When attacks against her began in December 1996, cyberstalking was virtually unheard of, and she had a difficult time finding help. "There was basically nothing out there to help me," Hitchcock said. "(The police) had no idea how to handle it." Hitchcock inadvertently sparked a slew of cyber attacks when she blew the whistle on a literary agency that was scamming writers out of their money. Part of a writing newsgroup, she had heard from other writers that they had submitted works for publication, sent money, but had never been published. She posted a message asking if others had this same experience, and the attacks began.

The family thinks he may have got into the house and stood in her room very early one morning - fortunately he did not touch her. The cyberstalker has managed to elude police as his 'cybertrail' is quite complex. The girl has been moved to a secret location on the east side of the country and international police are now involved in the case. Caught in the Net An online posse tracks down an Internet stalker By Jack Mingo Somebody was stalking Jayne Hitchcock on the Internet. Last December, as Jayne and her husband Chris were sitting down to a quiet holiday dinner with friends in their Crofton, Maryland, home, the first in a string of mysterious phone calls jangled the Hitchcocks' nerves. "It was just odd at first," Jayne Hitchcock recalls, "but it became terrifying. We had no idea what was going on." Some calls were hang-ups, but others were far stranger "Loverboy" phoning collect from somewhere unknown, a student calling from Germany and wanting, he said in halting English, to discuss his "sexual fantasies." As December melted into January, the calls built to a crescendo of 25-30 a day. If she had been able to distance herself from this sudden, disturbing attention, Hitchcock might have found these sex-tinged inquiries ironic. She is, after all, a published author of childrens' books, with five non-fiction titles and one fiction work to her credit. Why would anyone want to harass her? It wasn't long before a clue arrived, in the form of another phone call, this one from a helpful stranger. "Do you know your name is being 'spammed' on sex ads all over the Usenet?" he asked.

A useful service was recommended: Edit Ink, which for a fee would polish the ms. to make it more salable. Once the ms. had been edited, the agent would then be interested in reconsidering it. The agent forwarded the writer's name to Edit Ink, which sent off a solicitation letter claiming, among other things, that Edit Ink received referrals for only a "select few" manuscripts, and that most publishing houses insisted on receiving "professionally edited" work (both claims are false). If the writer took the bait, the referring agent received a kickback of 15% of the fees paid to Edit Ink.
