Frozen Jews
Avrom Sutzkever July 10, 1944
Have you seen, in fields of snow, frozen Jews, row on row? Blue marble forms lying, not breathing, not dying. Somewhere a flicker of a frozen soul - glint of fish in an icy swell. All brood. Speech and silence are one. Night snow encases the sun. A smile glows immobile from a rose lip's chill. Baby and mother, side by side. Odd that her nipple's dried.
Fist, fixed in ice, of a naked old man: the power's undone in his hand. I've sampled death in all guises. Nothing surprises. Yet a frost in July in this heat - a crazy assault in the street. I and blue carrion, face to face. Frozen Jews in a snowy space. Marble shrouds my skin. Words ebb. Light grows thin. I'm frozen, I'm rooted in place like the naked old man enfeebled by ice.
Holocaust by Barbara Sonek We played, we laughed we were loved.

English 203: Major Themes in Literature II An Online Symposium Group Three says . . .
Group Three: Kari Christoferson, Marty Church, Stephanie Klein, Lacey Mentink, Kristina Roberts, Christy Thomas, and Manuel Pacillas. Although there is not a common theme of love and the feelings associated with love among the poems read for this unit, the more important factor is the idea that poetry is open to interpretation. Poetry, and these poems are no exception, plays off the audience's background knowledge and the perceptions they aquire as they read the poem. In the following portion of our essay, it will be evident that different people see poems as having different meanings and portrayals. "Love is Not All: It Is Not Meat nor Drink" by Edna St. Vincent Millay is a poem written shortly after an intimate moment shared between lovers. As one ponders why love is so wondrous the conclusion is drawn that it should not be as revered as it is. The poem illustrates how love does not provide for our basic needs such as clothing, food, or shelter, and yet it is the cause of many troubles. This poem examines how, although love does not provide for us physically, it is an essential part of human life. The poem drives home the idea that relationship is so vital to survival that the narrator would not trade an intimate night of love for a more physical need to be met. Another group member points out: Love isn't everything. You can't eat it, drink it, breathe it, or use it for shelter; but people still are willing to die for (and because of) it. Even though love is not essential to live, love is essential to die in comfort and peace.

ANSWERS
Who am I?
PLEASE NOTE that there are a few people that scored on just about everything. There are two almost perfect scores.
  • I commercially recorded the Mozart Horn Concerti no less than three times. Recording effort number 1 by far got the best critical acclaim and the lowest overall sales because it was recorded for a private music club and thus, had far less distribution. Who am I and, what famous "record club" recorded my first recording of the Mozart Concertos? (Two Points Possible) Alan Civil - World Record Club (Collaboration with EMI) Aside: The only recording in existence of Dennis Brain conducted live by Arturo Toscannini was also originally released by the World Record Club. Judith Rowan-1
    Hans Pizka-1
    Adam Baker-1
    Howard Gilbert-1
    Guy Johnson-2
    Anthony Morris-2
  • We all know that it is possible to encode alphabetic messages in music as was done with a famous composition dedicated to Aubrey Brain. What is the name of the composition which has the name "AuBrEy BrAin" encoded into a theme?
