Hamsun vokste opp i trange kår. Behovet for å komme seg vekk meldte seg med full tyngde allerede da han var 12-14 år gammel. Etter hvert ble den sosiale oppdriften knyttet sammen med hans behov for å dikte og skrive. Som barn søkte han gjerne ensomheten i skog og mark, drømte og fantaserte seg bort fra det liv han levde. Han fikk også tidlig tilgang til skrifter av ulike slag: aviser, skillingstrykk, kolportasjelitteratur. Tanken på å bli dikter oppstod tidlig. Allerede som 18-åring fikk han utgitt sin første bok. 19 år gammel brøt han opp fra Nord-Norge. Da var han fast bestemt på at det var dikter han skulle bli. MENÚ PRINCIPAL BIOGRAFÍAS Knut Hamsun Knut Hamsun estaba ya maduro para escribir una gran obra. Sus doce años de lucha prolongada con la miseria lo habían preparado para escribir su magnífica novela "Sult" (Hambre), qu~ es, en substancia, y a través de las aventuras de Thomas Glahn, la descripción de sus propias experiencias en Cristianía. Pero Hamsun las describió sin amargura ni rencores, en una forma que demostraba que no sólo había asimilado la experiencia, sino también trascendido sus límites.

    =============== Book One ==============
    ============== Chapter I ============
    THE long, long road over the moors and up into the forest who trod it into being first of all? Man, a human being, the first that came here. There was no path before he came. Afterward, some beast or other, following the faint tracks over marsh and moorland, wearing them deeper; after these again some Lapp gained scent of the path, and took that way from field to field, looking to his reindeer. Thus was made the road through the great Almenning the common tracts without an owner; no-man's-land. The man comes, walking toward the north. He bears a sack, the first sack, carrying food and some few implements. A strong, coarse fellow, with a red iron beard, and little scars on face and hands; sites of old wounds were they gained in toil or fight? Maybe the man has been in prison, and is booking for a place to hide; or a philosopher, maybe, in search of peace. This or that, he comes; the figure of a man in this great solitude. He trudges on; bird and beast are silent all about him; now and again he utters a word or two; speaking to himself.

    Hamsun, Knut 1859-1952, Norwegian novelist. In his youth, virtually without formal education, he led a wandering life, and on his second visit to the United States (1886-88) he worked as a streetcar conductor, lecturer, peddler, clerk, and harvest hand. The theme of the wanderer is prominent in many of his novels, including the naturalistic Hunger (1890, tr. 1899), which aroused a furor of criticism and gained him a large audience. He also wrote the highly regarded Mysteries (1892, tr. 1927), the lyrically beautiful Pan (1894), a trilogy of plays, and a volume of poems (1903). The Growth of the Soil (1917, tr. 1921), sets simple agrarian values against those of the new industrial society. It was awarded the 1920 Nobel Prize in Literature. Hamsun
    Knud Pedersen Hamsund ble født 4. august 1859 i Lom. Det var senere som forfatter han byttet navn til Knut Hamsun. Hamsun vokste opp på Hamarøy i Nordland. Her skal naturen ha fått innvirkning på hans senere diktning. Hamsun begynte tidlig å skrive. Allerede som 18-åring fikk han gitt ut sin første fortelling, "Den gaadefulde". I begynnelsen kunne han ikke leve økonomisk av å være forfatter. Istedet begynte han et omflakkende liv hvor han stadig skiftet arbeid. Han var skomakerlærling, politibetjent, kaiarbeider, veiarbeider og mye mer. Skrive gjorde han hele tiden, men det var først i 1890 med romanen "Sult" han fikk sitt gjennombrudd. Denne romanen stod i sterk kontrast til 80-årenes realisme og vakte en god del oppsikt. Salget gikk likevel ganske dårlig, boken solgte i 1000 eksemplarer. Hamsun dro så en tid til Paris. Her ble han utestengt fra det litterære miljøet p.g.a sin opposisjonelle holdning. Dette gjorde Hamsun svært deprimert og han lengtet mye hjem til Nordland. Han satte seg så ned og skrev "Pan". Den ble utgitt i 1894 og ble en stor suksess, også økonomisk. Etter dette skrev han mange kjente verk, bl.a "Victoria" (1898), "Svermere" (1904) og "Benoni og Rosa" (1908). I 1920 fikk Hamsun nobelprisen i litteratur for "Markens Grøde" (1917).
