He is one of the great writers of the twentieth century
, though his best works were written before 1900. He is one of the most influential European novelists of the last hundred years, yet he is not well known in the United States. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, the most important Norwegian author since Ibsen, he is often ignored in his own country. He is Knut Hamsun novelist of genius, radical individualist, supporter of Hitler, Quisling, and the Nazi occupation of Norway during World War II. Hamsun, in Mysteries, Pan, and Hunger, wrote three of the greatest novels of the late nineteenth century, novels which created a new literary style and which delineated a new literary hero: the alienated loner. In Growth of the Soil (1917), he produced an epic agrarian novel that describes, with Biblical power, the attraction and honesty of working with the land. His work was widely admired in the first half of the twentieth century, with writers as diverse as Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, and Henry Miller citing Hamsun's work as being of special importance and influence. Isaac Bashevis Singer, in his essay "Knut Hamsun, Artist of Skepticism" goes so far as to claim that "the whole modern school of fiction in the twentieth century stems from Hamsun." Hamsun's reputation waned rapidly following World War II. Charged with treason for his support of the Norwegian Nazi Party (Nasjonal Samling), his works went out of favor in Norway and elsewhere. As with other writers who supported the Axis powers Ezra Pound, for example Hamsun's work has had a difficult time regaining the prominence it enjoyed before the war.

Marie Hamsun Marie Andersen, born 1881, growed up together with 9 siblings at Elverum / Norway. She worked as a teacher and actress, married 1909 with the 32 jear older poet and later Nobel price winner Knut Hamsun (real name: Knud Pedersen) and had 4 children with him. She began to write in the twenties and had particularly in Germany success until today with the Langerud-children book serial. The first two volumes were also published 1933 and 1934 in the USA in english language. Bibliography:

  • (A Norwegian Farm, 1933)
  • Die Langerudkinder im Winter, 1928 (A Norwegian Family, 1934)
  • Ola Langerud in der Stadt, 1929
  • Die Langerudkinder wachsen heran
  • Regnbuen / Der Regenbogen, 1953/54
  • Die Enkel auf Langerud
  • Under Gullregnen / Die letzten Jahre mit Knut Hamsun, 1959, german 1961
  • in addition 2 poetry volumes were published

It's amazing, that there's not a bit of Marie's political view to find, at least in her childrens books. Below a review of the "Langerudkinder", which are still today available in german bookstores:

Knut Hamsun (1859-1952) was born in Lom, Norway, and grew up in poverty on the Lofoten Islands. At the age of seventeen he became an apprentice to a ropemaker, and at about the same time he began to write. He spent some years in America, travelling and working at odd jobs, and published his impressions, chiefly unfavourable, under the title Fra det moderne Amerikas Aandsliv (1889) [The Intellectual Life of Modern America]. The novel Sult (1890) [Hunger] and even more so Pan (1894) established him as one of the foremost Norwegian writers.
Hamsun's work is determined by a deep aversion to civilization and the belief that man's only fulfilment lies with the soil. This primitivism (and its concomitant distrust of all things modern) found its fullest expression in Hamsun's masterpiece Growth of the Soil ]. His early works usually centre on an outcast, a vagabond figure, aggressively opposed to civilization. In his middle period, Hamsun's aggressiveness gives way to melancholy resignation about the loss of youth. The decay of age is the theme of such plays as Livets Spil (1896) [Game of Life] and (1898) [ Sunset], as well as of the novels

34. Knut Hamsun - Bernd Neumann
Auszug aus dem Roman von knut hamsun.
http://www.bernd-1975.de/lyrik/knuthamsun/victoria-128.htm
Das Ende des Romans: Victoria schreibt an Johannes
Knut Hamsun

Victoria.

Hamsun, Knut,
Hamsun, oil painting by an unknown artist, 1919 By courtesy of the Nobel Foundation, Stockholm pseudonym of KNUT PEDERSEN (b. Aug. 4, 1859, Lom, Nor.d. Feb. 19, 1952, near Grimstad), Norwegian novelist, dramatist, poet, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920. A leader of the Neo-Romantic revolt at the turn of the century, he rescued the novel from a tendency toward excessive naturalism. 10 years, he worked as a casual labourer. Twice he visited the United States, where he worked as a streetcar conductor in Chicago and a farmhand in North Dakota. His first publication was the novel Sult Hunger 1899), the story of a starving young writer in Norway. Sult marked a clear departure from the social realism of the typical Norwegian novel of the period. Its refreshing viewpoint and impulsive, lyrical style had an electrifying effect on European writers. Hamsun followed his first success with a series of lectures attacking such idols as Ibsen and Tolstoy, and he produced a flow of works that continued until his death. Like the asocial heroes of his early works e.g.

Knut Hamsun - biografi

Mer
Hun hadde selv mottatt prisen i 1909.
