The Selected Writings of William Hazlitt
The Pickering Masters 9 Volume Set Editor: Duncan Wu
Consulting Editors: David Bromwich, Stanley Jones, Roy Park and Tom Paulin - With an introduction by Tom Paulin. While acknowledging the scope of PP Howe's Centenary Edition of Hazlitt's complete works, Duncan Wu is swift to demonstrate the difference in his approach and use of copy texts. Howe took as copy text a set by Waller and Glover published 1902-6, thus perpetuating the minor errors and editorial ideosyncracies of the earlier edition.
Duncan Wu, Introduction to the edition The new edition takes all copy texts from early printed sources, collated with lifetime editions and manuscripts. We do not claim to supersede Howe, but wish to complement, and supplement, him. The new edition thus succeeds in its aim of providing today's Hazlitt scholars with a selection of highly accurate resource texts, further enhanced by editorial matter from eminent academics. The set is fit to stand alone as a primary resource in any library which does not have an older Hazlitt edition, and also has a place beside Howe as an authoritative, up-to-date collection, indispensable to modern research.

To be struck with incongruity in whatever comes before us, does not argue great comprehension or refinement of perception, but rather a looseness and flippancy of mind and temper, which prevents the individual from connecting any two ideas steadily or consistently together.

Characters of Shakespeare's Plays by William Hazlitt
William Hazlitt William Hazlitt (1778-1830) is one of the great masters of English prose style. He is a major literary critic and radical polemicist whose intellect is both analytical and sensuously particular. Keats worshipped him, and his poems and letters are shaped by Hazlitt's influence - his sentences are like a 'whale's back in the sea of prose,' Keats commented. He was born in Maidstone, Kent, the son of an Irish Unitarian minister. His mother, Grace Loftus, was from an English dissenting family who were friendly with Godwin's family, so Hazlitt's writings draw strongly on the culture of radical dissent in Britain and Ireland.

    William Hazlitt
    Profile
Essayist and critic; born at Maidstone the son of a minister and spent several years of his early life with his parents in America. A few months after their return to England in 1787 his father was appointed minister of the chapel in Noble Street, Wem , in Shropshire and William spent the rest of his childhood and youth here. His home, now called Hazlitt House, still stands in Noble Street as a private dwelling. He was educated at private schools and often accompanied his mother and sister to gatherings of ladies in and around Wem, part of the social and pastoral work expected of a minister's family. William was a great admirer of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and when the poet, about to become a minister himself, preached a probationary sermon at the Unitarian Church in Shrewsbury he walked all the way there in freezing weather to hear him. Hazlitt was bitterly disappointed when Coleridge received an annuity from Josiah Wedgwood, which enabled him to pursue a literary career, for this allowed him to leave Shrewsbury and prevented Hazlitt from making what he had hoped would be a close friendship. Hazlitt at this time was around nineteen years of age and of course, embarking on a literary career himself, was soon to become a friend of the Romantic poets. Among his own best works are Characters of Shakespeare's plays Lectures on the English poets (1818-19) and The spirit of the age From An Illustrated Literary Guide to Shropshire

The spirit of the age
    by William Hazlitt
    Introduction
Published in 1825, The spirit of the age is a collection of portraitscelebratory and criticalof Hazlitt's contemporaries. Some are of personal friends or those whom Hazlitt particularly admired (Byron, Wordsworth, Coleridge), while others are less flattering. Of Sir Walter Scott, Hazlitt says The cells of his memory are vast, various, full even to bursting with life and motion; his speculative understanding is empty, flaccid, poor, and dead. and of Robert Southey His inquiries are partial and hasty, his conclusions raw and unconcocted, and with a considerable infusion of whim and humour and a monkish spleen. Besides poets and authors Hazlitt portrays politicians and journalists, preachers and philosophers. Some are still well-known, while others have lapsed into obscurity. They are delineated with a waspish wit, their arguments demolished, their literary style criticised. Some are summed up and dismissed with one devastating sentence. Mr. Bentham, perhaps, over-rates the importance of his own theories.

Remarks . By william hazlitt. Embellished with Seven Ornamented Portraits,After a Design by T. Stothard, RA London Published by Wm.
    http://www.orgs.muohio.edu/anthologies/haz1.htm
This web page contains my notes from examining Hazlitt's anthology at the British Library, an 1824 edition. This edition was suppressed according to Hazlitt's biographer because the booksellers were afraid that publishing a collection of poetry containing contemporary, living poets might decrease the sales of those poets' volumes. Thus, living poets were removed from the later 1825 edition that was actually published; you can see my notes to that edition as well by clicking on it. My notes, available on these two web pages, include the table of contents of each edition.
11601.i.13 [A handwritten card in front says, "This Editionwhich contains the Living Poets was suppressed and the work was published next year, 1825, with the Poets down to Cowper only. [vol?] is very rare." The note is not quite accurate, since the published 1825 edition does also contain Burns , as does this unpublished volume.] [Same picture (see ) facing the title page; no half-title] Select British Poets, or New Elegant Extracts from Chaucer to the Present Time, With Critical Remarks .
