Forever by Pete Hamill 613 pages, 2003 The Never-ending Story Reviewed by David Abrams Pete Hamill knows New York. As editor of both the New York Post and the New York Daily News and frequent contributor to the New York Times and The New Yorker , there's little doubt his passion for and knowledge of the city and its people runs deep. Cut his veins, he probably bleeds apple juice. In his latest novel, Forever , Hamill takes that love and understanding and wraps NYC in a big, smothery embrace. Emphasis on the smothering part. Forever is ambitious and frequently unsuccessful as it tries to chart a huge chunk of Gotham history in 600 tedious pages. On the passage to America, Cormac befriended some of the African slaves; that friendship is later rewarded when a shaman gives Cormac the "gift" of eternal life so that he can wreak his revenge on future generations of Warrens. One stipulation: Cormac cannot set foot off Manhattan Island (or, I imagine, he'll turn into a pillar of salt). The book requires readers to check their disbelief at the front door. If you cannot accept the fact that a little voodoo can give a 20-something Irish lad unblemished eternal life sort of like a centuries-old Dick Clark then you won't be able to squeeze even the smallest pleasure from this novel.

Read the first chapter of
Forever
on the Little, Brown and Company web site. Former editor in chief of both the New York Post and New York Daily News , Pete Hamill is a New Yorker through and through. Forever is truly his labor of love for the city.
This is the story of Cormac O'Connor, an Irishman who arrives in a budding America and, through fantastic circumstances, is bequeathed with the gift of immortality so long as he never leaves Manhattan island. But Forever is also the story of the birth of the great city of New York growing pains and all seen through Cormac's eyes.
The novel begins with Cormac growing up in an Ireland full of distrust and religious animosity. When both his parents are killed at the hand of the powerful Earl of Warren, Cormac vows revenge, and so begins what will become an epic quest to ensure no son of the Earl will live to carry on his bloodline.
While the main character is a work of fiction, you can see a lot of the author in him. Over the course of his many lifetimes, Cormac is frequently employed as a reporter, observing and participating in the city he loves. And this is where I see Hamill writing about his own love of the city and his love of the publishing world.
According to a source at Little Brown Books, Hamill celebrated the completion of his manuscript for

It Takes Forever

Pete Hamill
Published by Little, Brown and Company Review by W. R. Greer There are just a few writers who should attempt to write a novel about the history of New York City, and Pete Hamill is probably at the top of that list. He's been the editor in chief of the New York Daily News and the New York Post and has written for the New York Times The New Yorker , and Newsday . To tell the story of the city, he creates the character of Cormac O'Connor, an Irish boy who emigrates to Manhattan in 1740 and remains there forever. It's an interesting plot concept to have one person see and tell the whole history of a city, as opposed to a sweeping drama following a family from generation to generation. Unfortunately, this approach does not succeed, despite the author's best efforts. Predictably enough, Cormac's father is murdered when the Earl of Warren tries to take a horse from him. In a controlled rage that burns from the page, Cormac does his best to exact his revenge, killing at least one of the earl's henchman and burning his estate to the ground. Upon learning that the earl has left for the colonies in the New World, Cormac races to the coast in time to catch the next ship. Starving, freezing, and moving past the dead who have frozen to death in winter's grip, Cormac's magical steed, Thunder, reaches the dock just as the ship is pulling away. With a mighty leap, Thunder boards the boat, deposits Cormac on deck, and swims back to shore.

How Do Mexico and the US Perceive Each Other? Keynote Speech presented by Pete Hamill At the Images of Mexico in the US Media symposium Columbia University on February 4th, 2000 In the year that followed, Mexico revealed itself to me in a thousand small ways, and changed my life. As a stranger, I was now the marginalized one. I had arrived bearing other histories and different myths. My command of Spanish was faulty at best, barbaric and laughable at its worst. Ni modo. Mexicans were kind to me. They were patient with me. Most of all, they affirmed in me certain notions that were also true of the Irish and Italian and Jewish immigrants I had grown up with in distant Brooklyn. The absolute importance of family. The corollary importance of work. The insistence that men and women must live with a certain dignity, a dignity that had almost nothing to do with money. The poorest Mexican campesino, taking a hard living from the indifferent earth, could live with dignity. That insistence on basic dignity had its dark side, of course. The codes of machismo often demanded that certain slights or personal insults must not go unanswered. But the same codes established the limits beyond which men must not go, except at great risk. This made for a formality in manners that served as one of the binding elements in Mexican society; everybody knew the rules. There were always certain lines that you did not cross. These were lessons that a young person should always learn; in my case, Mexico was a kind of graduate school, elaborating and codifying things that I already knew about what it meant to be human. Much has changed in Mexico since I was young; but the core if its spirit remains the same. Mexico is a country that reminds us in its dailiness about the need to be more human.

For Pete Hamill, news is a verb Published in Sun Publications 02/07/03 Are you reading about everyday heroes? If you're not, you've been missing a lot of the fun associated with this year's Naperville Reads program. I write "this year's" because although the program is only in its second year, in this highly literate community that supports libraries and bookstores I can see it existing for some years to come. Although the city of Chicago may be able to contain itself to selecting a single book at a time, Naperville is featuring three different authors for its citywide reading program. Children's books are represented by Kevin Henkes, books for young adults by Jerry Spinelli, and books for adults by Pete Hamill. As someone whose home contains several thousand books, I couldn't let the opportunity pass to add at least one more while Naperville Reads is going on. Last year, I tried to select one of author Gary Paulsen's lesser-known works and ended up with a slender tome called "The Gun," which traced the mythical history of a weapon manufactured for use in the Revolutionary War. This year, figuring that I was probably an adult, though others might contest that, I settled on Hamill.
