Haley, Alex,
Haley on the set of Roots, in full ALEX PALMER HALEY (b. Aug. 11, 1921, Ithaca, N.Y., U.S.d. Feb. 10, 1992, Seattle, Wash.), American writer whose works of historical fiction and reportage depicted the struggles of American blacks. Although his parents were teachers, Haley was an indifferent student. He began writing to avoid boredom during voyages while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard (1939-59). His first major work, The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965), was an authoritative and widely read narrative based on Haley's interviews with the Black Muslim spokesman. The work is recognized as a classic of black American autobiography. Haley's greatest success was Roots: The Saga of an American Family (1976). This well-researched genealogyborn of the history recited by Haley's maternal grandmothercovers seven American generations, from the enslavement of Haley's African ancestors to his own genealogical quest. The work forcefully shows relationships between generations and between races. Roots was adapted as a multi-episode television program, which, when first broadcast in January 1977, became one of the most popular shows in the history of American television. That same year Haley won a special Pulitzer Prize. A successful sequel was first broadcast in February 1979 as

Either you deal with what is the reality, or you can be sure that the reality is going to deal with you. My fondest hope is that "Roots" may start black, white, brown, red, yellow people digging back for their own roots. Man, that would make me feel 90 feet tall. I look at my books the way parents look at their children. The fact that one becomes more successful than the others doesn't make me love the less successful one any less. HALEY, ALEX U.S. Writer Alex Haley, an African American writer, is best known for as the author of the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family , from which two television miniseries, Roots and Roots II , were adapted. The novels, loosely based on Haley's own family, presented an interpretation of the journey of African Americans from their homeland to the United States and their subsequent search for freedom and dignity. The novel was published in 1976, when the United States was celebrating it's bicentennial. During the last week of January 1977 the first Roots miniseries was aired by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). Its phenomenal success surprised everyone, including Haley and the network executives who had "dumped" the program into one week, fearing the subject matter would not attract an audience. Instead Roots garnered one of the largest audiences for dramatic television in the U.S. history of the medium, averaging a 44.9 rating and a 66 share. The success of Roots went far beyond attracting a large audience, however. The miniseries and Alex Haley, became a

Monumental The Tribute to the Life and Career of Alex Haley by MCPO Gary Petty, USCGR The Tribute to the Life and Career of Alex HaleyHundreds gathered in Knoxville, Tenn., one day last spring to take part in the unveiling of a 13-foot statue of "Chief Alexander Murray Palmer Haley." Haley is one of the Coast Guard’s most prized members who has become known by many as "America’s Storyteller." Those stories later inspired and prompted Haley to write Roots, a best-seller that won the Pulitzer Prize and was published in 37 languages. Haley received 17 honorary academic doctorate degrees and more than 300 special recognitions. He was the first and only person to receive an honorary degree from the Coast Guard Academy, presented by President George Bush. "Alex was a friend to many of us here," said Knoxville Mayor Victor H. Ashe. Haley, who lived on a 120-acre farm near Norris, Tenn., the last 14 years of his life, also owned a condominium in Knoxville. "Alex taught us that we are more alike than different," said Ashe. "He had a unique ability to connect with persons of diverse backgrounds. He thought we should celebrate our common connections instead of dwelling on our differences."

ALEX HALEY (1921-1992) Alexander Murray Palmer Haley, the oldest of three sons (George and Julius), was born to Simon and Bertha (Palmer) Haley on August 11, 1921, in Ithaca, New York. Six weeks after his birth, Simon and Bertha returned to Henning, Tennessee, and presented Will and Cynthia Palmer with their grandson, Alex Haley. Alex and his mother remained with the Palmers, while Simon returned to Cornell University to complete his graduate studies in agriculture. After the death of Will Palmer in 1926, Simon Haley joined his wife and family in Henning and operated the Palmer business. In 1929, Simon Haley began his teaching career, and the family moved. Two years after they relocated, Bertha Haley died in Normal, Alabama.
At the age of fifteen, Alex Haley was graduated from high school. He attended college for two years, then in 1939 he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard as a messboy. While in the Coast Guard, he began writing short stories; it would be eight years later, however, before any of his stories were published. Approximately thirteen years after entering the Coast Guard, Haley became chief journalist. After twenty years of military service, Haley retired in 1959. Upon his retirement, he embarked upon a new career as a writer. He became an assignment writer for Reader's Digest magazine and later was associated with Playboy magazine, where he inaugurated the "Playboy Interviews" feature. Soon he was recognized for his insightful and in-depth interviews. His interviews of Malcolm X lead to his first book

Haley The Master Storyteller Whose `Roots' Ran Very Deep
By Jacqueline Trescott
The Washington Post Washington One morning last week Alex Haley stood at a government-issue lectern in an ordinary hearing room in downtown Washington and once again made you feel like you were right on the front porch in Henning, Tenn. In a deep, velvety voice Haley told the story of Queen Haley, his paternal grandmother, and described her in such lush physical and emotional detail that, once again, a Haley became part of your family. It was your grandmother dipping snuff, swatting and spitting at the lightning bugs, rocking in the pine chair and talking about old times. And, as Haley listed his various projects a miniseries on Queen, a series of interviews with black filmmakers, the long-awaited story of Henning once again you knew something of magnitude was brewing. "Queen was born near Florence, Alabama, on a plantation called the Forks of Cypress," he said. "Her father was the master and her mother a mulatto weaver. She was raised as the servant of her half-sisters. She was what they called `a child of the plantation.' " After the Civil War, Queen was freed and was chased into a forest. "There she joined three couples, and this was the first time she had ever confronted what being black was. I just can't wait to write that scene." Haley, who died early Monday in Seattle, where he had been scheduled to speak, pulled us into the drawing rooms of living history and created characters that became part of the American lexicon.
