These diseases are also of enormous scientific interest because they involve an entirely novel mechanism of biological information transfer: they result from a change in the conformation of an endogenous membrane glycoprotein (PrP C ) which converts it into a pathogenic isoform (PrP Sc ) that is infectious in the complete absence of nucleic acid. My laboratory is interested in understanding prion diseases at the cellular and molecular levels. We are investigating how PrPC is converted into PrPSc, how these two forms are processed and targeted in cells, what other proteins they interact with, and how they cause the clinical and neuropathological abnormalities characteristic of the disease state. To address these issues, we have established experimental systems for de novo generation of PrPSc in the test tube, in cultured cells and in transgenic mice. Our work has also begun to shed light on the normal function of PrPC. We employ a wide range of techniques, including cell labeling, protein chemistry, microscopy, DNA manipulation, transgenesis, neuropathology and animal bioassays.

Harris, better known as David UU (pronounced "double-you") was born in Barrie, Ontario in 1948. He is considered an accomplished concrete and experimental poet and an important small press publisher. Along with bill bissett and bp Nichol, he was a pioneer of the concrete-poetry movement in Canada, and perhaps the first Canadian poet to explore visual collage embodying literary, philosophical and language references. He also wrote and published more conventional poetry, poems and prose for children, two novels, short stories, scripts for theatrical performance and several essays. In addition, Harris founded and operated Fleye Press (1966-67), Derwyddon Press (1972-73), Silver Birch Press (1987-94), and co-founded grOnk in 1967. Harris died in 1994 at a farmhouse near Delhi, Ontario. Scope and Content The David Harris fonds includes manuscripts of his published and unpublished works, as well as handwritten notes in his "Work in Progress" file. Harris encouraged and published a younger generation of experimental writers and the fonds contains extensive correspondence with Canadian writers.
