Rhapsody: Child of Blood
Rhapsody is a woman, a Singer of some talent, who is swept up into events of world-shattering import. On the run from an old romantic interest who won't take no for an answer, Rhapsody literally bumps into a couple of shady characters: half-breeds who come to her rescue in the nick of time. Only the rescue turns into an abduction, and Rhapsody soon finds herself dragged along on an epic voyage, one that spans centuries and ranges across a wonder-filled fantasy world.
Purchase this book at: Amazon.com or at Prophecy: Child of Earth
Prophecy continues the stories of Rhapsody, the Namer who uses song, herb-lore, and affinities with fire and starlight to heal and protect, and her adoptive family: Achmed the Snake, an obnoxious former assassin and King of the savage Firbolg race, and Grunthor, his huge, cheerfully cannibalistic sidekick. Rhapsody travels in the company of the mysterious Ashe, who becomes much less mysterious as the story progresses. She meets a dragon, trains with a Lirin swordmistress who once carried Rhapsody's fiery sword, Daystar Clarion, and races to prevent the assassination of the Patriarch of Sepulvarta. Meanwhile, Achmed and Grunthor discover secrets of their mountain stronghold and learn more of their own powers. Together they repel renewed attacks by the F'dor, a demon seeking apocalyptic destruction. But they have not yet identified the demon's host or disarmed all of its agents, and time is running out.

Prophecy by Elizabeth Haydon
Conclusion: Well Written, but Poorly Conceived I kind of liked Rhapsody, the first book in this series, but Prophecy really fell flat for me. The things I didn't like in Rhapsody's character just completely took over in this book, and the overall plotting was fairly weak, I thought. A quick summary: Again, Rhapsody is the perfect woman - stunningly beautiful, highly moral, exceptionally brave, etc. She charges headlong into conflict and emerges victorious. Etc, etc. In this volume, Haydon apparently thinks Rhapsody lacks enough superpowers so Hayden has her go around collecting even more powerful stuff to go along with her magical flaming sword, receive additional superhero training, and get extended history lectures from various wise folk around the continent. And one Really Big Secret is revealed, but it was so poorly a kept secret that I already guessed it in the first book. On the plus side, this book is well written and the characters very distinct and well drawn. I guess most people loved this book because the reviews I glanced at on Amazon were almost uniformly glowing. So I appear to be in the minority here. %A Haydon, Elizabeth %T Prophecy %I Tor %D 2000-07 %G ISBN 0-312-86751-4 %P 480 pp. %O hardcover, US$27.95

Conclusion: Recommended I figure that any book as heavily promoted as this one has to at least be decent, so I sprung for Rhapsody in hardcover. And when I first started reading it, I was ready to declare it a masterpiece. But a strange thing happened as I continued on. My opinion of the book sank and sank. I think I've figured out why that is: Rhapsody is a book written to appeal primarily to females. Rhapsody is a young former prostitute now making her way in life as a Singer. When a former, er, patron of hers wants another twirl, she refuses. As she's running away, she falls in with a couple of strangers who are on the run themselves. They flee to an enhanted forest, enter a system of caverns under the earth, walk half way around the world, and emerge 1400 years later. Good stuff abounds here. The writing is strong. The characters are memorable. The world is interesting in the way high fantasy worlds should be. The story is thankfully lacking in cliches. Bits of wit and humor are sprinkled about. I don't know why I'm down on the character of Rhapsody so much. Broadly similar charcters in other books - such as Marie-Josephe in Vonda N. McIntyre's The Moon and the Sun - didn't affect me in the same way. Perhaps that's because stories where I've encountered the type before were romances rather than adventures. Or maybe I was just in a foul mood this week.

When I first read the opening pages of this book, I was a little wary, the name Meridon and and an instrument known as the Time Editor just seemed a little hokey to me.  Boy was I wrong.  This is one of the best fantasy novels I have read this year and probably, ever.
There are many of the conventions that are common to fantasy novels: Magic, Ogre-like beings (Firbolgs),  Evil Being, etc.  While these are common in the landscape of fantasy, Haydon's approach to each of these is her own.  The world building is good as well, we have a good sense of the world in which these characters live, from the magical Sagia tree to the home of the Firbolg.  Haydon's rich descriptions are not TOO descriptive as the reader still has the leeway to leave some of the world to their own imagination.  The system of Magic is handled very well and looks to be well thought out.  The Magic System in this world is set to vibrational fields that can be manipulated by singing to and matching particular vibrations.  For Example:  If a Singer were to come across a plant that was wilting away, he/she could begin singing and attune to the life frequency of the plant to help heal it.

Rhapsody
by Elizabeth Haydon, 1999
Review by Eva Wojcik-Obert Exclusive Check out Eva's interview with Ms. Haydon, a review of Prophecy , as well as our exclusive excerpt and early review of Destiny Elizabeth Haydon's Rhapsody is the first volume of a trilogy which I sincerely hope lives up to my expectations to only get better as it unfolds. Now for all you gender-conscious readers this book is a treat for anyone who thinks a woman can be strong in heart, mind, and body without having to become a male clone. The central character, Rhapsody, is a young human/Lirin female whose first romantic encounter is manipulated into occurring by Meridion, whose presence at the beginning and end of volume one raises serious questions about "editors" in the universal sense. Now the gender-interesting thing which Haydon contrives to accomplish is establishing a balance between masculine and feminine characters, traits, and issues. This sets Rhapsody apart from many other fantasy epics that also excel at plot execution, intriguing other-worlds creation, magical/supernatural manifestations. Haydon does all those things and does them well. Her action sequences are presented with extreme clarity and vividness. She handles action so well that I wish she'd give us more action as an effective foil to all the background foundation-setting storytelling embedded in the book. Be forewarned, I suspect this is a trilogy which will require reading volume one for maximum enjoyment of succeeding volumes. Haydon sets a lot in place in

Destiny: Child of the Sky
by Elizabeth Haydon, 2001
Review by Eva Wojcik-Obert How often do you finish a book that has an ending that prompts you to think about the entire story for longer than sixty seconds after you’ve closed the book? Much too often the last page we read is our last engagement with a text whose plot reaches the end of the line like a train pulling into a station in the wee hours of the morning with a cargo of groggy passengers. Elizabeth Haydon’s Destiny: Child of the Sky completes the fantasy trilogy of Rhapsody and Prophecy and its conclusion will indeed cause you to rethink the import of the events and themes of the entire trilogy. My love of surprise prohibits me from tossing any outright plot spoilers posing as teasers that could ruin your reading experience. But I’m sure that at least one of the usual plot synopses that are generally passed off as reviews will spoil someone’s reading enjoyment; I dare them to not do so. Since I’ve already mentioned Meridion in reviews of

August 2001; $27.95US; 0-312-86750-6 also available in August, Prophecy , now in paperback. AUTHOR EXCERPT ORDERING First there was Rhapsody , which Publishers Weekly , in a starred review, called "one of the finest high fantasy debuts in years." Then came Prophecy , of which the Romantic Times said, "Fans eagerly anticipating the second book from Elizabeth Haydon elevates craftsmanship to a new level of excellence as she deftly weaves mythology and fantasy, catching our hearts with the extroadinary power and intensity of both characters and concepts. This series already has 'landmark' written all over it." (41/2 Star, Gold Medal Review) Here is Destiny , the triumphant conclusion to the Rhapsody Trilogy. In Rhapsody , a fellowship was forged, three companions who triumphed over great adversity: Rhapsody, a singer of great talent and beauty; Achmed, an assassin with unearthly talents; and Grunthor, a giant of jolly disposition and deadly skill with weapons. Having fled the F'dor an ancient, powerful evil the three emerged on the other side of the world, only to discover that fourteen centuries had passed. Their homeland had been destroyed, their people scattered across several continents, and everyone they had ever known had long since passed . . . except, perhaps, the F'dor. Prophecy continued this powerful epic. Driven by a vision, Rhapsody rescued the religious leader of her new homeland while Achmed and Grunthor sought evidence of the F'dor. The three learned they might be their world's only hope, heroes spoken of in the Prophecy of the Three, but time was running short. They had to find their elusive enemy before his darkness consumed them all.

Interview by Ciara Grey
Fiction Factor - Do you have a literary agent to represent you?
Elizabeth Haydon - Yes. My agent is Richard Curtis.
FF - Would you recommend that new authors try to find an agent first or approach the publishers directly.
EH - I tend to recommend the agent route, because an agent can give you advice about what needs to be fixed before an editor sees it. Also there are a lot of editors in genre fiction who only rarely even look at stuff that comes in over the transom. But if you can't find one to take you on at first, cultivate an editor and go directly to him/her. Once you're published, it's easier to find an agent to agree to represent you in future sales.
FF - What precautions should an author take when signing a contract with an agent and/or publisher?
EH - Agents should never charge a reading fee, and if they are members of the AAR (Association of Authors Representatives) they should follow accepted practices with their contracts. Don't get into a situation where your agent is charging you "editing" fees, and make sure that you have a time limit on the prospective part of your relationship. Ideally it should contain a clause that says, for example, if the agent has not procured a sale for you within one year's time, the agreement is void.
