modern. "That he should have landed in California seems perfect: what better place on earth to reinvent yourself?"

Aging Gunn has a few bullets left
And it's lock, stock and two smoking barrels By Toh Hsien Min Boss Cupid
    Thom Gunn
Not many people outside Britain remember Thom Gunn, the last surviving member of the triumvirate of British poetry in the 1950s (alongside Larkin and Hughes), although some may remember some of his early poems. His first book, Fighting Terms (1954), was a huge success. It struck a refreshing contrast with 1940s Romantic delicacy, and presaged the plain-speaking and tidy formalism of the Movement. There was barely time for Gunn to be co-opted into the Movement before he was off, to San Francisco, whose gay culture appealed to him and where he settled finally in 1961 after two more collections, A Sense of Movement (1957) and My Sad Captains (1961). The signs were good: his qualifications of terms, of both treaty and treatise, had become more subtle as his poetry became more robust and rebellious, although this tended to hide a particularity which shows up a poem such as ‘Considering the Snail’ as self-justification: Gunn writes that, to see the snail’s “trail of broken white” after the fact, I would never have
    imagined the slow progress
    to that deliberate passion.

on the street in front, in the bar's garbage, identifying unfinished beers and swigging off what was left of them, shameless and exuberant remarking in friendly fashion "It's a doggy dog world." Charming error. He had little idea of his looks caught on a brief sill between youthful lean times and blowziness to come, and too unfocused to try hustling more than beer and a night out of the rain. Later, circling vaguely the bar's deep dark inside, "Hitched up from New Orleans," he said, "here, wanna feel it?" It was already out, pushed soft into my hand. It was a lovely gift to offer an old stranger without conditions

There are stars of course and bit players. Tony was known for the little folded notes he pushed across to cute numbers from out of town. Boy, was his spelling bizarre. Likewise his propositions. But Scorpio was also a porn star, his equipment as well known as his face probably. Behind the bar he wore one of those net shirts so his nipples poked through two of the holes. Memoirs and criticism that chronicle some of the most significant literary currents of our time. "For me the act of writing is an exploration, a reaching out, an act of trusting search for the correct incantation that will return me certain feelings whenever I want them. And of course I have never completely succeeded in finding the correct incantations." Thom Gunn Thom Gunn is well-known as a poet, and increasingly as a literary critic. The Occasions of Poetry includes insightful critical pieces on writers ranging from William Carlos Williams and Gary Snyder to Thomas Hardy and Robert Duncan. "The occasion in all cases," writes Gunn, "is the starting point, only, of a poem, but it should be a starting point to which the poet must in some sense stay true." The first loyalty of a writer who is "true to his occasions," he writes, must be to the facts of experience. The book includes five autobiographical essays, which combine to form an engaging account of the author's development as a poet and to chronicle some of the most significant literary currents of recent decades, both in England and America. Thom Gunn, born in England in 1929, has lived in America since 1954. His books include
