Please note:
Mary Kennan Herbert: Three Poems Train Ride to Springfield Leave things behind.
Watch the present slide by into somebody's past.
View carcasses of cars and retired tires, graffiti-scarred walls,
quickly gone. The ailanthus tree arrives with splashes of green
seen faster and faster along the edge of a silver river.
Soon you will see scaup skim whitecaps heading to the sea,
and observe exemplars of goosey-loosey housekeeping on the bays:
Canadian geese, a mated pair swim with six goslings
in their family flotilla are part of a brief glimpse of dancing waters
lapping at the trackside marina where clean white bellies of boats
await tender kisses in drydock. Take notes. Write a poem. Wow, there goes Stamford perched on the slope of Western Civilization, a quick familiar glance includes duly noted cormorants sunning on dead limbs protruding from a slough not far from a parking lot where rows of oil stained cars remind me of the duckweed decorated tide hurrying out to touch our cindered shores. Beyond each cove new encounters await.

The Great Hall includes the 15th century tapestry made especially for the visit of King Henry VII in 1500, stained glass from medieval times, the statue of Lady Godiva made in the mid 19th century and portraits of various English monarchs.
The Old Council Chamber is a small room leading off the Great Hall. It was used as the meeting place for the City Council from 1421 to the 1860s. Leading off it is the Treasury with its star vault and fine tiled floor.
The Treasury From the Great Hall the visitor can climb up a 17th century staircase. Midway up the staircase, there is an Ante Room. With its sloping floor and walls and appearance like the lower deck of a galleon it overlooks the entrance courtyard.

The Day After Christmas Day
by Mary Kennan Herbert St. Stephen O soul mate keeper of Christmas you should be here now see all this paper and ribbon and cards that don't match the gifts behold the glittering packaging that now goes into my trash bag of dreams
one ribbon of silver found behind the sofa spiraled like a Slinky loath to give up its signage of merriment its job was joy even when hiding back there amongst shadows and dust bunnies of holidays past
the clean-up committee is light in the head all too eager to follow the King into the midnight snow Martha reeling out faith like ribbons or sparkling twine with no end much like yesterday's champagne flute full of little stars that bubble up like poems
Originally from the Midwest (St. Louis, Missouri), Mary Kennan Herbert now lives in Brooklyn, New York. Following a career as a senior editor in book publishing, she now teaches writing courses at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York City, at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University, and at other colleges in the New York City area. The NAACP offered guidance to the organizers of the Anti-Lynching Crusaders and appeared to give full support to the women involved. Memorandum to Mesdames Mary B. Talbert, Butler Wilson and Helen Curtis. From Herbert J. Seligmann. June 27, 1922.

Patroness of the arts and scholarship and a notable translator. She was the sister of Sir Philip Sidney, who dedicated to her his Arcadia . After his death she published it and completed his verse translation of the Psalms.
In 1575 Queen Elizabeth I invited Mary to court, promising "a speciall care" of her. Two years later Mary wed Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, and lived mainly at Wilton House, near Salisbury, Wiltshire. Their sons, William and Philip, were the "incomparable pair of brethren" to whom William Shakespeare's First Folio (1623) was dedicated.
Among those who praised her for her patronage of poetry was Edmund Spenser, who dedicated his Ruines of Time to her, and Michael Drayton, Samuel Daniel, and John Davies. A lutanist, she inspired Thomas Morley's dedication of Canzonets (1593); and, in his dedication to her of Pilgrimage to Paradise (1592), Nicholas Breton likened her to the Duchess of Urbino, patroness in an earlier time to Baldassare Castiglione. Lady Pembroke ranked after the queen as the most admired of Elizabethan

Two Poems by Mary Kennan Herbert.
    Long Shot
My brother barbecues steaks for our dinner
outside on his apartment's little balcony, overlooking a pristine California alley where
poinsettias are growing wild. Christmas weeds. A one-legged jay perches on our terrace railing,
waiting for handouts. Tame as a parrot. Every Friday evening in Santa Monica,
new Californians make a sacrifice of steaks outdoors, in homage to being here, not where they used to be,
in our own Hollywood backdrop on Pacific time. Here the sun is always warm on my tourista arms.
"Wait till you feel the fearsome Santa Ana winds," my brother smiles. He unveils a new mythology.
The beef sizzles. The sun dazzles. The intense California sun fires up my desires:
a sunset as perfect as a painted sky in a movie gives us a backdrop for the grill, gulls overhead, leering Royal Palms, and the hungry jay. My brother points west: "Twelve blocks straight ahead, the Pacific Ocean. It's right over there." Later, looking for the sacred sea, I crossed streets in Santa Monica, marveling how traffic comes

2001 The Blacklisted Journalist) An Inventory Of Fragile Knowledge by Mary Kennan Herbert. 44 pages, $10 check made out to Mary K. Herbert, 20 South Portland Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11217. A fine chapbook of mature observations on life and love and nature and childhood reminiscences. Sex is about the pre-Aids 1960's, when Mary meets a cornet player and becomes a groupie: "…He just knocks me out. Image, image. His musical gifts are icing on the cake. One night I go to hear a few sets by myself. If a young woman alone shows up for the last set, that means she is available for the night. Oh, yeah. Mr. Coronet Player comes out and sits by me for a while, in between sets. He asks me if I'd like to go home with him. We walk all the way to Sheridan Square, where my coronet player buys orange juice and eggs ("for a great breakfast, baby"), then we grab a cab up to his loft in Chelsea. The loft, a dark and cluttered aerie, is the kind of place where a lone jazz musician can maintain a semblance of domesticity. In short order we are in bed my heart is pounding in anticipation.
