JOHN GOLDEN AND THE LAWRENCE STRIKE
(JOE HILL) (1912)
Tune: "A Little Talk With Jesus"
Another Joe Hill song, which evolved around the I.W.W.-led strike against the Lawrence, Massachusetts, textile mills in 1912, was "John Golden and the Lawrence Strike." This song... satirized the activities of John Golden, an American Federation of Labor official who attempted to gain control of the strike. A majority of the unskilled laborers in the textile mills of Lawrence were recently arrived immigrants who received wages barely sufficient to sustain life. Abot half of Lawrence's 85,000 population over the age of fourteen had jobs in the mills, and health and living conditions were so deplorable that a local physician maintained that thirty-six out of every one hundred men and women working in the mills died before the age of twenty-five. The strike was precipitated by a law passed by the Massachusetts legislature reducing the work-week from fifty-six to fifty-four hours for women and children, beginning January 1, 1912. Workers struck spontaneously when the mill owners reduced wages to coincide with the reduced work-week. The I.W.W., which had been increasing its strength among the mill workers since 1907, sent Joseph Ettor to lead the strikers. Arturo Giovannitti, representing the Italian socialist newspaper

Lawrence Walsh: Spring Hill residents have lots of trouble Friday, June 01, 2001 It was an offer the city couldn't refuse. So it didn't. A group of people who live on the lower section of Spring Hill, just a few blocks up from East Street, have offered to clean up overgrown, trash-strewn, junk-filled city-owned lots the city has neglected for years if the city supplies the trash bins. Residents of Bly and Royal streets look at trash dumped at the intersection of their streets. From left, Joyce and Kevin Morgan, Bill Gross, Terrie Mania and Angelo Badamo. (Steve Mellon, Post-Gazette) There's plenty to put in the bins, including lots of tires, with and without wheels; a tire with an axle attached; old building materials; a disassembled green staircase; construction debris; a refrigerator; broken bottles; crumpled cans; and bags of trash. The group, frustrated at "being ignored" by city officials for more than two years, sent me a letter about the city-owned lots and a lot with abandoned vehicles. They also sent a copy of a petition about speeding traffic on Royal Street that was signed by 37 residents of Royal, Bly, Luella and Nettie streets.

Christopher Lawrence
One of Australia's favourite radio personalities, Christopher Lawrence's career spans more than 25 years of broadcasting on both radio and television. Among his many talents, Christopher has written and produced numerous radio features (ranging from the love life of the 19th century French composer Hector Berlioz to the history of the songs and stories of Australian waterfront workers) and has been a guest conductor for several Australian symphony orchestras. He was the recording producer for Stuart Challender and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra on the Bicentennial Tour of the United States and in 1999 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Communications by the University of Central Queensland.
For two years before joining ABC Classic FM, he presented Radio National's Music Show on Saturday mornings. From 1994 to 1998 he worked as presenter of ABC Classic FM's Breakfast program and most recently has been the network's Drive presenter. Christopher's recording work has so far earned him three ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) Awards and a 1992 Churchill Fellowship. The "Swoon" collection CDs which evolved out of his Breakfast program on ABC Classic FM have also broken records in the Australian classical music industry. All three Swoon CDS have now achieved platinum status.
He has also written two best-selling books: "Swooning - a classical music guide to life, love lust and other follies" and "Hymns of the Forefathers", based on his documentary about the history of hymns which aired recently on ABC TV.

Clouds Hill – the woodland retreat of TE Lawrence
A recent visit as a tourist suggested the following: Fantasy Use of the Cottage at Clouds Hill for Pack Drill and Corporal Punishment Scenarios squaddie John: squaddieJH@aol.com Location and History Clouds Hill cottage is situated in a woodland location on a minor road adjacent to Bovington Camp, a tank training ground where TE Lawrence (“Lawrence of Arabia”) was serving in the Tank Cops as “Private Shaw”. The brick cottage was bought by him in 1925 and renovated with the assistance of Pioneer Sergeant Knowles; it has four rooms and a free-standing garage suitable for motorbikes. The entrance door leads directly to a steep flight of stairs at the top of which is The Bunk Room and (right) The Music Room. The Bunk Room There is a single bunk bed made from mahogany with large utility drawers underneath for kit and bedding. The room is decorated with aluminium foil to look like the interior of a metal-hulled ship. Circular window as if a porthole. Hob-nailed ammo (ammunition) boots would make a striking noise in this room without soft furnishings. Absolutely ideal as a fantasy living space for a matelot or squaddie as if on board a ship or submarine, ready for strict bed-space kit inspections and defaulter’s pack drill.
