Brother of "Roots" Author Alex Haley Cites Racial Healing in America
By Jim Fisher-Thompson
Washington File Staff Writer Washington File (Amb. George Haley comments on Kunta Kinte Memorial) Washington George Haley, former U.S. ambassador to The Gambia and brother of "Roots" author Alex Haley, says the recent dedication of the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial in Annapolis, Maryland, not far from Washington, was as much a symbol of racial "healing" as a reminder of the shameful history of black slavery in America. "The meaning of this statue was to show the connecting links between Africans and Americans as well as the progress the races have made here to correct and reconcile past injustices," Haley said during an interview with the Washington File on July 1. More than 1,000 people attended the unveiling June 12 of the monument to Kunta Kinte, an African slave who arrived at the Annapolis slave market in 1767 from the region in West Africa that later became The Gambia. After extensive genealogical research, Alex Haley determined that he was a descendent of the African and wrote a best-selling book based on Kinte's life, called "Roots." Published in 1976, the book won the National Book Award and in 1977 Haley received a special Pulitzer Prize for the work. It was later made into a popular television series that received worldwide acclaim. George Haley, who has been the executor of his brother's estate since Alex Haley died 10 years ago, said, "I believe a kind of healing comes when people are able to really look at what has happened in this country in this case, slavery and have genuine dialogue about it. Although there have been certain parts of our history" that have been cruel and unfair to blacks, "we have to realize that blacks have made tremendous social and political progress since those days."

AUTHOR PROFILE
Alex Palmer Haley (1925-1992) Alex Haley is the author of 'Roots' and 'Malcolm X', two books which have phenomenally influenced the way African-Americans perceive themselves. 'Roots' suggests how each one of us is both a product and a vehicle of history. This book traces Haley's lineage up to the man who was brought as a slave from Africa. Published in 1976, 'Roots' excited interest in genealogy among Americans of African origin. Alex Murray Palmer Haley was born on August 11, 1921, to Simon and Bertha Palmer Haley. He grew up in an extended family. As a child he heard many stories from his grandmother about his ancestors, especially about Kunta Kinte, who had been brought from Africa on a slave-ship, seven generations back. It was these accounts of Kinte which later inspired Haley to write 'Roots'. Having never been too interested in academics, Haley enlisted in the coast guard during World War II. As a coast guard Haley started writing stories to fight boredom. After twenty years of service Haley left the coast guard to become a full-time writer. He wrote for magazines such as 'Reader's Digest' and 'Playboy'. 'Malcolm X', his first book, published in 1965 became a best-seller, establishing his reputation as a writer. Soon after finishing ' Malcolm X', Haley stumbled upon the names of his maternal great-grandparents, while going through post-Civil War records in the National Archives in Washington D.C. This set him on an odyssey in search of his roots. His researches in the archives and libraries of many countries took him twelve years. He even made a journey by sea, following a route which slave traders might have taken. Finally, travelling into the heart of Africa, he found the village of Juffure , the home of Kunta Kinte. There he met a griot, a native oral historian, who could tell him the story of Kunta Kinte's family.

The Kunta Kinte - Alex Haley Memorial Why a Memorial? The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial, located at the City Dock in historic Annapolis, portrays in word and symbol the triumph of the human spirit in very difficult times and conveys Alex Haley's vision for national racial reconciliation and healing. It stresses the importance of maintaining strong family connections and of preserving and honoring one's family history and cultural heritage. The Memorial is dedicated especially to all of our African ancestors whose names, unlike Kunta Kinte's, are lost forever in the oceans of time. It also is for all people - African, Asian and European - who arrived in the New World in bondage, whose unpaid labor forged the backbone of this nation's rise to greatness. It is dedicated also to their descendants, who strive to create a nation that celebrates ethnic diversity within the spirit of brotherhood, mutual respect, and understanding. About the Memorial The Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial is the only memorial in the country that commemorates the actual name and place of arrival of an enslaved African. The Memorial consists of three distinct areas:

January 16, 2002 ON Friday, NBC will air a special commemorating the 25th anniversary of the landmark miniseries based on Alex Haley's book "Roots." Ironically, the original series aired on ABC - but officials at that network took a pass on broadcasting the tribute.
What's truly amazing, however, is that "Roots" is receiving a reverential tribute at all. For while the miniseries was a remarkable - and important - piece of television,
the book on which it was based has now been widely exposed as a historical
hoax. Unfortunately, the general public is largely unaware of how Haley's monumental family autobiography, stretching back to 18th-century Africa, has been discredited. Indeed, a 1997 BBC documentary expose of Haley's work has been banned by U.S. television networks - especially PBS, which would normally welcome such a program. Coincidentally, the "Roots" anniversary comes amid the growing scandal over disclosures of historian Stephen Ambrose's multiple incidents of plagiarism. Because as Haley himself was forced to acknowledge, a large section of his book -

Either you deal with what is the reality, or you can be sure that the reality is going to deal with you. My fondest hope is that "Roots" may start black, white, brown, red, yellow people digging back for their own roots. Man, that would make me feel 90 feet tall. I look at my books the way parents look at their children. The fact that one becomes more successful than the others doesn't make me love the less successful one any less. "You can never enslave somebody who knows who he is," Haley once observed. A journalist with Playboy , Haley's first assignment in 1959 was an interview with jazz great Miles Davis . An interview with Malcolm X led to Haley's first book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X "History is written by the winners," Haley said. Inspired by stories told by his grandparents, Haley traveled to Gambia, West Africa in 1967 and begun a nine-year research into the origins of his family. "In every conceivable manner, the family is the link to our past, the bridge to our future," the writer explained. He won the hearts of millions throughout the world with Roots (1976), the fictionalized autobiography that traced his family back seven generations to Kunta Kinte, his forefather who was kidnapped and brought to America on a British slave ship.
