Patrick Henry, March 23, 1775 Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it. It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

Dedication: This World Wide Web page is devoted to Patrick Henry (1736-1799). The greatest orator of the American Revolutionary period, Patrick Henry spoke for freedom and against tyranny at all possible occasions. After failing as a farmer and a storekeeper, read for the law and succeeded before frontier juries. His first famous case and oration was the known as the Parson's Cause in 1763. A Preacher, one of a dozen who refused to take out a license to preach from the Anglican church, was flogged for his resistance. During the trial, he declared, that a king, by vetoing acts of the colonial legislature, "degenerates into a tyrant and forfeits all right to his subjects' obedience." In gratitude, the Virginia colonists elected Henry to a seat in the House of Burgesses in 1765. During his first term, Henry introduced resolutions declaring that the British Parliament could not tax the American Colonies. During one of the debates Patrick Henry declared, ""Caesar had his Brutus; Charles the First, his Cromwell; and George the Third . . .," when he was interrupted by cries of "Treason! Treason!" by the Tory members of the house. Patrick Henry continued, "and George the Third may profit by their example. If this be treason, make the most of it!" Henry's resolutions passed. In 1774 Henry was sent by Virginia as a delegate to the first Continental Congress. At the second revolutionary "convention" called in Virginia the next year, he urged the colony to arm its militia. It was in this speech that he uttered the famous words:

Joe Henry: "Scar" Joe Henry has been writing, singing, and playing guitar for 15 years now, but he's hardly a household name. The singer-songwriter has put out a myriad of albums in his fairly unheralded career, the most recent addition being Scar Henry's songs are long, and played out, but they hold the listener rapt for every second they are wafting through the air. Every note and lyric on Scar seems planned, as his ballads invoke powerful and vivid images. When listening to one of Joe's slower paced efforts, the mood can't help but fill the listener's mind with the image of him wearing a fedora, lurching downtrodden under flickering streetlights. To liken Henry to Billie Holiday, despite the gender difference, is hardly blasphemy to the late great jazz crooner. But Henry can easily turn it around, and he shows his diversity of talent. Henry can seamlessly make the switch

Joe Don Weaver liked the pre-dawn hours more than any other. He hated the day shift in the Montague County lockup because it usually meant dealing with the constant noise and chatter of unruly inmates as they carried out their daily routine. The nights weren’t much better. It wasn’t until the early hours of the morning that the place really settled down and became almost peaceful, a peace only occasionally punctuated by louder than usual snoring or inmates crying out in their sleep. On this particular morning, 15 th June 1983, his peaceful reverie was shattered by shouting coming from a cell at the far end of a hallway. Angry at the intrusion, Weaver strode down the hallway to investigate. Locating the source, he stopped before a cell door and shouted, " What do ya’ want?" A feeble voice answered through the heavy steel door. "There’s a light in here." Weaver didn’t have to look into the cell to know that it was pitch black. "No there’s not."

I began to wonder if this could possibly be what he was refering to when he uttered the immortal words, " Give me Liberty or give me death !

WHO WE ARE:
Our chapter was chartered in 1938 and we presently have 156 members with new members joining every month. Ages range from 20-39+ with lots of energy, enthusiasm, and good humor. Although the chapter counts current President of the United States George Bush and five former Texas Governors as past members, we come from all walks of life - - but we all have a common interest in keeping the USA the greatest nation in the world for our children and our children's children.
WHO WE ARE NOT:
We are not an elitist group in any sense (most of our ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War were hard-working farmers...good with both a plow and a rifle). We are not a meet-eat-tell war stories organization either. In accordance with our charter, we are solely involved with activities that foster patriotism, love for and correctness in American history, beliefs in liberty, our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, an independent Supreme Court, and one unified nation under God.
MEETINGS: Meetings are held the third Saturday each month at 12:00 p.m. at Luby's Cafeteria, 2233 North Loop, Austin, Texas (except February and September when we have joint meetings with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) at Austin Women's Club, 708 San Antonio, starting at 10:45 a.m.). You will hear an outstanding speaker at every meeting! Many members get to Luby's at about 11:00 a.m. for lunch and to become better acquainted. Wives, families, and other guests are always welcome!
