47. Stigmata - Jessica Hagedorn
THOSE PEOPLE YOU DESPISE. AH HA. TELL ME. AGAIN? AGAIN. THE WOMAN NAILED TO A CROSS. FROM THE BEGINNING. jessica hagedorn A Work in Progress, 1991. back.
http://www.tribes.org/magazine/issue1/story2.html
Stigmata
A WOMAN NAILED TO A CROSS. CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION, SHE IS NOT BLEEDING. A WOMAN SUSPENDED IN A RED VOID. HER LEGS ARE SPREAD, THE PALMS OF HER HANDS UP . . . IN A GESTURE OF . . . SUPPLICATION? BESEECHING? IS SHE SCREAMING OR LAUGHING? HER LEGS ARE CROSSED, TIGHT, FOLDED, CLOSED. WHAT IS POSSIBLE IS NOT VISIBLE. SHE POURS HOT WAX ON HER BALD, BENT HEAD. SHE HOWLS EVEN WHEN SHE SLEEPS. SHE'S A SCAMMER, A THIEF, THE EMPRESS OF SORROW, THE QUEEN OF SELF-PITY. SHE PAINTS EVERYTHING GOLD: THE STOVE, THE REFRIGERATOR, THE RADIO, THE BED, THE PLATES, AND THE SILVER. MIDASIAN MEDEA THE MEDUSA A CLUSTER OF SPIKES NOT SNAKES. HER CROWN OF THORNS. DISSATISFIED WITH HER ROLE AS SPECTATOR, BORED OUT OF HER GOURD, SHE CAUSES SCENES AND CREATES SPECTACLES. IN ONE VERSION, A BLACK MAN, ALSO PAINTED GOLD, HANGS DEAD FROM A TREE. IT'S A PROVOCATIVE IMAGE, A CRASH COURSE THAT'S GOT TONGUES WAGGING. IS THE BLACK MAN IN COLLUSION? A PERFORMER OR A LIFE-SIZE MANNEQUIN? A SELL-OUT OR A VISIONARY? EXACTLY THREE FEET AWAY, SHE HAS SET A TABLE FOR ONE WITH A LACE CLOTH, PLATE, FORK, KNIFE, SOUP SPOON, TEASPOON, GOBLET, AND GOLD LAME NAPKIN. A SHIMMER OF GOLD DUST SPRAYED ON EVERYTHING WE SEE, THE HANGMAN'S NOOSE A GHASTLY CHANDELIER.

This is an ongoing compilation, with links, of Filipino American authors and titles published in the Americas. This list may also include some titles published in the Philippines if the book focuses on, or is related to the Filipino American experience. For example, I have included Bulosan's The Laughter of My Father because, although it focuses on rural life in the Philippines, it was published in the United States during WWII partly to raise the morale of American forces in the Philippines, and partly to "reintroduce" Filipinos to America in their role as allies. Expect weekly changes and additions to this bibliography. PRIMARY Anthologies

A novelist, poet, and performance artist, Hagedorn emigrated from the Philippines when she was 14 years old. She was encouraged in her writing by poet and translator Kenneth Rexroth, who edited her first book of poems, Four Young Women (1973). Hagedorn came to national attention with the publication of her novel Dogeaters (1990), which was nominated for the National Book Award. Dogeaters is a phantasmagorical saga of the Philippines during the 1970s, at the height of the Marcos regime. Three years later, she edited an influential anthology of Asian American literature called Charlie Chan is Dead: An Anthology of Contemporary Asian American Fiction (1993). For 10 years she was the lead singer of the Gangster Choir band, which became the basis for her novel, The Gangster of Love (1996). Hagedorn added playwright to her accomplishments with the stage adaptation of her novel Dogeaters at the New York's Public Theater in 2001.

Born in the Santa Mesa section of Manila in 1949, Jessica Hagedorn traces her early inspiration to a mother devoted to painting and a maternal grandfather who was an accomplished writer and political cartoonist. Situated within a colonial heritage of Catholic schooling and U.S. cultural hegemony, Hagedorn found herself drawn to Hollywood movies and Western literary classics—but equally to melodramas and radio serials in Tagalog. This predilection for crossing boundaries defines Hagedorn’s cultural productions, which include poetry and fiction, theater pieces and performance art, and music and screenplays.
Moving to San Francisco at the age of fourteen proved pivotal in shaping Hagedorn’s consciousness. Although eventually attending the American Conservatory Theater, Hagedorn attributes a substantial part of her artistic development to her early exposure to San Francisco’s social and literary scene. The family’s frequent moves through diverse neighborhoods contributed, along with her unimpeded appetite for browsing bookstores, to her sense of multiculturalism. She cites Bienvenido Santos, Amiri Baraka, Ishmael Reed, Jayne Cortez, and Víctor Hernández Cruz, as well as Gabriel García Márquez, Manuel Puig, and Stéphane Mallarmé, as among her literary influences. No less vital was her participation in San Francisco’s Kearny Street Writers’ Workshop, which introduced her to Asian American history and literature and helped infuse her with the spirit, passion, and social commitment of the late 1960s.

Love Letters
1956. The air-conditioned darkness of the Avenue Theater smells of flowery pomade, sugary chocolates, cigarette smoke, and sweat. All That Heaven Allows is playing in Cinemascope and Technicolor. Starring Jane Wyman as the rich widow, Rock Hudson as the handsome young gardener, and Agnes Moorehead as Jane’s faithful friend, the movie also features the unsung starlet Gloria Talbot as Jane’s spoiled teenage daughter, a feisty brunette with catlike features and an innocent ponytail.
Rock Hudson’s rustic gardener’s cottage stands next to a frozen lake. The sky is a garish baby-blue, the clouds are ethereal wads of fluffy white cotton. In this perfect picture-book American tableau, plaid hunting jackets, roaring cellophane fires, smoking chimneys, and stark winter forests of skeletal trees provide costume and setting for Hollywood’s version of a typical rural Christmas. Huddles with our chaperone Lorenza, my cousin Pucha Gonzaga and I sit enthralled in the upper section of the balcony in Manila’s “Foremost! First-Run! English Movies Only!” Theater, ignoring the furtive lovers stealing noisy kisses in the pitch-black darkness all around us.
Jane Wyman’s soft putty face. Rock Hudson’s singular, pitying expression. Flared skirts, wide cinch belts, prim white blouses, a single strand of delicate, blue-white pearls. Thick penciled eyebrows and blood-red vampire lips; the virginal, pastel-pink cashmere cardigan draped over Gloria Talbot’s shoulders. Cousin Pucha and I are impressed by her brash style; we gasp at Gloria’s cool indifference, the offhand way she treats her grieving mother. Her casual arrogance seems inherently American, modern, and enviable.
