Graf Brühl Im zeitlosen Raum Zbigniew Herbert ist einer der bekanntesten und am häufigsten übersetzten polnischen Schriftsteller der Gegenwart. Er erhielt mehrere internationale Auszeichnungen für sein literarisches Werk, blieb jedoch immer eng mit seinem Heimatland Polen verbunden. In dem Gedichtband Herrn Cogitos Vermächtnis erscheinen einige seiner Gedichte neu überarbeitet, andere zum ersten Mal in der deutschen Übersetzung. Herbert schreibt über den Krieg und gegen den Krieg, über den Menschen und das Menschsein, über Werte und Verluste, über die Liebe und über den Sinn für die Schönheit des Lebens. Er vereint Realität und Phantasie, Gefühl und Verstand, Ideal und Konfrontation, ohne jedoch den unmittelbaren Bezug zur Wirklichkeit zu verlieren. Von Gedicht zu Gedicht schwingt die Frage nach dem Sinn der Dinge mit. Alles hat eine Bedeutung. Das zeitgeschichtliche Ereignis hinterläßt seine Spur in den alltäglichen Begebenheiten, und beide sind vielleicht mehr als nur Anfang oder Ende oder das Glied einer Kette. Der Gegenstand wird lebendig. Herbert läßt in den Gesichtern der Natur den menschlichen Charakter entstehen und scheint dabei aus den tiefen Urgründen der Welt nach Inspiration zu schöpfen. Er schreibt in einer wunderbar bildhaften Sprache; die Tiefe seiner Gedanken findet Bestätigung im Schauspiel seiner Kompositionen. Trotzdem bleibt das Ziel fast immer in weiter Ferne.
