Psalm 139

O Lord, in me there lieth nought
But to thy search revealed lies;
For when I sit
Thou markest it;
No less thou notest when I rise;
Yea, closest closet of my thought Hath open windows to thine eyes. Thou walkest with me when I walk; When to my bed for rest I go, I find thee there And everywhere; Not youngest thought in me doth grow, No, not one word I cast to talk, But, yet unuttered, thou dost know. If forth I march, thou goest before; If back I turn, thou comest behind; So forth nor back Thy guard I lack; Nay, on me, too, thy hand I find. Well I thy wisdom may adore, But never reach with earthy mind. To shun thy notice, leave thine eye, O! whither might I take my way? To starry sphere? Thy throne is there. To dead man's undelightsome stay? There is thy walk, and there to lie Unknown in vain I should assay. Psalm 74 O God, why hast thou thus

ary Herbert (1817 - 1893) was the second daughter born to James Balfour and Lady Eleanor Maitland, daughter of the 8th Earl of Lauderdale. She enjoyed a happy childhood at home in Whittinghame, East Lothian, Scotland but also travelled extensively. As two of Mary's siblings were delicate children, the family were frequent visitors to various continental health resorts and spas.
Mary was a typical young 19th century lady and was educated by a permanent staff that travelled with the family. She did receive drawing lessons but little other formal artistic training. Mary married Henry Arthur Herbert in September 1837 bringing a large dowry to the union. Following their marriage, the couple returned to Muckross, which reminded Mary of the Highlands of her native Scotland. While the present Muckross House was under construction (1839 - 1843), Mary travelled extensively overseas. Her four children were all born abroad between 1839 and 1846. During the years of the Great Famine (1845 - 1850) Mary helped raise money for famine relief. Returning to England following a visit to Muckross in 1848, she succumbed to typhus and was unable to return to Ireland with her children until late 1849.

30. Mary Herbert
Characters mary herbert as her brother's collaborator on the psalmtranslations, and Sidney's soul as her nowlost Muse (ll. 3-4
http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng211/mary_herbert.htm
Mary (Sidney) Herbert, countess of Pembroke, dedicatory poem Genre: literary epitaph and religious lyrics. Form: the poem to her brother, Sir Philip SIdney, is in thirteen seven-line stanzas of iambic pentameter rhyming abbababba, a seriously difficult rhyme scheme to sustain for so long. The psalms are in four-line stanzas alternating trimeter and dimeter lines (various meters) rhyming abab (#52) and seven-line stanzas (two iambic tetrameter, two iambic dimeter, and three iambic tetrameter) rhyming abccbab. You'll find the psalm stanzas interesting to compare with Donne's and Herbert's lyrics for their use of varying line lengths and rhyme schemes for religious and quasi-religious topics. Characters: Mary Herbert as her brother's collaborator on the psalm translations, and Sidney's soul as her now-lost Muse (ll. 3-4). The psalmist, David, soothing the tormented King Saul and then fleeing his wrath, and also Mary Herbert, addressing her God and (perhaps) her "Tyrant" (the queen?). Summary: Mary Herbert addresses her brother's soul and her manuscript's readers, asking the latter to witness her attempt to praise him despite the mangled condition of the poems, to her mind incompletely revised in the state they were left when her brother died. We may doubt this as a literal truth because of the tradition of the "modesty trope" in which authors apologize profusely for the hasty and incomplete state of the most thoroughly and meticulously revised works of literature. The psalms address God in a prayer mocking a "Tyrant" (52) and praise God and divine knowledge of our beginnings, existences, and ends (139).

http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng211/mary_herbert_6th_edition.htm
Mary (Sidney) Herbert, countess of Pembroke,"A Dialogue between two shepherds, Thenot and Piers" Genre: pastoral entertainment for the Queen's progress to Wilton (1599). Form: six-line stanzas, lines 1, 2, 4, and 5 of which are iambic tetrameter, and lines 3 and 6 are iambic trimeter (with "feminine" rhyme adding an extra unstressed syllable to each trimeter line's last word). Characters: Thenot , a neoplatonist, Piers , a Protestant with some Puritan tendencies (suspicion of poetic uses of language), and Astrea , one of Elizabeth's poetic personas, a goddess of justice. Summary: Thenot makes the traditional poet's claim to be able to summon up the absent beloved's virtues in metaphor, hyperbole, and other tropes (linguistic "turnings" of words to meanings other than their literal ones) . Piers (possibly a reference to Piers Plowman, a medieval spokesman for earnest but unadorned piety) denies that anything but plain speaking and "the truth but plainly [told]" will succeed in capturing Astrea's virtues. They agree that she is praiseworthy, but disagree about the poetics of her praise in a fashion that poets (and queens) might find comic. Issues and Research Sources:
  • This is one of the most refined and rarified works in the Norton, being intended for a very tiny audience of poets and courtiers, and even more so for the smallest Audience in all England, Elizabeth Tudor. The game the "shepherds" play has a serious consequence, however, since at the root of Piers' objections are a fear of flattery and other forms of deceptive language (see Mosca in

    Biographical
    Philip's Phoenix : Mary Sidney, Countess of Pembroke

    by Margaret P. Hannay
    Hardcover - 344 pages
    Oxford Univ Pr on Demand; January 1990
    "In contrast to previous studies that have portrayed Mary Sidney as a
    demure, retiring woman, this biography shows that she was actually
    an outspoken and dynamic figure. Basing her work on primary sources
    including account books, legal documents, diaries, and family letters, Hannay shows that Sidney was a vibrant, eloquent, self-assertive woman who was deeply involved in Protestant politics. Although she did confine her writings to appropriately feminine genres, she called herself "Sister of Philip Sidney" to establish a literary and political identity. As a Phoenix rising from her brother's ashes, she transcended gender restrictions by publishing her brother's writings, by writing and translating works which he would have approved, by assuming his role
