Later Life and Mature Work
The Scarlet Letter (1850). Set in 17th-century Puritan New England, the novel delves deeply into the human heart, presenting the problems of moral evil and guilt through allegory and symbolism. It is often considered the first American psychological novel. Hawthorne's next novel, The House of the Seven Gables (1851), takes place in the New England of his own period but nevertheless also deals with the effects of Puritanism. A Wonder Book (1852), based on Greek mythology, which became a juvenile classic, and Tanglewood Tales (1853), also for children. At this time he befriended his neighbor Herman Melville , who was one of the first to appreciate Hawthorne's genius. Returning to Concord, Hawthorne completed The Blithedale Romance (1852), a novel based on his Brook Farm experience.

Hawthorne, Nathaniel Rappaccini's Daughter
On-Line Text Genre Short Story (34 pp.) Keywords Medical Ethics Medical Research Science Science Fiction Summary Set in Padua "very long ago," this is the story of a "mad scientist" working in isolation on a completely unethical (at least by modern research standards) experiment involving poisonous plants. A young student of medicine observes from his quarters the scientist's beautiful daughter who is confined to the lush and locked gardens in which the experiment is taking place. Having fallen in love with the lovely Beatrice, Giovanni ignores the warning of his mentor, Professor Baglioni, that Rappaccini is up to no good and he and his work should be shunned. Eventually, Giovanni sneaks into the forbidden garden to meet his lover, and begins to suffer the consequences of encounter with the plantsand with Beatrice, who dwells among them and has been rendered both immune to their effects and poisonous to others. Commentary This tale joins others by Hawthorne in exploring research gone amok, rendered dangerous and unethical by virtue of the personal motives of the physician-scientist, his self-imposed isolation from his peers, and the unmonitored nature and progress of his project which inevitably results in death of at least one innocent other. The experiment occurs in the shadow of the great medical school at Padua, the ethos of which is presumably represented by the suspicions of Baglioni that his old colleague Rappaccini is doing bad things.

Novelist and short story writer, a central figure in the American Renaissance. Hawthorne's best-known works include THE SCARLET LETTER (1850) and THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES (1851). Writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Herman Melville, and Hawthorne looked not only to the Puritan origins of American history, but also to Puritan styles of rhetoric to create a distinctive American literary voice.
