LIEUTENANT HENRY O. FLIPPER
Henry O.Flipper was West Point's First Black Graduate and America's First Black Officer. He was stationed at Fort Elliott, Texas in 1879. Henry Ossian Flipper was born a slave on March 21, 1856, in Thomasville, Georgia. He began his education in a woodshed where an old slave taught him the alphabet. After the Civil War, his father, a skilled shoemaker and carriage trimmer, prospered and hired the wife of a former Confederate captain to tutor Henry and his other three sons. In the fall of 1872, Henry learned about a vacancy at the West Point Military Academy. After passing the qualifying examination, Flipper received his appointment on May 25, 1873. Flipper became the first black graduate from West Point on June 14, 1877, after enduring four years of loneliness and isolation among the predominantly white cadets who, from time to time, harassed and mistreated him. When Flipper was handed his diploma, he received a standing ovation from his classmates and the spectators for his four years of dedication and courage. Major General John Schofield, West Point's Superintendent, gave a tribute to Flipper's bravery against isolation and exclusion by his classmates. He stated, "No white cadet had ever been burdened with the hope of an entire race on his shoulders. Anyone knows how quietly and bravely this young manthe first of his despised race to graduate from West Pointhas borne the difficulties of his position; how for four years he has had to stand apart from his classmates as one with them but not of them... ." Henry O. Flipper became the first black officer in the United States Military Service.

Henry O. Flipper Military Officer, Author, Engineer
Henry O. Flipper was an army officer, translator, writer, and engineer who broke racial barriers by becoming the first African-American to graduate from West Point and lead an army division. After a racially motivated dishonorable discharge from the army, Flipper devoted his life to clearing his name.
Henry Flipper was born into slavery on March 21, 1856 in Thomasville, Georgia. After the Civil War, the family moved to Atlanta where Henry's father, a shoemaker and carriage trimmer, paid for private tutoring for his son. Flipper attended schools established by the American Missionary Association, including Atlanta University in 1869. In 1873, he entered West Point: the fifth African-American to do so. His experiences were chronicled in several major newspapers at the time. In 1878, he became the first African-American to graduate from West Point. Although he was ostracized because of his race, Flipper focused on his positive experiences in his book: The Colored Cadet at West Point Flipper then became the first African-American officer in the U.S. army; he worked with the Buffalo Soldiers, an African-American cavalry regiment. As post engineer, he drained stagnant pools that had bred malaria. He succeeded in this job where others had failed, and in 1977, "Flipper's Ditch" as it came to be known, was named a National Historic Landmark.

" It is time...to sound the trumpet call of artistic resurrection. Some of Tanner's later works evolve such beauty...that when more of them are assembled the art world will rediscover one of the great, but neglected, American artists."author Marcia M. Mathews, prophetically , in Henry Tanner American Artist (1969). Henry O. Tanner S omewhere underneath his artist's sensitivity and quiet nature, Henry O. Tanner must have possessed a powerful determination that was largely reflected in the passion of his renowned religious paintings. For as a black man with light skin, he endured taunting by other African Americans for having white friends and "white" ambitions. And yet, while students at the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts expressed their intolerance of a black artist in their midst by once throwing Tanner into the street, tied to his easel. Finding such treatment intolerable, he spent most of his professional life in France, particularly Paris. But as the first African American artist to win international acclaim, Tanner became a source of inspiration for many younger black painters in the United States. A number of his dramatic-yet-restrained biblical works, stemming from his deep religious convictions, won awards at prestigious juried competitions in the late 1890's. And Tanner's career soared after the French government purchased his

FLIPPER, HENRY OSSIAN (1856-1940). Henry Ossian Flipper, engineer, the first black graduate of West Point, the eldest of five sons of Festus and Isabella Flipper, was born a slave at Thomasville, Georgia, on March 21, 1856. He attended school at the American Missionary Association, and in 1873, as a freshman at Atlanta University, he was appointed to the United States Military Academy. Although Flipper was the fifth black accepted to West Point, he was the first to graduate. At West Point he was often ostracized and had little social interaction with white cadets beyond official activities. He graduated fiftieth in a class of seventy-six on June 14, 1877, and accepted a commission as a second lieutenant. Flipper described his successful struggle against ostracism and prejudice in The Colored Cadet at West Point (1878). In January 1878 he was assigned to Company A of the Tenth United States Cavalry. qv As an officer in the Tenth Cavalry, Flipper served at forts Elliott, Concho, Quitman, and Davis, Texas, and at Fort Sill, Indian Territory. He first reached Texas on his way to Fort Sill, where he supervised the drainage of malarial ponds. Flipper's Ditch is now a national historic landmark. He later constructed a road from Gainesville to Fort Sill after a troop of the Fourth United States Cavalry qv got drunk and deserted the lieutenant assigned to do the job. Flipper also installed a telegraph line from Fort Elliott to Fort Supply, Indian Territory, scouted on the Llano Estacado
