THE REAL HIDDEN SCANDAL OF EMILY DICKINSON'S LIFE
by Marilyn Hacker Page 1 It's a great pleasure to be here today and to see so many friendly and familiar and unfamiliar faces and, violet force or lavender menace, here I am. And it's also, I think, a very appropriate way to celebrate the centenary of Emily Dickinson, who would really have appreciated a gathering like this. Ellen Moore said, when writing about Dickinson, that the real hidden scandal of Emily Dickinson's life was not the romances upon which biographers try vainly to speculate, but her embarrassing ignorance of mainstream American literature of the time, instead of which she read, and reread, every Anglo-American woman writer of her time: Helen Hunt Jackson, Lydia Maria Child, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Lady Georgina Fullerton, Diana Maria Craig, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Rebecca Harding Davis, Francesca Alexander, Matilde Macarnus, and of course everything that George Eliot and Mrs. Browning and every single one of the Bronte sisters wrote. "Mrs. Hunt's poems," Dickinson wrote, in an astonishing letter of 1871, "are stronger than any written by women since Mrs. Browning with the exception of Mrs. Lewes." Who but Emily Dickinson cared so much for rating women poets, or cared to read anything by Helen Hunt Jackson, other than Ramona , or cared for George Eliot's poetry, or took care to call her Mrs. Lewes, as she would have preferred?

THE REAL HIDDEN SCANDAL OF EMILY DICKINSON'S LIFE
by Marilyn Hacker Page 2 I'm going to start with a longish poem which is written for another wonderful poet and friend, Marie Ponsot, who is here in the audience today. It's a crown of sonnets called "La Fontaine de Vaucluse," and is indeed a poem for and about women poets. It has an epigraph from Richard Howard's poem "Audiences" which is, "Why write unless you praise the sacred places?" The Fontaine de Vaucluse is, of course, where Petrarch wrote all those sonnets. There's a reference in the first poem to a line from H.D.'sin fact it's from "Tribute to Freud"she's talking about the voyage she made to Carnac with her friend Bryher in 1920. "Always two ladies alone," she says they were called. "We were not alone." I Azure striation swirls beyond the stones
flung in by French papas and German boys.
The radio guide emits trilingual noise.
"Always 'two ladies alone'; we were not alone."
Source, cunt, umbilicus, resilient blue
springs where the sheer gorge spreads wooded, mossed
thighs:
unsounded female depth in a child-sized
pool boys throw rocks at. Hobbled in platform shoes

Claire Malroux

She is the author of numerous volumes of poetry , a selection of which appear in Edge , a bilingual edition with English translations by Marilyn Hacker. Malroux is herself a highly esteemed translator and received the Grand Prix National de la Traduction in 1995. Among the poets whose work she has translated are Derek Walcott, Emily Dickinson, and Emily Bronte. Signed copies of books by Marilyn Hacker and Claire Malroux may be ordered in advance
from the Sweet Briar College Bookshop
On Claire Malroux's Edge "Claire Malroux's piercing and subtly nuanced poems have been sensitively mediated for English readers in Marilyn Hacker's poised translations. Malroux has put such American and British writers as Emily Dickinson and Emily Bronte into French with style and grace; her own work has clearly been shaped not just by the brilliance of these writers ... But also by the technical expertise she brings to the task of translation. And in Marilyn Hacker, herself an extraordinarily accomplished artist, she has found a worthy counterpart to convey her words into English."

To Marilyn Hacker
by Howard A. Landman
I close the book at last, and then my eyes
I also close, to watch the echoes fade:
Old friends departing. Still, to my surprise,
A few remain. They cling like geckoes, splayed
Toes nonchalant to verticality.
But I'm dislodged by all your poetry.
Though likely not your type or even gender,
I'd love to share your table, or your bed,
Then watch you thresh the moment till you render
A tight iambic abstract to be read
By others; knowing you by name, me never,
What could they understand of what had been?
Reality long flown, a poem must sever
A lambent few details from all you've seen.
But oh, to be the beam that merits bending
By that prism,
The image worth reflecting
In that mirror,
The shine so bright it might at last burn paper
Through that lens.

Poetic autobiography has always been the grand theme of the poetry of Marilyn Hacker. "Rooms in Bloomsbury" from her first book, Presentation Piece (1974), might have talked of "The horrors of the personal, revealed / in indiscreetly published cahiers ", but those very horrors, and of course the joys (of erotic love, parenthood, friendship), have animated her chosen forms for over thirty years now. In formal terms she has fairly ransacked the pantheon: spates of sonnets, terza rima , villanelles, sestinas, sapphics, coronas, and much more, which have sounded like no-one else's and so have extended the tonal and thematic possibilities of these forms. In Squares and Courtyards headlong , that she never has time to attend to such effects.
