Air Canada supports Peter Gzowski golf tournments
Air Canada is pleased to sponsor this summer's Peter Gzowski Golf Invitational in aid of literacy awareness in Canada. The PGI Golf Tournaments for Literacy, founded in 1986 by the late author and CBC radio personality Peter Gzowski, has been a division of ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation since 1993. ABC CANADA is committed to promoting literacy to the general public and the private sector. The PGIs are the most successful literacy fundraising events in Canada, generating over $6.5 million over the past 16 years. Starting in 1986 with one tournament, the PGIs are now held in every Canadian province and territory, with every dollar raised staying in the communities to support local literacy programs. What makes these tournaments unique is that they combine the best of the arts (poetry, music), grassroots literacy programs (adult learners and literacy providers) and golf. Gzowski: he had the courage to be scared
by Robert Fulford
The National Post , January 25, 2002) In 1957, when a five-year-old girl was murdered in a Toronto ravine, the crime brought out the worst instincts of the Toronto Star and the Toronto Telegram , then ferocious competitors. After the police charged a 17-year-old schoolboy, both newspapers prejudiced his chances of a fair trial by running stories that assumed his guilt. The Varsity , the student paper at the University of Toronto, published an editorial by Peter Gzowski that attacked the newspapers and insisted they be censured in court for undercutting the defendant's rights. To his surprise, Gzowski's words reached far beyond the campus. A lawyer read them out at a meeting of the Canadian Bar Association, The Globe and Mail reported the incident, and the editor of the Telegram was outraged. Unfortunately, Gzowski was then living on fees the Telegram paid him for writing campus news. He was fired, and couldn't see how to finish university. But luckily a job opened up on the Moose Jaw Times-Herald , and he grabbed it. As a result, he didn't get a piece of paper from the University of Toronto until 1995, when he was given an honorary degree. There was more luck: this incident caught the eye of Ralph Allen, the editor of

Mr. Gzowski's death, at 4 p.m., was "very, very peaceful," according to Shelley Ambrose, his long-time assistant. "He went to sleep," she said, surrounded by all five of his grown children, his companion of 20 years, Gillian Howard, and the mother of his children, Jennie Lissaman, from whom he was divorced in the early 1970s.

On the evening of Wednesday Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Centre for the Arts, the Peter Gzowski Amphitheatre will be so named. Shortly after his death in January of this year, city council declared that this amphitheatre should be renamed to honour the memory of this son of Galt. This is a small, intimate area suitable for children's story telling, for poetry readings, for improv drama groups. We want it to be filled and overflowing into the corridor behind on this particular evening. Many of the residents of this community went to school with Peter, both Dickson and later GCI. Jeanette Chippindale, Tom Brown, Jim Chaplin to name a few that I know. Peter wrote of his memories of that time, of Dickson Park, of the positive feelings he had about the Waterloo Region.

    In memory
Ode to Peter Gzowski By Ted Canakis On the last week of January 2002 Canada mourned the death of Peter Gzowski at age 67. As was expected, an unusual outpour of grief and sadness, shown only in exception circumstances, covered Canada as the news of Peter’s death spread from coast to coast. Old and young, men, women and children who knew Peter as a man, a writer, a broadcaster, or as the host of CBC’s This country in the morning or Morning side for some 15 years, mourned the death of a great Canadian. In a day long tribute to Peter Gzowski by the CBC, Sheila Rogers, his former assistant and now in charge of the Morning side hardly managed her own emotional outpour as she tried to console a distraught nation. People called to say something, to offer condolences, to say how Peter Gzowski touched or changed their life. Many cried. Those who knew Peter personally spoke of his humanity, his unique way to touch or even to change the life of many, especially of marginalized Canadians. The “uncle of the Nation”, as Allan Fotheringham of the Globe and Mail called Peter Gzowski, was dead.

    Breath Taking Illness
    Health Specialist Laura DiBattista
examines an illness that breathes despair for those who suffer from it. It’s called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and the incurable combination of emphysema and bronchitis is the fifth leading killer of Canadians.
“C.O.P.D. can be a stealth disease, as I happen to know,” testified Peter Gzowksi in a recording he made before his death. “Before I got my diagnosis, we didn’t know a heck of a lot about it.”
But one thing they know for sure is that 90% of all cases are caused by tobacco use. “Most people will survive 10 or 15 years,” said Dr. Roger Goldstein, a respirologist at the West Park Healthcare Centre. But their quality of life is pretty poor, he said. “They are breathless.”
The best thing people can do is quit smoking. “(Diagnosis) is a great motivator. I stopped immediately,” said Anne McKeown, who, as statistics predict, is harder hit by the health effects of smoking because of her gender. She’s lived with C.O.P.D. for ten years, and met Gzowksi at a rehabilitation clinic. “He used to joke that we were at the same breathing academy.” OCCUPATION: Anchor
