Out of time - James P. Hogan (19)
I picked this one out from my box of 'recent acquisitions' mainly because of the size. At barely over 100 pages it seemed just like what I was looking for, a quick read. (No pun intended with respect to the title). I soon found out that there was a price to pay.
With the abundance of classic time travel stories dating back to the very earliest of SF writing, it could be stated that 'time' is not only a staple of SF, but a sure bet 'decent story'. In this novel however the reader is in trouble from basically page one. Rather than having any sort of development on the story, we get right into the action. A cop wakes up and begins taking note of all timepieces and we find out that sections of new york have been experiencing time anomaly scenarios in various locations and that specific areas are 'losing' time. More appropriately, areas are experiencing time at slightly differing rates. For instance the airport could be losing 5 minutes a day, the radio station 4, etc. The net effect of all this is that aside from synchronization (eg tv news schedule) communications are being impacted since the transmitter are now broadcasting on slightly altered frequencies.
Our cop and his assistant set out to find out exactly what is going on. The team decides to search using all remotely possible medium, the obvious mathematicians, scientists and psychics and even religious personel. Anyone that can shed light on the situation.

By 1979 he'd written four and decided to quit DEC to write full-time. The Jupiter Novels ... by Charles Sheffield
A review by Rich Horton
Advertisement document.write(''); Outward Bound is the latest in Tor's new Jupiter series of young adult science fiction novels. These are trumpeted as an attempt to recreate some of the spirit of Robert Heinlein's famous "juveniles". In particular, they have been set in the solar system, and have featured fairly realistic space exploration technology, and teenage protagonists. In these ways they resemble much of Heinlein's work. But too close attention to the model can result in a pale imitation instead of something special and new, and I fear that Outward Bound isn't new enough; or different enough.

MARTIAN KNIGHTLIFE by James P. Hogan
Baen, October 2001 Kieran Thane, alias the Knight, is in the business or sorting things out. On Mars, he has plenty of opportunities. A research company has discovered a way of transporting living organismsa method that involves creating an exact duplicate at the receiving end. What happens to the original is somewhat arbitrary. Complications ensuecomplications that only the Knight can deal with. Resolving this problem, however, only leads to escalating issues. The syndicate is anxious to get their money back, and the Knight heads off with a group that is exploring Martian archeologyand discovering ancient structures that could have only been built by the earthly pyramid builders. MARTIAN KNIGHTLIFE combines tongue-in-cheek adventure with mystical mysteries. Veteran science fiction author James P. Hogan keeps up a steady stream of adventure while hinting at a fascinating new society developing in Mars. Kieran Thane is something of a science fiction version of John D. McDonald's Travis McGee, the thinking man's Robin Hood . Although Hogan doesn't dwell on the gritty philosophy of life the way McDonald does, it is certainly there in this novel with its combination of future dystopia and hope.

James P. Hogan: The Immortality Option
A sequel to Code of the Lifemaker. Disappointing, overall. Maybe not so much on its own merits, but because Hogan has done much better in the past. In The Immortality Option , we revisit Titan, home to the machine-beings known as Talosians, and find out their origin. That origin, however, is rather implausible. One can argue, of course, that the appearance of life is a rare event, and of course it's going to involve freak occurrences; but the treatment that Hogan gives it here comes across more like hand-waving. Similarly, a lot of the action revolves around computer networks, simulated people, and AIs. Unfortunately, Hogan doesn't seem quite at home in this realm; the ``software'' characters exhibit too many characteristics of flesh and blood characters (e.g., having to be in one place at a time). At the risk of repeating myself, I'll say that Egan did it better in Permutation City. On the plus side, however, the psychic Karl Zambendorf and his team are back, and just as charming (or annoying, depending on your point of view) as ever. In addition, Hogan spends less time on showing the tricks of the psychic trade, as he did in Code of the Lifemaker, and more on developing Zambendorf as a character. I have mixed feelings about the ending. On one hand, it's the logical and inevitable resolution to the story. On the other hand, it's been done before, and is fairly predictable, or would be if some of the computer stuff had been better developed.

James P. Hogan: Voyage From Yesteryear
How much better to get wisdom than gold,
to choose understanding rather than silver! Proverbs 16:16 You can use karate against a swarm of plankton, but it won't work. Anonymous The premise: Earth sends out a ship to look for colonizable planets in other solar systems. Due to rising tensions and the threat of another world war, it is decided to send colonists along. Unfortunately, the ship is not designed to carry humans. Therefore, instead of colonists, the ship carries DNA patterns and appropriate machinery to turn these patterns back into DNA, and gestate it appropriately. The first generation of colonists will be raised by robots. Fifty years and a nuclear war later, Earth has gotten around to wondering what happened to the colony ship: it has colonized Chiron, a planet around Alpha Centauri. The United States, now more militaristic than ever, in the wake of the war, sends a ship out to Chiron, to annex it before any of the other power blocs can. When their ship arrives, however, they find a planet full of people who have grown up in a technologically advanced society without any of Earth's cultural baggage: a society of individuals, who have not been conditioned from birth to respond to authority, uniforms, threats and so forth.

Voyage from Yesteryear
by James P. Hogan
Review by
Ron Grube Del Rey, New York, 1982 377 pages April 2002
How do you best defeat your political and social enemies? Give them good reasons to join you willingly! It doesn't have to be hit 'em over the head propaganda, sometimes just the example will suffice. James P. Hogan does a masterful job of "convert thy enemy" in Voyage from Yesteryear . This isn't some slam-bang, faster-than-light, wishful-thinking space colony story. It's a carefully thought out and very convincing picture of a future I, personally, wouldn't mind seeing. This is a book I read when I despair of the results of current political trends. Is it ridiculous to read the same story a dozen or so times? Maybe, but if you can call up some hope for the human race, even for a short time, so what if you have memorized some of the dialogue? Voyage from Yesteryear opens with the end of the current space era, the launch of an interstellar probe ship. No magical faster-than-light drives, just pluggin' away with what we know now. Some farsighted people see that while such a slow probe can't carry passengers, it can carry material and information to create colonists if a suitable star system is found, and robot educators to carry the colony through the early times. With freedom and technology, the colony thrives. The only problem is, after a series of wars and decimation of population, the various remaining powers on Earth decide to "rescue" the lost colony. There's a great vision of the kind of "generation" starship that could be workable, even with current technology, and an interesting account of the voyage, with entrenched politics and sociology being challenged by less-conventional thinkers:

Hogan Neil Boortz Reason Online Best of the Web ... Main March 09, 2003 James P Hogan interview I've known the SF writer, James P. Hogan, for over 20 years now, and he's a remarkable fellow. His website is well worth a visit, and I have no problem recommending his books (his book on AI, Mind Matters , is fantastic). He recently was interviewed by the webzine Death Cookie and as usual, lots of meat on the bone: JPH: The institutions that dominate science are very tyrannical. A lot of mainstream scientists that I talk to are obsessed with conformity. They are tyrannized by the peer review process. An in-group controls the peer review process. They control what theories get funded, access to the journals, faculty hiring, and access to the media. Science in the public eye becomes what they say it is. There's a tremendous amount of stuff out there that I think is very persuasive, based on very real evidence, that's just being ignored or suppressed. The public just doesn't get to hear about it. An institution that behaves that way is a church, it's not a scientific establishment.
