    February 11, 1992 OBITUARY
Alex Haley, 70, Author of 'Roots,' Dies
By ERIC PACE lex Haley, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Roots: The Saga of an American Family," which chronicled his ancestors' origins in Africa and their passage from slavery to freedom in America, died yesterday at Swedish Hospital Medical Center in Seattle. He was 70 years old and had homes in Knoxville, Tenn., Norris, Tenn., and Seattle. He died of cardiac arrest, said a spokeswoman for the hospital, Jane Ann Wilder. Mr. Haley's son, William Alexander Haley, said at a news conference in Seattle yesterday that his father had apparently suffered a heart attack and been taken to the hospital by ambulance. He was scheduled to speak today at the Bangor Naval Submarine Base at Bremerton, Wash., 15 miles from Seattle. "Roots," which was published in 1976, spurred an interest in genealogy among Americans of many ethnic heritages. The ABC television mini-series fashioned from the book attracted millions of viewers early in 1977. Sharing a Legacy The work, based in part on research in Africa, began with Mr. Haley's creative depiction of the birth of one of his ancestors, Kunta Kinte: "Early in the spring of 1750, in the village of Juffure, four days upriver from the coast of The Gambia, West Africa, a manchild was born to Omoro and Binta Kinte. Forcing forth from Binta's strong young body, he was black as she was, and he was bawling."

Haley 1921-1992 Born in Ithica, New York, August 11, 1921, Alex P Haley graduated from high school at 15, attended State Teacher's College in Elizabeth City, North Carolina for two years and, at the urging of his father, enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1939 as a mess attendant, 3rd class.
During his years of service, Haley developed and honed the writing skills that made him the first Coast Guard Journalist. He continued to write, penning the worldwide best seller Roots, which received the1977 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, and The Autobiography of Malcolm X, based on Haley's extensive conversations with the famous minister of the Nation of Islam.
Serving as ship's cook in the Pacific during World War II, Haley spent most of his Coast Guard duty in long months at sea. While at sea on the CGCs MENDOTA and MURZIM, Haley took up letter writing, and in one week could knock out 40 letters and receive just as many replies. His mail-call success prompted shipmates to enlist his help with their letters, including love letters. During his time at sea on various cutters, Haley set down sea stories recounted by old salts aboard. Eight years and hundreds of rejection slips later, he had his first story published. In 1944, Haley was assigned to edit "Our Post," the official Coast Guard publication. In 1945 he won the Ship's Editorial Association Award and served as an assistant to the public relations officer at Coast Guard Headquarters until 1959.

Journalist, writer. Alexander Murray Palmer Haley was born in Ithaca, New York, on August 11, 1921. He grew up in Henning, Tennessee, and graduated from high school at age 15. Haley studied at State Teachers College in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, for two years, and joined the Coast Guard in 1939. He started out as a mess attendant, Third Class, and in 1952 became the first to hold the title of Coast Guard Journalist. Haley's friends quickly discovered his writing talent and began requesting his help when writing their own love letters. Haley also used his talents to recount the old tales of sea captains, which turned into his first published story. In the 1950s, Haley served as a public relations liaison, turning run-of-the-mill Coast Guard news into exciting, media-friendly narratives. After 20 years of service, Chief Journalist Haley retired from the Coast Guard in 1959 to pursue his career as a journalist full-time. He wrote stories for Playboy and Reader's Digest, but his career exploded in 1965 with the publication of The Autobiography of Malcolm X.
