A Testimonial From A Recent Visitor "Dear Barbara, I'm afraid that we departed without an opportunity to thank you for our wonderful stay at the Alexander Hamilton House. We both thought that our accommodation was superb. The "Library" was spacious, spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. I also enjoyed my personal "aquasize" session in the pool. As well, the breakfasts were delicious and generous. All in all we had a most relaxing, enjoyable holiday. We will definitely recommend your establishment to any of our friends travelling to the area. We hope to be able to return soon. Again, thank you for the hospitality. It was very much appreciated." Biography

Aaron Burr, (1756-1836), American politician and adventurer. Dynamic and ambitious, he built a strong political following and rose to the office of VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1801-1805). But he is remembered more for his duel with Alexander Hamilton, which resulted in the latter's death, and for his schemes of empire, which resulted in his trial and acquittal on charges of treason. Burr was born in Newark, N.J., on Feb. 6, 1756. Of distinguished ancestry, he was the son of the Reverend Aaron Burr, the cofounder and second president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), and Esther Edwards Burr, the daughter of the New England theologian Jonathan Edwards. Both parents died before he was three years old, and his early training was assumed by an uncle, the Reverend Timothy Edwards. A precocious youth who would rebel against authority throughout his life, Burr escaped the strict discipline of his uncle's home to enter Princeton as a sophomore in 1769 at the age of 13. Graduating with honors in 1772, he studied theology and then abandoned it for law, but he had not progressed far when the Revolutionary War changed his plans. Burr served on Benedict Arnold's staff, where he met James Wilkinson, who was to figure in his later plans; he then served briefly with George

Scottish Philosophy in the 19th Century
1. The Enlightenment Background
While Scottish philosophy of the 18th century is studied extensively, Scottish philosophy in the 19th century is neglected to the point of being virtually unknown. Francis Hutcheson, David Hume and Thomas Reid and are names familiar to almost all philosophers; Sir William Hamilton, James Frederick Ferrier and Alexander Bain to hardly any. Yet in their day, the names of these philosophers were not only prominent in Scotland, but widely known across Europe. To understand this decline in reputation, it is necessary to see 19th century Scottish philosophy against the background of the century that preceded it. According to George Davie there is an Cast in these terms it is easy to place the two most famous philosophers of the Scottish Enlightenment on either side of the divide. On the side of the first is Hume, whose skeptical conclusions arise from the Berkleyan presupposition asserted in the very first sentence of his Treatise of Human Nature All the perceptions of the human mind resolve themselves into two distinct kinds, which I shall call IMPRESSIONS and IDEAS. The difference betwixt these consists in the degrees of force and liveliness with which they strike upon the mind. (Hume 1888: 1)

Major General Alexander Hamilton
A A lexander was educated early by his mother and as well as a presbyterian clergyman on St. Croix. He was employed at the age of 12 as a clerk in a general store and was found to be quite exceptionable in his job as well as in his writing. He could speak French fluently. He had a strong desire to go to college and by 1772, his aunts scrimped and saved to send him to New York. H e started school in Elizabethtown NJ, but by 1773 was entered at Kings College (Now Columbia). He was quite a mature young man, with a strong grasp on political issues with a working knowledge of British and American government which he exhibited in a series of anonymous pamphlets so discerning, they were attributed to John Jay. He was only 17 at the time. I n 1775, discontinuing his education, he founded a volunteer military company and on March 14, 1776, was commissioned Captain of the Provincial Company on New York Artillery. He exhibited great skill and intelligence in his duties with artillery, and Nathanael Greene noticed. (It may have been Greene who introduced Alexander Hamilton to George Washington). He was asked to serve on the staff of Lord Stirling, which he declined, and continued his career with the artillery effectively at Long Island, Harlem Heights, White Plains...as well as seeing action at Trenton and Princeton in the New Jersey campaign. W H amilton spent the winter of 1777-1778 with Washington and the Continental Army at Valley Forge. It was during this winter that Brigadier General Horatio Gates tried unsuccessfully to incriminate Hamilton during the Conway Cabal.

Biography of Alexander Hamilton
This principal architect of the Federalist Papers is exceptional and enigmatic among figures of the revolutionary period. Belatedly and only grudgingly admitted to the canon of great American thinkers, Hamilton's importance as early nationalist, leading exponent of Federalism, and political and financial visionary in the critical post-revolutionary years only fully came to light in the mid-twentieth century, as scholars eyeing the financial and administrative histories of the early United States began to reconsider his achievements. He is best remembered as an outspoken proponent of strong central government and for his authorship of the Federalist Papers, but his many other achievements and characteristics make him a difficult figure to grasp. He was a brilliant, influential, and well-respected patriot, but he was also a fiercely ambitious self-promoter and opportunist, criticized for his arrogance as much as he was admired for his intellect and drive. In spite of his inability to effect much of an influence at Philadelphia, Hamilton nevertheless became the Constitution's most vocal supporter in New York during the ratification debates. Even though the document probably fell short of his desires, he spared no effort in promoting it during a critical period in arguably the most critical state. The primary means by which he did this was of course the publication of the Federalist Papers. Exactly how many of the anonymous letters comprising this work were written by Hamilton is in dispute, but it appears he wrote at least 51 of the 85 total tracts. The essays were less useful convincing voters directly of the Constitution's necessity, but they became a staple for public debaters in Virginia and New York. They clearly helped enhance the force of Federalist arguments in the key debates, bargains, and negotiations leading up to ratification.
