A Life in Writing:
John Hersey,
October 1993 When John Hersey '36 died on March 24, the nation lost one of its most admired writers. The author of 25 books, including A Bell for Adano Hiroshima , and The Wall , and numerous articles for the New Yorker and other magazines, Hersey won the Pulitzer Prize and set a daunting standard for moral concern delivered with high literary grace. But if Hersey was unique as a writer, he was also distinctly a product of Yale. Born the son of missionaries in Tientsin, China, he came to Yale in 1932. While at the College, he played on the varsity football team, wrote music criticism for the Yale Daily News , and served as class secretary. During the years following graduation, he maintained close links with the University, and from 1965 to 1970 was master of Pierson College, the first nonacademic to hold such a post. Hersey's mastership coincided with some of Yale's most turbulent years, and in 1970 he summed up his feelings about them in a brief but powerful book, Letter to the Alumni , which did much to explain what lay beneath the turmoil spawned by the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War and their impact on the Yale campus.

John Hersey
Using the phrase “physical lyricism” to describe his earlier work, John Hersey is best known for his larger scale abstract paintings. Although his recent cast bronze and welded steel sculpture carries much of the feeling of that period, his more recent paintings have been primarily figurative. Throughout, John Hersey has continued his drawings, paintings, and etchings.
John Hersey was born in New York City in 1943, son of journalist and author John Hersey and Frances Ann Cannon. He attended the Pomfret School in Connecticut where he began painting under the tutelage of Charles Cole. He studied under Victor De Pau before entering Yale University as an Art and Architecture major. During his university years, John also worked for the architect John M. Johansen, A.I.A., studied Drawing at Stanford University, and Philosophy of Art and Painting at the University of California at Berkeley.
John Hersey received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale in 1965 and entered the Yale School of Architecture. He studied photography with Walker Evans. Following graduate school, he worked as draftsman for various architectural firms in New York City, most notably with John M. Johansen again.

Hiroshima
Journalism : NYU Top 100 of the 20th Century (1)
Author Info: John Hersey
Originally published in the New Yorker, this brief but powerful book recounts the story of six survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Through the steady accumulation of horrific details and the avoidance of polemic, Hersey confronts the reader with a matter of fact account of the devastation that followed in the wake of the bomb. In the final pages, when he raises the question of whether the bombing was moral, he allows the reader to decide. By providing this absorbing portrait of the consequences, he has enabled readers to, at least, make a better informed decision.

john hersey. Neither the eloquence can guarantee anything. Only men canguarantee, only the behavior of men under pressure. — john hersey.
http://www.jou.ufl.edu/uf441/low_graphics/journalists/john_hersey.htm
John Hersey "Neither the eloquence of Churchill nor the humaneness of Roosevelt, no Charter, no plan, no hope, no treaty none of these can guarantee anything. Only men can guarantee, only the behavior of men under pressure."
John Hersey Born: June 17, 1914 Died: March 24, 1993
Birthplace: Tientsin, China John Hersey was born on June 17, 1914 in Tientsin, China to missionaries Roscoe and Grace Baird Hersey. He lived in Tientsin until he was ten years old and then returned to the U. S. with his parents. Hersey attended Yale and then went on to graduate study at Cambridge. He obtained a summer job as a secretary for Sinclair Lewis in the summer of 1937, and, that fall, started work at Time magazine. Two years later he was transferred to Time's Chungking bureau. During World War II he covered the fighting in both Europe (Sicily) and Asia (Guadalcanal), writing articles for Time, Life, and The New Yorker. Hersey's first article for The New Yorker was a piece about John F. Kennedy and the PT-109 rescue, which was later reprinted in Reader's Digest.
Hersey's first book, Men on Bataan (1942) was a patriotic look at General Douglas MacArthur and his troops in the Pacific at the beginning of the second World War. His second book, Into the Valley (1943), described the fighting at Guadalcanal from the perspective of the soldiers. At Guadalcanal, Hersey had become a participant rather than just a reporter. The unit he was accompanying came under heavy fire and suffered many casualties; Hersey was pressed into service as a stretcher bearer and was later commended by the Navy for his assistance in aiding the wounded.
