Henry O. Flipper Paved Way for Integration of Military By Arminta C. Garner, Jesus Saenz and Myriam Y. Frias. Henry Ossian Flipper has risen, fallen and risen again in our nation's history. On February 19, 1999, President Bill Clinton posthumously pardoned Flipper , the first black West Point graduate, for a conviction on trumped-up charges that netted him a dishonorable discharge.
Born in Thomasville, Georgia, as a slave on March 31, 1856, Flipper was the oldest son of five boys born to Isabella Bucknere and Festus Flipper. Like Henry, his brothers would become professional men, including an ordained bishop, a wealthy farmer, a professor and a physician.
Henry learned to read at eight from a slave named Ponder, who taught him in his woodshop at night. Flipper received his appointment to West Point while he was a student at Atlanta University. In 1873, Flipper began his education at the military academy, one of few black cadets.
Enduring racial slurs and discrimination from other cadets, Flipper studied civil engineering and Spanish, two subjects that would serve him well in the Southwest later in life. Graduating in 1877, Lt. Flipper distinguished him self as the first black graduate of West Point, ranking 50th of the 76 cadets in the class.

Henry O. Flipper This date marks the birth of Henry Ossian Flipper. He was an African-American military pioneer officer. Flipper was the first Black man to graduate from West Point.
He came from a family of slaves, born in Thomasville, GA. When the Civil War broke out his owner moved his property to Atlanta. Young Flippers intelligence was noticed while attending schools funded by the American Missionary Association. James Freeman of the Georgia House of Representatives recognized this and appointed Flipper to West Point, where he arrived in 1873. The daunting task of life alone as the only Black cadet began after his Black roommate was discharged.
Flipper concentrated on his studies, learned Spanish, majored in civil engineering, graduating 15th in a class of twenty six on June 15th 1877. Three years later lieutenant Henry Ossian Flipper was posted at Fort Davis, Oklahoma. Less than a year into duty he was accused of embezzlement, a charge that was made up because he had asserted his social equality. A Court Marshall followed and he was cleared. Moving on, Flipper remained in the southwest, validating Spanish and Mexican land grants and translating the mining laws of Mexico into English.
After the Spanish American War he worked for the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Henry Flipper retired to Atlanta and died in 1940.

    William S. Porter
    "O. Henry" (1862-1910)
Born William Sidney Porter, this master of short stories is much better known under his pen name "O. Henry." He was born September 11, 1862 in North Carolina, where he spent his childhood. His only formal education was received at the school of his Aunt Lina, where he developed a lifelong love of books. In his uncle's pharmacy, he became a licensed pharmacist and was also known for his sketches and cartoons of the townspeople of Greensboro. At the age of twenty, Porter came to Texas primarily for health reasons, and worked on a sheep ranch and lived with the family of Richard M. Hall, whose family had close ties with the Porter family back in North Carolina. It was here that Porter gained a knowledge for ranch life that he later described in many of his short stories. In 1884, Porter moved to Austin. For the next three years, where he roomed in the home of the Joseph Harrell family and held several jobs. It was during this time that Porter first used his pen name, O. Henry, said to be derived from his frequent calling of "Oh, 'Henry'" the family cat. By 1887, Porter began working as a draftsman in the General Land Office, then headed by his old family friend, Richard Hall. In 1891 at the end of Hall's term at the Land Office, Porter resigned and became a teller with the First National Bank in Austin. After a few years, however, he left the bank and founded the

    Henry Harland
The centre of a coterie of , Harland projected a quarterly for them, the black and white work being done by Aubrey Beardsley . Appearing in Jan., 1894, "The Yellow Book" made Harland and Beardsley the lions of the hour, and the vogue continued till Harland's failing health stopped the publication in 1897. In this year Harland and his wife were received into the Church. In 1898 appeared "The Cardinal's Snuff Box", a delightfully buoyant novel of Italian life. It is so pervaded with the beauty of the Catholic Faith (as are all of Harland's writings from this on) that it has made converts. In 1902 was published his masterpiece, "The Lady Paramount", likened by John Oliver Hobbes to a Shakesperian comedy. In 1904 came "My Friend Prospero", in the same charming vein. "The Royal End" (1909) was incomplete when Harland died. His wife finished it according to his notes. Despite ill health, Harland, always whimsically joyous, was, still more than Beardsley, a "boy who never grew up". At thirty his physician gave him two years to live, but he prolonged them to fourteen most fruitful ones. In sight of the home built by the family at Norwich, Conn., before 1776, Henry Harland lies buried near his people, but in consecrated ground, with a Roman cross at his head. GLASTONBURY (MRS. HENRY HARLAND), The Life and Works of Henry Harland in Irish Monthly (Dublin, April, 1911), this, the only accurate account of Harland, is reprinted from The Redwood (Santa Clara, California); BURKE, Novels of Mr. Henry Harland in Cath. World (New York, April, 1903); JAMES, The Story Teller at Large in The Fortnightly Rev., LXIX (London); Athenaeum (London, 30 Dec., 1905); The Times (London, 22 Dec., 1905); The Bookman, XXII (New York, 1905-6), XXIX (1909); The Lamp, XXVI (New York); Current Literature, XL.
