Wells's best known works are THE TIME MACHINE (1895), one of the first modern science fiction stories, THE INVISIBLE MAN (1897), and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1898). Wells wrote over a hundred of books, about fifty of them novels. "No one would have believed, in the last years of the nineteenth century, that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their affairs they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water." (from War of the Worlds Along with George Orwell 's Nineteen-Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World , which was a pessimistic answer to scientific optimism, Wells's novels are among the classics of science-fiction. Later Wells's romantic and enthusiastic conception of technology turned more doubtful. His bitter side is seen early in the novel BOON (1915), which was a parody of

Herbert George Wells , the son of an unsuccessful tradesman, was born in Bromley on 21st September, 1866. After a basic education at a local school, Wells was apprenticed as a draper. Wells disliked the work and in 1883 became a pupil-teacher at Midhurst Grammar School. While at Midhurst Wells won a scholarship to the School of Science where he was taught biology by T. H. Huxley. Wells found Huxley an inspiring teacher and as a result developed a strong interest in evolution. Wells founded and edited the Science Schools Journal while at university. Wells was disappointing with the teaching he received in the second year and so in 1887 he left without obtaining a degree.

Abstract
Herbert George Andrewartha On completing his secondary schooling in 1924, Andrewartha was awarded a cadetship with the Western Australian Department of Agriculture and enrolled at the University of Western Australia, where in due course he took his Bachelor's degree in Agriculture. During his secondary schooling, and at University, he took little part in the social or sporting life because of the long journeys each day, but he played cricket and football for the local Gosnells teams, and tennis on a court made of clay from termite mounds - perhaps this led to his interest in insects. In any event, he continued to play tennis on his own grass court until he was laid low by a stroke a few years after his retirement in 1972. After graduation, Andrewartha began work as Assistant Entomologist in the Department of Agriculture under the supervision of

Wells, Herbert George Wells, Herbert George (H. G. Wells), , English author. Although he is probably best remembered for his works of science fiction, he was also an imaginative social thinker, working assiduously to remove all vestiges of Victorian social, moral, and religious attitudes from 20th-century life. He was apprenticed to a draper at 14 and was later able through grants and scholarships to attend the Univ. of London (grad. 1888). Inspired by the teaching of T. H. Huxley, Wells taught biology until 1893, when he began his career as a novelist. His early books, full of fantasy and fascinating pseudoscientific speculations, exemplify the political and social beliefs of his time. They include The Time Machine The Wonderful Visit The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). In the novels of his middle period he turned from the fantastic to the realistic, delineating with great energy and color the world he lived in. These books, considered his finest achievement, include Kipps Tono-Bungay (1909), and

If you are a student, be sure to checkout our links page for each author, especially if you are doing research. We typically add new novels as the mood hits us. If you have a book or author you particularly want to see, drop us an e-mail: the address is webmastr@underthesun.cc. Here's what has been happening: Friday, Jan 10, 2003 : I`ve done a lot of changes. Now, this entire site is powered by RapidSite[ http://rapidstability.com ], a content management system I wrote. It is easy to use, and allows books to go up online in seconds once they are in electronic format. Additionally, mostweb.cc, underthesun.cc, and classicauthors.net, once three seperate sites, are now combined into one single meta site. I added your ability to change the font size and color of the site using the options link, and a citation link that correctly cites each page. Have fun, I look forward to your feedback.
