History of the Singlehanded TransPacific Yacht Race
by Robby Robinson
Singlehanded Farallones Race The excitement, enthusiasm, and accomplishment of these singlehanded sailors spread to the public and sailors via the local newspapers and marine publications - the "crazy" singlehanders were news on the West Coast in those days. The success of that first Farallones race prompted the formation of the Singlehanded Sailing Society (SSS) and the idea of singlehanding to the next island: Hawaii! The Singlehanded TransPac has become the dream of hundreds of sailors whose first step was often the circumnavigation of SE Farallon Island. George and the SSS began planning a race to be held in June of the following year, 1978. They enlisted the sponsorship of Pacific Skipper Magazine, which produced the program, and Club Mediterranean, Kauai, where the race would end. The entry fee was set at $200 for SSS members and $250 for non-members. Thirty-one singlehanders, who hailed from Seattle to Los Angeles, started that first SSS TransPac. Fourteen smaller boats - 22 to 30 feet - departed with reefed sails at 1300, June 15. Four days later, 19 larger boats hit the line in windy, nasty weather which thankfully improved past Mile Rock. Of the combined fleet of 33 starters, 22 boats made it to the finish line in Hanalei Bay. The records that were set during this windy race, dominated by a strong Pacific High pressure system, were to stand for 10 years. Norton Smith sailed his Santa Cruz 27 Solitaire to a first, both in class and overall in 13 days, 2 hours, and 34 minutes (corrected 9:17:18). Jim Gannon's finish time in his Freya 39

Richard Jones'
Trans-Atlantic Rowing Expedition Two days latter, on June 5, 1996, Peter Hogg of Mill Valley, CA sent this second fax. FROM:
Peter Hogg TO: Friends of Peter Bird DATE: SUBJECT: Peter Bird and the Sector Two This message is to advise you of events subsequent to my last fax of June 3rd.
  • MSA Tokyo advised me that the helicopter from their rescue vessel Zaou recovered Peter's EPRIB from the sea at 0730 GMT on June 4. There was no sign of Peter.
  • The Westwood Halla was released by MSA Tokyo from the search area at 0000 GMT on June 4 and continued her voyage to Seattle.
  • MSA Tokyo terminated the search for Peter at 0834 GMT on June 5. At approximately 0100 GMT on June 6, I spoke by Inmarsat telephone with Captain Mohr of the "Westwood Halla" and learned the following:
  • At the time the "Westwood Halla" was requested to divert to the area of the EPIRB signal, the captain told me that they were experiencing Beaufort Force 9 winds (41-47 knots) and seas up to 10 meters (33 feet).
  • The "Westwood Halla" arrived at the position of the EPIRB signals approximately 4 hours after being requested to divert. This represents a distance of approximately 60 miles. Therefore the weather being experienced by the "Westwood Halla" would have been similar to that experienced by "Sector Two."
  • The captain of the "Westwood Halla" reported that the aft bulkhead of "Sector Two" was stove in and was lying flat inside the boat. This would have compromised the water tight integrity of the aft section, and the ability of the boat to be self righting.

    DATE:
    SUBJECT:
Peter Bird's Trans Pacific Solo Row I am sorry to have to inform you of the following series of events:
  • At 0512 GGMT on June 2, the Tokyo Maritime Safety Agency (MSA Tokyo) received a 121.5 MHz EPIRB (Emergency Position indicating Radio Beacon) signal. This type of EPIRB signal does not identify the source of the transmission but the satellites that respond to the signals are able to identify the latitude and longitude of the source. At 0713 GMT on June 2, MSA Tokyo received a second satellite EPIRB message.
  • At 0713 GMT on June 2, MSA Tokyo received a second satellite EPIRB message.) At 1100 GMT on June 2, the US
  • Coast Guards Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu received a report from a United Airlines passenger aircraft of a 121.5 MHz EPIRB signal in the same area. It is normal procedure for commercial aircraft to monitor this frequency.)
  • At some time on June 2, MSA Tokyo dispatched an aircraft to the reported location.

Dear Dean Hogg: Re: Anti-Islam Article entitled In ALLAH We Trust by Demitry Papasotiriou This letter is to express my outrage and disgust at the most recent instance of continued intolerance at our Osgoode Hall Law School, the anti-Islam article written by Demitry Papasotiriou, who, like myself is a student at this law school. The primary target of the attack is another student, Omar Siddiqui, a South Asian Male, who has written several articles in the Obiter Dicta on subjects such as Shariah Law, the bombing of Iraq, the situation in places such as Chechnia, Afghanistan, and the Israeli occupied Territories. However, on a broader level the attack was against a religion (Islamic Faith) and race (South Asian). Mr. Papasotiriou wrote in reference to Mr. Siddiqui "I have closely observed Mr Siddiqui's insatiable fixation with Islam as clearly demonstrated by his repeated religiously oriented articles in our paper I am convinced, now more than ever, that he must be told that this rubbish must stop!"

Dear Mr. Pieters: Thank your for your letter of March 15, 2001 As soon as the March 12 issue of the Obiter came out, I wrote a letter for publication in the next issue condemning the anti-Islam article and affirming the Law School's committment to equality. I have also spoken toone of the editors of Obiter and to Omar Siddiqui himself. I am also consulting the University Counsel for her advice on the legal situation, and I will speak to Associate Dean Gavigan when she returns to the Law School on Monday. Thank you for your suggestion of a special town hall meeting. Perhaps that would be the best next step. Let me consult withy Associate Dean Gavigan about that idea. With best wishes. Yours sincerely, Peter W. Hogg

I also found a paper stating that Peter and several others went to Florida to get some land they had been promised for service, and there was no land there because the Governor had not had permission to give the land away.
Also Peter, in his will, states there was land given to his servant, who's job was drummer. He was to be given land also for his service. According to the document concerning Florida, he did not receive it. Peter wrote to George Washington and asked him to fix it. Peter was also a friend of George's brother Charles.
    Hope this helps someone. Jully
