However, his life did not begin in this direction. Born in the beautiful seaport of Wellington, New Zealand, Peter never sailed. Instead, he started playing rugby at the age of five and played competitively for thirty seasons. He was soooooo good, he went to graduate school at Stanford and was on the #1 ranked team in the United States. Finally, at the ripe old age of 30, he discovered sailing in the Bay Area. He crewed on a Lapworth 36, owned by CYC member, Don Jacobs, and other boats. After racing for ten years, he helped deliver Freya , a three time Sydney-Hobart winner, to the Caribbean. The crew thought 120 miles a day was good. Peter thought it was really slow. Thus, began his search for a record-breaking boat. Tainui . Peter had mixed results in his first attempts on this boat. But he successfully completed three Singlehanded Transpacs with her. Peter then hooked up with designer, Jim Antrim. This partnership produced

ISBN 1-55221-054-5. A Canadian pundit, Jeffrey Simpson, recently proclaimed Canada had become a "Chartocracy" (Simpson 2002). Simpson's sarcasm reflects the tone of criticism leveled at the Charter of Rights and Freedoms since it became part of Canada's Constitution in 1982. Critics gripe the Charter expanded the powers of the judiciary at the expense of parliamentary sovereignty or "responsible government," the keystone of Canada's system of governance. Moreover, although Charter skeptics from both the political left and right are at odds on most things, they agree that no good is likely to come from the Charter (Sigurdson 1993). Fans of the Charter either have pooh-poohed the seriousness of this concern or defended judicial intrusions into ostensibly parliamentary domains on various grounds. Neither reaction, though, has squarely met the issue of judicial activism head-on. A provocative response from the ranks of Charter supporters emerged in 1997 with the publication of an article coauthored by Peter Hogg, one of Canada's leading constitutional scholars (Hogg and Bushell 1997). The article's empirical data revealed what the authors felt was the inherent dialogic character of Charter litigation. The Supreme Court did not have the last word on the meaning of the Charter after all. Instead there were "legislative sequels" or parliamentary replies to Court rulings that reshaped the law as pronounced by the justices. Nina Vance Niels Peter Esperson IKE Hughes, was another immigrant to Texas shortly after the birth of the oil industry. An oil man and financier, Esperson was born in Ronne, Denmark, on June 3, 1857, to Julia Anne Marie (Funk) and Herman Esperson. Educated in public schools, Esperson graduated from high school at an early age. He arrived in New York City, in 1872, at the age of fifteen and journeyed to San Francisco, reaching that city with only five dollars in his pocket. Esperson worked on a ranch while studying English and geology. In 1889, he moved to El Reno, Oklahoma and opened a real estate office. There he met Mellie Keenan and married her four years later. On hearing news of a gold strike near Cripple Creak, Colorado, in 1895, Esperson joined the scramble for mining rights in the area. Not only did he fail to find gold but he contracted tuberculosis and nearly died. Later the Espersons moved to East Texas. In 1904, Esperson began drilling in the Humble oil field in northern Harris County. After many dry wells, he finally struck oil and found some 200 producing wells in the course of two years. Subsequently he developed other Gulf Coast oil fields and formed a company, which he named " The Invincible Oil Company," a name symbolizing his enduring spirit.
