By Brian Snelgrove Peter Gzowski, famed Canadian broadcaster and author, who received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from The University of Western Ontario in October 1997, passed away Thursday. Gzowski was 67.
Peter Gzowski For more than 40 years, Gzowski was a Canadian media legend whether on radio, television, in documentary films or in newspapers, magazines and books. He was perhaps best known for CBC Radio's Morningside program, a show he hosted for 15 years until his retirement five years ago. At his acceptance speech at Western in front of the graduates of the Faculties of Arts and Science and of Brescia, Huron and King's College, Gzowski encouraged the Class of '97 not to forget the public institutions that have made Canada great. "As you prepare to take over the world and the nation that the generations preceding you have shaped, I offer you this thought," he said. "We have built something to be cherished here. We've formed a society of generosity and mutual support." Former roommate Dr. John Girvin, UWO professor and neurosurgeon, introduced Gzowski at that Fall Convocation and lauded him for going on to become "noble, brilliant, interesting, witty, and important" in his long broadcasting career. President Paul Davenport thanked Gzowski for his "inspiring and joyous words," adding that the broadcaster had been an integral part of Canadian life.

Writer and broadcaster Peter Gzowski, with his daily broadcast of personal essays, interviews, debate, music and drama, is the contemporary embodiment of what Canada's pioneer radio-makers dreamed of when they launched national broadcasting. First with the 1970s' free-wheeling This Country in the Morning , and today with CBC Radio's Morningside , he attracts over a million listeners to his three-hour programme. He is their linchpin and connection to all aspects of Canadian life. His deft and incisive interviewing, masked by an intimate and relaxed style, "shows Canadians to themselves," revealing not only the great issues of the day but the small pockets and corners of Canadiana which make up the fabric of the country. His assumption of the intelligence of his listeners is echoed in the hundreds of individual responses he receives. His talent can't be bottled and sold, but his example has been the inspiration for a whole generation of broadcasters. He also works tirelessly for literacy in Canada, and has raised millions of dollars for the cause through his ongoing series of golf tournaments. Peter Gzowski has received wide recognition: seven ACTRA awards, the 1989 John Drainie Award for significant contribution to broadcasting, and seven honorary degrees. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

CANADIAN PERSONALITIES : PETER GZOWSKI
S o engaging were some of Peter’s Gzowski’s radio interviews that many people who were listening to them on their car radios would drive to the shoulder of the highway or park by the curb on a leafy street so they could better pay attention to what was being said.
Peter Gzowski
H e was a giant of radio in this country, "Mr. Canada" to many, "Mr. Broadcasting" to many others. He was a writer, a columnist, a magazine editor, the author of at least 10 books, depending on which ones you count – the marvelous collections of letters sent to This Country in the Morning and Morningside, his personal writings such as The Private Voice, or his elegant true stories of teams and athletes and adventures.
H
H e loved journalism, though he liked the word "reporter" better than "journalist." He loved hockey, baseball, golf, contract bridge, cryptic crosswords, the North and the sweep and content of the country. He nearly lost count of the honorary degrees he collected over the years. In 1999, he was appointed Chancellor of Trent University in Ontario, fittingly on July 1 – Canada Day. He held the position until he died.

Peter Gzowski died today. It is a name that every Canadian knows, yet few outside the country have ever heard of. He hosted the three-hour CBC Radio morning programme Morningside for fifteen years, starting in 1982, and it might as well have been my whole life. The show was, for all intents and purposes, something like a common space for English Canada, a place on the air to listen and be heard. And saying that doesn't do it justice. »

The Great Canadian Communicator
Journalist Peter Gzowski passed away on January 24 at 67, prompting an outpouring of fond memories from Canadians all across the country. "That marvellous voice of his...was so comforting and so quintessentially Canadian," said former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna. "He enveloped us in the cocoon of our country in a way that nobody has ever been able to replace." Agreed Prime Minister Jean Chretien, "While his talent and insight were enough, in themselves, to earn him a place in the front rank of Canadian journalists and broadcasters, what truly set Peter Gzowski apart was the national resonance of his style and approach."
Gzowski's multifaceted career included print (16 books and numerous newspaper and magazine columns), radio (he hosted CBC's "Morningside" from 1982-1997) and television (CBC's "Gzowski in Conversation"). He promoted literacy, his favorite cause, through his writing and the Peter Gzowski Invitational golf tournament. Gzowski died in hospital after a battle with emphysema, leaving his partner, Gillian Howard, and five adult children. A lifelong smoker, he quit in 1999 and, shortly before his death, he had filmed an anti-smoking spot for the Canadian Lung Association.

Peter Gzowski's life does not need to be retold here because those who knew him have heard the story and relish his days as a cub reporter at Moose Jaw Herald , editor of McLeans and fifteen fabulous years as the host of CBC 9:00 to 12:00 Morningside friend Truck drivers, farmers, housewives, fisherman, where ever there was a radio the charming gentle and intelligent voice of Peter Gzowski was there talking to them about everything. Music, art, literature, politics, coping with life, being a Canadian and mostly about being your friend. Slowly the Aging Voluptuary wakes, rubs the sleep from his eyes and stretches to greet the early light. As happens nearly every morning when he wakes these days, almost as soon as the mists of sleep have cleared from his brain, he finds himself ravenously hungry. He quit smoking recently, and his morning appetite has returned. But in later years, when his tasks were all indoors and many of the hours he put in were odd, his day would often begin with just coffee. By the time his working life slowed down and he began to spend more time at home, and in spite of the advice he was given by everyone from his doctor to his children (unknowingly echoing the teaching of their great-grandmother) that the morning meal, the breaking of the fast, was the most important of the day, his breakfast appetites had atrophied. January 2002 Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Dec Feb
Friday, January 25, 2002 at 10:42:32 AM He has the perfect talk radio voice: deep, mellow and gravelly. His voice has the sort of wholesomeness and good cheer that Katie Couric has in her face. Actually, he himself possessed the perfect radio host face and appearance: bearded, bespectacled, grizzled, rumpled, always in sweaters. Even his show, Morningside , had the perfect radio name: simple but poetic.
He had what the Americans call the Q factor (a likability measure for TV anchors) in spades. Try and find me someone in Canada who disliked Peter Gzowski. Heck, I like him and I was never a regular listener of his. Morningside was on at 9am, which means I was already either at school or at work. However in this era of cutbacks, you could always hear re-broadcasts of his shows at odd hours on the CBC. But his likability wasn't due to some contrived grinning-aw-shucks-we're-just-plain-folks act; he had a real intellect, geniune curiosity, and an uncanny ability to connect to people. Besides his infamous skills at interviewing, just listen to other people on the radio and you realize how damn good he is at reading monologues. His voice never gets too monotonous or too pompous or too dramatic.
Want an example of his unique talent? Ironically, you need to switch on the TV instead of the radio, for this is his last interview with Wayne Gretzky. (Gzowski with Gretzkycan you get more Canadian?) Most of the interview is nothing unusual, both men being Mr. Nice Guy, neither fawning over each other. But close to the end, Gzowski does something remarkable. He wishes Gretzky the best of luck for the remainder of the hockey season, and then tells Wayne not to stretch his career too long: "But don't stay too long, eh? Don't go out like Willie Mays."
