Bush. Hightower is a radio commentator, columnist and legendary champion of the working class heroes and farmers of America. "Reading Jim Hightower is like scratching where it itches. Fella goes right through all the twaddle and the bull that passes for political debate in Washington like a dose of salts. Hightower is pure populist, all wool and a yard wide. He slams corporate corruption of Congress, corporate polluters, corporate media, corporate welfare and the gooberheads that get along with them. Boy, it didn't take the members of congress long to get down to business, did it?
Not the people's business – their own. On the very day that congress opened, the Republican leadership in the House rammed through a proposal to loosen the ethics rules that ban lobbyists from buying meals or giving gifts to members of congress. Dubbed the "pizza rule" by some critics, the "Col. Sanders rule" by others, the change allows lobbyists to – get this – buy pizza, buckets of fried chicken, and other food for members and their staffs when they're working on bills at night.
es, the very lobbyists who have a direct interest in the bills will be allowed to send in a free pepperoni-with-mushrooms to our lawmakers as they write legislation! Can't you imagine the lobbyists scrawling amendments on the paper napkins, plus a little note saying, "Remember, we deliver!" Of course, the Republican leaders say: Tut-tut, you can't possibly think that we'd sell out for a chicken wing and a slice of pizza. One would hope not, but then why change the rule? Come on – congress critters are paid $150,000 a year, and top staff make nearly as much, so here's a thought: BUY YOUR OWN DAMNED PIZZA! STOP BEING A CHEAP MOOCHER!

You've got to admit that George W is smarter than he was given credit for at first. But that's not saying a heck of a lot, since he was basically credited with having the IQ of sushi.
Still, next to his successor as Texas Governor, Bush is practically in the Mensa class. Rick Perry is the new governor's name, and he couldn't spell IQ if you spotted him the I. For proof, check out an astonishing statement he made just before taking office. While most incoming governors are brimming with optimism and talking about "getting things done," our Texas leader said that the people shouldn't expect him to deal with the state's big problems!
Yes, said the sitting Guv, our state is saddled with an inadequate regressive tax system that can't even meet the minimal public needs, and yes, funding for our educational system is in crisis. But, he asserted, with a deer-in-the-headlights look in his eyes, he was new on the job, as was the new Republican lieutenant governor and speaker of the house, so they should get a pass on coping with these big ones. Here's what he said verbatim: "To put these newly-elected individuals in and say, 'We are going to fix something that has been broken or substantially bent for some period of time' is a bit unreasonable." Gee, I wish he'd mentioned that when he was running for governor last year. Maybe, instead of him, we could have found someone who actually felt up to doing the job.

http://www.efn.org/~chrp/hightower.htm
JIM HIGHTOWER Populist Political Sparkplug J im Hightower has been described as that rarest of species: "a visionary with horse sense and a leader with a sense of humor." Today Hightower is one of the most respected "outside Washington" leaders in the United States. Author, radio commentator and host, public speaker and political sparkplug, this Texan has spent more than two decades battling Washington and Wall Street on behalf of consumers, children, working families, environmentalists, small business and just-plain-folks. Hightower has just finished working on a new book, IF THE GODS HAD MEANT US TO VOTE THEY WOULD HAVE GIVEN US CANDIDATES, due in bookstores in January 2000. His previous book about America's class war, THERE'S NOTHING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD BUT YELLOW STRIPES AND DEAD ARMADILLOS received rave reviews. It's also the title of one of his speeches on campuses which brings home a hard-hitting message while keeping his audience doubled up with laughter. Jim Hightower's wildly entertaining and informative talks invite his audiences to address the "outsider viewpoint" that the "insider media" usually ignores or trivializes. He highlights "crime in the suites" as well as "crime in the streets" and greedhead failures as well as grassroots successes.

Interview Believing in the common good David Barsamian interviews Jim Hightower Jim Hightower is host of the nationally syndicated "Chat & Chew" radio show. His new book is BARSAMIAN: In , you quote Mary Ellen Lease at the founding of the People’s Party in Topeka, Kansas in 1890: "Wall Street owns the country. It is no longer a government of the people, by the people and for the people, but a government of Wall Street, by Wall Street and for Wall Street." Are we looking here, then, at an El Niño kind of climate change? The Big One, Something that was very striking in your biography was that you were the starting linebacker on your high school football team. What was your family background? The last section of my book is called "Daddy’s philosophy." It talks about the departure from the strong American value of the common good that is ingrained in every American just as surely as we also have ingrained in us the belief in rugged individualism. We still believe in the common good and community responsibility. My father was a great believer in that. He didn’t preach about it. He just practiced it without even realizing what it was. What kind of change have you seen in the Democratic Party in the last few decades?

With the election two weeks away and polls deadlocked, is Green Party candidate Ralph Nader a spoiler for Al Gore? Following a background report, Gwen Ifill talks with Jim Hightower and Paul Wellstone. GWEN IFILL: So is Ralph Nader a spoiler? Pitting liberals against liberals, populists against progressives? We pick up the debate with Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota; the two-term Senator has one of the most liberal voting records in Congress. He supports Al Gore. And Nader supporter Jim Hightower, a populist radio commentator and publisher of a monthly political newsletter, he's the author of "If the Gods had Meant us to Vote, They Would have Given us Candidates." Welcome both gentlemen. Mr. Hightower, why should progressives vote for Ralph Nader?
Jim Hightower JIM HIGHTOWER: Because it's a vote for the future. It's a vote against being taken for granted by a two-party, money-soaked duopoly that is not meeting the needs of the majority of the people. They're stiffing the family farmers who are going bankrupt at about 1,000 a week now, that are stiffing the working folks who are being downsized at a steady pace, they're stiffing consumers with genetic manipulation of the food supply. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are willing to stand up on these issues, for example, the globaloney of corporate-managed trade that's being shoved down our throats through NAFTA and the WTO. There's a rebellion against this. This isn't about Ralph Nader. It's about ordinary people looking far real political channel that works for them for a change.

Dirty Tricks On Jim Hightower by John Nichols
Texas populist Jim Hightower shouldn't be giving speeches, joining demonstrations and raising money for good causes in Madison this week. He should be down in Texas running things. Or maybe in the U.S. Senate. Or maybe even campaigning for president. But politics is a nasty business. And Hightower, who will be in Madison tonight and Friday for a busy schedule of rallies, book signings and radio shows, has seen politics at its nastiest. And the nastiness cost America one of its most promising contenders. Back in 1982, Hightower was a crusading editor and all-around rabble-rouser in Austin, the Madison of Texas. Like his friends Jesse Jackson and Ed Garvey, Hightower was inspired in those dark days of Reaganism to try his hand at politics. Jackson, Garvey and Hightower recognized that the limp Democratic challenge to Reagan's right-wing policies needed to be replaced with a left-wing populist appeal. Hightower ran for the obscure job of Texas commissioner of agriculture on a visionary platform that promised to side with small farmers against corporate agribusiness, defend farm workers and protect consumers. To just about everyone's surprise, he won and, even more surprisingly, he kept his promises.

Jim Hightower dismounted from his maroon, made-in-America Ford Escort, looking almost every inch a Texan in his cowboy hat, pressed jeans and loafers. Swinging a misshapen, green canvas briefcase, he strode across the restaurant’s parking lot, already baking under the late-morning Austin sun. As he neared the entrance, a red neon pig’s rump blinked from above, beckoning, "Food to take home." is where he hosts The Jim Hightower Chat and Chew Show , the nationally aired AM vehicle for his populist crusade on behalf of the working poor and middle class. It’s not a calling that’s likely to win friends in high places – unless that circle includes such like-minded rabble-rousers as filmmaker Michael Moore, who demands: " When do we get to vote for Jim Hightower for president? Will somebody please tell me?" "Being able to use my voice as a connector to political action right now is the most useful thing I can be doing," says Hightower, 56. "Linking people up to each other, linking them to information, linking them up to a bigger concept than whatever they’re personally involved in at the moment, is a big part of movement building."

On Leadership Day (the first day of the conference with visits to lawmakers

our table. Plus the 4 pages of contacts that signed in at our table. I printed up 1000 copies of our faux business card with instructions on how to access NAECY Men list, and passed those out all over the conference grounds. Came home with fewer than half. I also had a chance to speak with Mark Ginsberg about the NAEYC Men in ECE Resolution, and he shared with me that it is on the plate, but that with
