21. The Snowball Earth
by Paul F. hoffman and daniel P. Schrag
http://www-eps.harvard.edu/people/faculty/hoffman/snowball_paper.html
The Snowball Earth Many lines of evidence support a theory that the entire Earth was ice-covered for long periods 600-700 million years ago. Each glacial period lasted for millions of years and ended violently under extreme greenhouse conditions. These climate shocks triggered the evolution of multicellular animal life, and challenge long-held assumptions regarding the limits of global change. by Paul F. Hoffman and Daniel P. Schrag August 8, 1999 CONTENTS Introduction

Illustrations Introduction Frozen and Fried Sea Ice at the Equator ) is quite insoluble. However, in its reduced form (Fe ), iron is relatively soluble. Most BIF occurs in rocks older than 1850 million years and is believed to have formed at a time when the atmosphere had little free oxygen, and seawater in the deep ocean contained abundant iron. This iron precipitated in upwelling zones when it encountered more oxidizing surface waters. The transitory return of BIF, invariably associated with glacial deposits, after a hiatus of over a billion years is remarkable. Kirschvink reasoned that during the millions of years of ice-covered oceans, the amount of gas exchange between the ocean and atmosphere would be reduced, and the deep ocean would quickly become anoxic, allowing reduced iron to build up to high concentrations. Once the glaciation ended, the ocean would quickly become oxidized, and the iron would precipitate out in close association with the deposits of sediment-laden icebergs. The high-obliquity hypothesis provides no explanation for the association of glacial deposits in BIF.

Arriving at last It has stumbled across the harsh
Stones, the black marshes. True to itself, by what craft
And strength it has, it has come
As a sole survivor returns From the steep pass. The legend is nearly decipherable. It has lived up to its vows If it endures The journey through the dark places To bear witness, Casting its message In a sort of singing. Dan ("Daniel") Hoffman Dan's Recent Travel Dan's Spirituality I was born in Denver, Colorado USA in 1943. Much of my life has been centered around international involvements. After graduating from Phillips University in 1966 I served in the Peace Corps in Brazil for two years. From 1970 through mid 2001 I worked in a variety of church-related assignments in Brazil, France, Zambia and other parts of Africa. In 2001 I moved out of full time church/international work in order to pursue other interests, including working with Borders Inc., where I am merchandising supervisor at the beautiful downtown Indianapolis store, and beginning my own small residential cleaning company (Circle Center Cleaning) and joining another church (the Episcopal Church USA).
In addition to my studies at Phillips University, I hold graduate degrees from Christian Theological Seminary, the Iliff School of Theology and Union Theological Seminary (New York). Other non-degree studies were done at the University of Texas and the University of South Africa.

Daniel Hoffman Going Your time has come, the yellowed
light of the weary sun
wavers in the foliage.
So, goodbye, day. See,
the shadows join each other
as the air turns shadow and the light fails. You are gone, gone into the ghostly light of all my days, of all my hungers only partially assauged, of all desires which in the rush of hours I reached and stooped to grasp. like the shadows, receding into subsidence, to come again as the day comes, as the night comes, bringing its own going in its coming again, and again. DANIEL HOFFMAN has published several volumes of literary criticism and, to date, nine volumes of poetry. His collection Brotherly Love, first published in 1981, will be reissued this spring by the University of Pennsylvania Press and has been adapted as the libretto for an oratorio by Ezra Laderman. Daniel Hoffman, Paul Bunyan: Last of the Frontier Demigods (Michigan State University Press, 1952, 1999) Paul Bunyan: Last of the Frontier Demigods is a 50th-anniversary reissue of a book that won the 1949 Chicago Folklore Prize. This book charts the serpentine path of a body of folklore from discourse into mass print media. It tells the story of a folk hero who emerged from the North American logging camps just as mass print media eclipsed the oral transmission of stories. I find it somewhat ironic that the book is being reissued as mass print media are being displaced by electronic communications media. This is a scholarly book, meant for people interested not only in the history of the tales, but the forces that produced them. It also demonstrates the mid-century view of folklore, and would interest readers with a serious interest in the state of folk culture today. Hoffman raises several interesting issues in his study about the symbiotic relationship of advertising to American culture, the tabloid popularization of folk traditions, and the use of folk themes by accomplished artists. Viewed from the vantage point of five decades, the book is also interesting as a glimpse into the assumptions of mid-century academia regarding the relationship of art to popularization, and the status of folk culture in a literate, media- saturated society. I had never tried to imagine the 19th-century lumberjack's world before reading this book. Hoffman describes an isolated male world populated by a hodgepodge of immigrants and languages, yet these are the people that felled almost the entire eastern seaboard, before moving west. He shows how anecdotes about Paul Bunyan express the lumberjacks' reliance on human ingenuity in the face of extreme conditions. One story tells of how Babe, the big blue ox that accompanied the giant Bunyan, was used to break a logjam. After cutting the trees down, they were floated down rivers to mills. Driving the logs downriver meant staying atop rolling logs, and jams often resulted in drowned loggers.
