How is it that an author whose work enjoys a word-of mouth cult status among English teachers, whose rich, uncluttered style earns rave reviews, whose novels and short stories are recommended by knowledgeable booksellers and librarians countrywide, who was named distinguished Minnesotan of the year 2000 how is it this man is not yet famous and his name familiar to the well-read everywhere? Maybe it's because Jon Hassler is a soft-spoken, almost shy fellow with none of the eccentric characteristics that mark our modern icons. Maybe it's because he writes about ordinary lives, often of the middle-aged or elderly, and renders his tales with deft clarity and splendid sympathy, but without the larger-than-life drama we've come to expect. editor Steven Anderson notes that Minnesota's most famous literary luminary, F. Scott Fitzgerald, once said, "American lives have no second acts," and that this observation was certainly true of Fitzgerald's own stories and lives. But Jon Hassler, the most prolific Minnesota writer working today, calls the general truth of that statement into question with his life and work. Hassler's writing is almost exclusively about second acts, second chances. And decidedly American second acts: The characters who people his novels are strong and likeable, but ordinary and oh-so-human. Hassler first published two young-adult novels before beginning what he calls his "serious" writing. "I think I always intended to do it [write serious novels], but it was something easy to put off as I was earning a living and raising a family. Maybe it was because I sensed the sort of commitment it would take. Once I began I've been working hard at it and have published 10 novels since then." His first novel, the soulful

The Staggerford Flood jon hassler. Let me preface this by saying that jon hassleris my favorite author. And let me add this other tidbit jon hassler is dying.
http://gurno.com/adam/reviews/2002sep.shtml
September 2002 Book Reveiws American Gods The Staggerford Flood American Gods
Neil Gaiman This is a very well written, challenging, dark sci-fi novel. It's probably the best book that I haven't been able to finish. It just got too 'dark' for me - too much chaos, too much malignancy in the world that Neil has built here. Which, I suppose, could be something of a complement to the writing. It's a book about a man name "Shadow" who loses everything just as he is released from prison. With no other options, he agree to work with an old man who has been doggedly pursuing him since he got out. The old man and his cronies are... more (and less) than they seem. Even though I never finished it, I would recommend that you read Small Gods by Terry Pratchett before reading this one - one of Pratchett's best, I think, and it has a similar theme. (Terry's is handled with a comedic bent, however) The Staggerford Flood
Jon Hassler Let me preface this by saying that Jon Hassler is my favorite author. I have read every single word that he has put into print. I've even read the 'young adult' books that he's written, just for kicks. And let me add this other tidbit: Jon Hassler is dying. He has advanced Parkinson's. He can no longer write. He cannot even sign his name.

Jon Hassler Writes Again
Well, Jon Hassler hasn't written to us, but he has written a new book.
Dick Jenson retired several years ago. Luckily that hasn't kept him from reading.
He wrote recently in hopes of renewing his "subscription."
No problem, Dick. You're on the list. Here's what Dick wrote: "The book I have just finished reading is Jon Hassler's latest: The Staggerford Flood.
He remains in my estimation at the top of the list of Minnesota novelists. He may not be as widely
read as Sinclair Lewis or Scott Fitzgerald, but his acute description of small-town, rural living is much
more inclusive and comprehensive than Lewis'. And Fitzgerald didn't actually deal with this major
aspect of Minnesota life in his fiction. For me, there is nothing in Lewis' work that has the focused
intensity of The Love Hunter or the polished craftsmanship of Grand Opening "One of Hassler's most endearing characters, Agatha McGee, returns in The Staggerford Flood
She ends up housing several refugees from the over-flowing Badbattle River. Agatha enjoys the pajama-party atmosphere in her ample home. Hassler populates the group with a variety of amusing, refreshing characters, including some from previous novels. "The major crux of the plot involves Agatha devising an ingenious false identity for a deceased postmaster of an adjoining town, thus maintaining the post office operations and helping the remaining businesses keep operating.

He fills them with surprising moments of grace, humor, and generosity. "I've been told that I make good people interesting," Hassler says of his work. He does. A former small-town high school teacher and college English professor, Hassler writes of teachers and students, small towns and faculty lounges with some authority.

Academic Novels Selective Bibliography by Mark Allan , Head, Reference Department Porter Henderson Library Angelo State University Last Substantially Updated October 26, 2001. The purpose of this page is to provide all interested with a reading list of "academic novels" or "university fiction." For purposes of this page the phrase "academic novels" is defined as those novels focused primarily upon the life, politics, and relationships of faculty and staff in an academic setting, but may also tangentially encompass that of students'. (In a couple of cases I have broken this rule and included novels focusing upon students' experiences in order to shoehorn-in a couple of novels of possible interest.) Notably, I have NOT included many items that might also be counted in the "Mystery" genre, as there are many books in this genre whose relationship to academia is but secondary. The list below is by no means comprehensive, but should be regarded as a starting point. Literary Criticism of the Genre: Womack, Kenneth. (2002).

Words about Books
Book Reviews Recommending good books is almost as much fun as reading them. It lets us all be a critic, or at least share what we think is “a good read.” Jon Hassler ’55 is going to do just that. The award-winning author kicked off the BCLL book reviews with his commentary on By the Lake by John McGahern. Jon’s reviews will be posted periodically on the BCLL web page. We’ll also have recommended reading from the CSB/SJU academic departments so you may know the books that are favored by our faculty. Latest Jon Hassler book review; Feb. 2003: LOCAL WONDERS: SEASONS IN BOHEMIAN ALPS,
By Ted Kooser, University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, Nebraska
153 pages Not since Dylan Thomas, in my opinion, has a poet created such a delightful work of prose as Ted Kooser has done in this book about the southeastern corner of Nebraska where he lives. Here, for example, are three sentences from his preface: Contrary to what out-of-state tourists might tell you, Nebraska is not flat but slanted, like a long church-basement table with the legs at one end not perfectly snapped into place, not quite enough of a slant for the tuna-and-potato-chip casseroles to slide off into the Missouri River. The high end is closest to the Rockies, and the entire state is made up of gravel, sand and silt that ran off the front range over millions of years. Across this plain the Platte River meanders side to side, like a man who has lost a hubcap and is looking for it in the high grass on both sides of the road.

It will emphasize basic conceptual and theoretical perspectives on aging within a multidisciplinary framework, and utilize readings, personal experiences, and guest lectures by professionals in the field of gerontology. This course is intended for the gerontology practitioner as well as those exploring the field as a possible career choice. Student Responsibilities: Certain principles guide behavior in the academic community, no matter what the course is that you are taking. First of all, a personal integrity is critical. That means taking responsibility for one's thoughts and words, attending class, taking initiative to catch up with classmates' notes when absent, treating classmates and instructor with respect. Second, each student needs to demonstrate a code of conduct that avoids cheating and plagiarism; standards for these actions are established in the Augustana College Catalog and Student Handbook. If you have any questions or concerns, I expect that you will also take the initiative to seek me out during office hours; I will be more than happy to be of assistance.
