FORT DAVIS NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
SECOND LIEUTENANT
HENRY O. FLIPPER
FIRST BLACK GRADUATE
OF WEST POINT
On February 19, 1999, President Bill Clinton posthumously pardoned Second Lieutenant Henry Ossian Flipper. The event came 59 years after his death and 117 years after the young lieutenant had been found guilty of the charge of "conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman." A short statement penned by President Chester Arthur in June of 1882, upholding the sentence of the court that Flipper be dismissed from the army, had signaled the end to one of the most envied of military careers. At age 21, Flipper had become the first black graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. His assignment in July 1877 to the Tenth U.S. Cavalry, one of two black cavalry regiments organized after the Civil War, was the realization of a personal dream. Flipper's military career was cut short, however, when he was court-martialed for embezzlement of commissary funds, for falsifying government records, and for lying to his commander. At Fort Davis, Texas, in a trial shrouded in prejudice, Lieutenant Flipper, while not convicted of the embezzlement charge, was found guilty of being dishonest and was sentenced "to be dismissed from the service of the United States." Early Schooling Born into slavery at Thomasville, Georgia on March 21, 1856, Henry’s education began when he was eight years old in the wood shop of another slave.

Flipper also authored two books of law, Mexico Laws, Statutes (1892) and Venezuela Laws, Statutes (1925.) Throughout his adult life, Flipper tried to clear his name from the court-martial and efforts continued after his death. Finally, in 1976 the Army exonerated Flipper and awarded him an honorable discharge. This small collection on Henry O. Flipper is primarily comprised of materials gathered in the planning for a commemorative ceremony honoring Flipper and recognizing his exoneration. The ceremony was sponsored jointly by Atlanta University and the Atlanta Branch of the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. The most significant item in this collection is a typed manuscript entitled "Biographical Sketches". This typescript is the memoir published in Negro Frontiersman: The Western Memoirs of Henry O. Henry O. Tanner, America's premier expatriate African American artist at the turn of the century, made his first trip to North Africa in 1908. His travels inspired what are considered his Orientalist works as well as some of his most eloquent biblical scenes. Gate at Tangier is one of Tanner's many iterations of the shadowy archways connecting the streets and passages of Tangier, through which heavily draped figures pursue their daily activities. Tanner's sensitive treatment of North African subject matter is a marked departure from the exoticized view of the East that was the foundation of European Orientalist tradition. A. L. C. TOP

A Much Larger Significance Value can be place on anything from such trivial things as a kiss, to monumental occasions such as the birth of a child. These are what truly have value, not extravagant houses nor luxury sport cars. Just as the a fore mentioned events can have a value put on them, so can art. This leads me to the incredible work of one Henry Ossawa Tanner. Actually, it leads me more to one of his more elaborate paintings, The
Banjo Lesson . This painting can be valued in three very distinct ways. The first of which would be formalism. Meaning the painting is truly beautiful. The magnificence of his work can be seen with each subtle brush stroke, each carefully crafted detail. His painting is truly beautiful, therefore it perfectly falls under the category of formalism. Yet, The Banjo Lesson has more than one specific worth. Which would only seem logical since Henry Osswa Tanners' skill is truly remarkable. Expressivism, being the second type of "value" that can be place on The Banjo Lesson . Due to great deal of emotion Henry Ossawa Tanner clearly put into this painting, it is easy to see why it would make strong emotions stir up inside of anyone who is blessed enough to behold the great grandeur which is

Henry O'Reilly
O'REILLY, Henry, journalist, born in Carrickmacross, Ireland, 6 February, 1806; died in Rochester, New York, 17 August, 1886. He came to this country with his father in 1816, and learned the printer's trade in New York. In 1826 he went to Rochester, New York. and there established the "Advertiser," the first daily newspaper that was published west of Albany, which he edited for four years. It was notable for its opposition to Thurlow Weed. After the invention of the telegraph Mr. O'Reilly entered upon the work of extending the lines to the west, but became involved in lawsuits which almost ruined him financially. He had also been prominent in advocating the enlargement of the Erie canal and improvement of the public-school system. In 18 he was postmaster of Rochester, and subsequently he was connected with various journals. He published "Sketches of Rochester, with Notices of Western New York" (Rochester, 1838)and "American Political Anti-Masonry " (New York, 1879).

THE GIFT OF THE MAGI
by O. Henry
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty- seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating. While the mistress of the home is gradually subsiding from the first stage to the second, take a look at the home. A furnished flat at $8 per week. It did not exactly beggar description, but it certainly had that word on the lookout for the mendicancy squad. In the vestibule below was a letter-box into which no letter would go, and an electric button from which no mortal finger could coax a ring. Also appertaining thereunto was a card bearing the name "Mr. James Dillingham Young." The "Dillingham" had been flung to the breeze during a former period of prosperity when its possessor was being paid $30 per week. Now, when the income was shrunk to $20, though, they were thinking seriously of contracting to a modest and unassuming D. But whenever Mr. James Dillingham Young came home and reached his flat above he was called "Jim" and greatly hugged by Mrs. James Dillingham Young, already introduced to you as Della. Which is all very good.

O. Henry
Prolific American short-story writer, a master of surprise endings, who wrote about the life of ordinary people in New York City. Typical for O. Henry's stories is a twist of plot which turns on an ironic or coincidental circumstance. Although some critics were not so enthusiastic about his work, the public loved it.
William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) was born in Greenboro, North Carolina. His father, Algernon Sidney Porter, was a physician. When William was three, his mother died, and he was raised by his parental grandmother and paternal aunt. William was an avid reader, but at the age of fifteen he left school, and then worked in a drug store and on a Texas ranch. He continued to Houston, where he had a number of jobs, including that of bank clerk. After moving to Austin, Texas, in 1882, he married.
In 1884 Porter started a humorous weekly The Rolling Stone. It was at this time that he began heavy drinking. When the weekly failed, he joined the Houston Post as a reporter and columnist. In 1894 cash was found to have gone missing from the bank and O. Henry fled to Honduras. He returned to Austin the next year because his wife was dying. In 1897 he was convicted of embezzling money, although there has been much debate over his actual guilt. In 1898 he entered a penitentiary at Columbus, Ohio.
